Zack Snyder Directing JUSTICE LEAGUE For A Likely 2017 Release; Other DC Movies In Development As Well
Not much news happens on the weekend. Unless there is a convention going on somewhere or something bad has happened, Saturdays and Sundays are usually pretty quiet. DC and Warner Bros. dropped an absolute bombshell tonight as they confirmed that Zack Snyder is directing a Justice League movie. Since the announcement was made, some updates and rumors have started trickling out. We’ve rounded everything up that’s been hitting the web so far, but this is a story that will be developing over the next several days. Read on to see what we know so far.
The Wall Street Journal had the exclusive late night reveal that after the still tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman, Zack Snyder will be directing a full-on Justice League movie. Warner Bros. president of worldwide production, Greg Silverman, said that the team-up movie “will be a further expansion of this universe,” said Mr. Silverman. “’Superman vs Batman’ will lead into ‘Justice League.” Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot are said to be returning. Other than the big three, the team is still being decided upon. With the recent casting announcement of Cyborg, it’s a safe bet he’ll be involved with the team’s creation as well. Aquaman is another heavily rumored character to have at least a small cameo in BvS.
The Justice League script is still in development and no release date has been set. The site also confirmed plans for other DC movies like Shazam and the Metal Men to name just two, and they also confirmed there are currently no plans for a Wonder Woman solo film:
Warner Bros. has several other movies in development unconnected to the Justice League that are based on DC superheroes and fantasy and crime titles from its Vertigo line of genre comics, said Mr. Silverman and Toby Emmerich, president of Warner’s New Line Cinema label. They include “Shazam,” “Metal Men,” “100 Bullets,” and “Fables.”
And while there are no plans yet for a “Justice League” spinoff featuring Ms. Gadot’s “Wonder Woman,” Warner executives said they are warm to the idea. “That is our hope,” said Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing. “With the right script, that could be viable. The world is ready for her.”
While the Journal says no release date has been set, Borys Kit at The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Snyder will direct Batman vs. Superman and Justice League will film back to back with the team-up movie being eyed for a May 2017 release. An announcement is expected at Comic Con. Jeff Sneider at The Wrap adds another interesting tidbit, saying that not only has Jason Mamoa been rumored for the role of Aquaman, but that Matt Damon‘s name has been making the rounds as the guy they want to play the king of the seven seas. While that sounds like a punchline to a joke told when Affleck was announced as Batman, it seems to have some ground in reality if Sneider is passing it along. We’ll just have to wait and see on that one though. What do you think about Justice League being officially announced? Do you hope DC develops Shazam, Metal Men, 100 Bullets, and Fables as planned too?
