William Fichtner’s Latest Comments About Playing Shredder Are Sure To Make TMNT Fans Even Angrier

shredderJudging from message boards and comments on most articles about Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman‘s upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, there aren’t a whole lot of people looking forward to the movie. When the first script leaked last year, fans were stunned to see that the Turtles had been turned into aliens with Shredder being a giant alien with boney protrusions on him which led to the creature getting his name. Bay had to do some damage control and assure fans that things would be rewritten. It was, and a cast was announced not too long afterward. One of those announcements was that David Fichtner would be taking on a big role. Everyone guessed Shredder, and Fichtner confirmed it himself just the other week. Well it turns out the actor is starting to backtrack on that statement. He might have got a slap on the wrist for talking out of turn. If he is indeed playing Shredder, and he probably is, his latest comments about the character will not sit well with most TMNT fans.

Speaking with ScreenRant about his outing in The Lone Ranger, the conversation eventually turned to his role in the Turtles. Fichtner was asked if he was starting to get his look down as The Shredder in the film. That’s when the actor started to backtrack on his previous confirmation of the role:

I actually play a guy named Eric Sachs [Sounds like Sachs? Hard to understand] in the movie. And then he goes through a few stages in his existence. But Turtles is coming together very, very cool. There is a whole interesting dynamic that happens in the world of Turtles and all I can really say about it at this point while working on it is that the Turtle film, it’s not like anything that I remember about the Turtles before. I feel like this Michael Bay-produced movie is just gonna really be something else. I’m pretty excited.

shredderIn every other form of TMNT, Shredder is a Japanese man named Oroku Saki. He’s dons a metal samurai outfit and rules over the Foot Clan. In the leaked script, Shredder  posed as a human named Colonel Schrader and commanded an army group nicknamed The Foot. It sounds like some of the aspects of the original script may have just rolled over into the final product if Eric Sachs turns into Shredder. The set photos we saw of what appeared to be the Foot was a combination of ninjas and military uniforms, so it’s hard to say what is really going on. Fichtner was asked if he would be Japanese like his comic book/Television counterpart. His reply:

You know, uh, you know I think it would be much more exciting to find out these things as it unfolds.

Fichtner is a great actor, so hopefully he’s able to work with what they give him. It seems like the Turtles have an incredible uphill battle before the first second of footage is even shown. Bay and company will have to absolutely astound to turn things around for most fans. What do you think? Have you counted TMNT out already? The film is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and is currently scheduled for a June 2014 release.
