Zack Snyder Hints At A Larger DC Universe

It has been widely speculated that the upcoming film Man of Steel will be the first step in a larger and connected DC movie Universe. There have been hints and rumors to give the theory some credence, but nothing really concrete. With the plans for a Justice League film coming out in 2015 DC has some groundwork to lay before bringing the massive team-up to the big screen. In a recent interview with the NY Post, director Zack Snyder hinted that there may indeed be a larger universe crafted in the upcoming Superman film.

While there was the usual fluff about feeling the pressure from such an iconic character, how Snyder looked at around 1,500 concept costumes that kept the red undies, and approaching the film as if it were the first ever Superman film, the question was raised what would happen after Superman takes flight next summer. Snyder said you had to take things as they come basically: We approach the film as a single endeavor. There are a lot of gears that have to turn in the world of commerce and the world of the mythology we create to facilitate more adventures for this character. We’ll see what happens. Then things got a little more interesting when the director was asked about how things may be set for the JL movie.

I don’t know how ‘Justice League’ is going to be handled. Honestly, I don’t. But ‘The Man of Steel’ exists, and Superman is in it. I don’t know how you’d move forward without acknowledging that.

Fair enough, that’s a good answer. But then the question was raised if there had been talks with Warner Bros. about integrating the Big Blue Boyscout into a larger universe:

Um, how can I answer that? I can’t really say anything to that, because that’s a big spoiler. I will say, yeah, they trust me to keep them on course.

Keeping things on course certainly sounds like there may be some setup. I’m sure we’ll hear more about this as the movie gets closer, but I find it hard to believe there wouldn’t be some sort of hint at a shared universe before the final credits role on Man of Steel. My money is on a superhero cameo. DC has a lot hinging on Man of Steel, so they’ll have to get a lot accomplished both story and money wise. After the flop that was Green Lantern, we’ll see how things shape up. What do you think? Are you expecting a larger DC Universe with the next outing of Superman?
