X-MEN: APOCALYPSE May See Fan-Favorite Characters Return

by

2003_x_men_2_cyclops-wallpaperNews is trickling in from the first viewing of the latest X-Men movie, and so far, the news is really good. Some are going as far as saying that Days of Future Past is the best X-Men film to date and that the character that had many fans worried the most, Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters, actually steals the show. It’s still quite early, but things are looking up for fans of the mutant universe.

For several months now, we’ve known that Bryan Singer is working on the follow-up to Days of Future Past and that it would focus on the ancient and powerful mutant Apocalypse. The film would likely take place in the 1980′s and once again keep the focus on the First Class group of characters. Currently, that consists of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Lucas Till. After the events of Days of Future Past, that roster may be altered. We’ll have to see on that one. But, once you get into the 80′s, it should be about time to introduce some characters that first made their appearance in Singer’s first X-Men film: Cylops, Jean Grey and Storm. The timing would be just about right to bring them into the fold and according to ScifiNow, that may be happening.

The folks there recently spoke to Bryan Singer about his plans for Apocalypse and what we can expect to see in regards to characters and surprisingly enough, he revealed that the aforementioned trio may be showing up.

“My next goal is how did the X-Men come together? That story hasn’t been told yet, so [Days Of Future Past] is the inbetweequel. It’s in between the birth of that relationship with Charles and Erik and the formation of the X-Men.”

As we know, Cyclops, played by James Marsden and Jean Grey, played by Famke Janssen, were both killed in The Last StandHalle Berry will reprise her role as Storm in the upcoming Days of Future Past. So, if this were to happen, look for some re-casting to happen. But, this quote raises some questions, namely, weren’t the X-Men assembled in Matthew Vaughn’s First Class? In typical Fox fashion, they could just be completely ignoring established story lines. However, if you’ll recall, Professor Xavier and Moira are chatting at the end of First Class and they jokingly call the team his X-Men. Now, does this mean they officially adopted the name going forward? It’s possible, but let’s look at it this way: from what we know, only Havoc and Beast are remaining. Mystique and Angel went to the dark side with MagnetoBanshee was killed, as was Azazel. Emma seems to have either been killed or imprisoned. So the X-Men have some pretty thin ranks heading into Days of Future Past. The events of Apocalypse could possibly see the official gathering of of the team with the addition of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm to the team. Then you have the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it seems most folks, including Fox are moving forward with the thinking that movie never happened.

Is that how it’s going to happen? I have no idea. But looking at the timelines and event so far and from what we know of Days of Future Past, this may be able to work. Now, Singer also mentioned that he’d like to (re)introduce Nightcrawler to the party. As we know, the character already showed up in X2: X-Men United. So how he’s planning on spinning that one is beyond me.

X-Men: Apocalypse is slated for a 2016 release and we know that Singer has been working on some ideas. With his pending legal issues taking priority over things, it will be interesting to see how or if his involvement with the sequel is changed. In the mean time, you can check out Days of Future Past when it hits theaters on the 23rd of this month.
