You Wouldn’t Believe Who Evan Jonigkeit is Playing In DAYS OF FUTURE PAST If I TOAD You
Slowly but surely, we are getting more information on Bryan Singer’s next installment in the X-Men film franchise. We’re getting a better idea of how all the pieces and the two different casts will interact, as well as what unspecified roles some of these actors will be playing. We will be seeing a lot of familiar faces from both Singer’s films as well as Matthew Vaughn’s First Class film, but there are some new faces joining the party. One of the actors that has been listed as playing an “unspecified” role is Evan Jonigkeit. The young actor signed on some time ago, but it has never been revealed whop he will be playing. Until now.
MTV was able to chat with the actor, who was attending the premier of HBO’s Girls, where he revealed that he is playing Toad in the film. As fans will know, Toad was previously played by Ray Park in Singer’s first X-Men film, which leads us to wonder why Park wasn’t asked to return to the role. The answer is simple: Jonigkeit will be playing a younger version of the character.
“I read a lot of the comic books. I found out the storyline of my character, who is Toad,” he said. “X-Men fans will know that Ray Park played him in the first movie, so it’s a generation story of how he came to be. It’s really cool.”
Obviously, he’s stuck with a gag order, so he wouldn’t divulge much more than that. However, it should please fans to know that the story of Days of Future Past will help connect the prequel films to the original films. It’s a small, but very necessary step to help fix the jumbled and convoluted timelines that the X-Men films suffer from. Now, it should be noted that we won’t be seeing the same look carried over. Jonigkeit goes on to say that the look of the character has changed quite a bit and not to expect the same thing we’ve previously seen.
“The aesthetics of the character are much different, and I’m not really allowed to say a whole lot more than that,” he said. “It’s darker. I would say it’s a darker tone.”
Not too much of a shocker there. Is this a lead-in to the formation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants that we first saw in the 2000 X-Men film? It’s quite possible. Mystique, as we know, is already established. We now know that Toad will be showing up; will we be seeing Sabretooth for the third time in the franchise as well? Have to wait and see on that one. One thing I’m hoping we don’t see is another horrible line delivered in Toad’s direction from Halle Berry’s Storm. Be sure to check out the link below for the whole interview.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is slated for a May 23rd opening. The film sees Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Halle Berry, Ellen Page, Daniel Cudmore, Shawn Ashmore, Anna Paquin and Lucas Till all reprise their roles. Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Evan Peters, BingBing Fan, BooBoo Stewart, Aden Canto and Josh Helman have all joined the cast as well.
