Walking Dead Executive Producer Talks Season 3 And Comic-Con

Season 3 of the hit AMC show The Walking Dead has been shooting for a little while now. We’ve gotten some looks at new characters and even heard a little about how the season’s story arc. Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd spoke with AMC about the new season, the longest one to date, and teases what they will be bringing to Comic-Con.
Season 3 is going to be a massive 16 episode run. With the longest season to date, there comes some challenges:
It’s really a marathon this year. The advantage is we have had some cooler weather in May and we’ll be going into cooler weather again in October. The challenge is maintaining the same intense level of storytelling that our audience expects of us, and we certainly plan to deliver on that.
Some fans got a little bogged down withs season 2 being completely on the farm. That’s going to change with the new season. We know we have the prison and The Governor’s camp coming up this season. Gale Anne Hurd touches on what she’s looking forward to:
I will say that I loved the farm, but it is good to be off the farm. And the contrast between our [two main sets] this season is so great…We’re setting up this first community that is functioning in a post-zombie apocalypse. We get to see not only the
advantages of putting civilization back on its feet again but also the dark forces at work in what may seem like a Utopia.
She also talks about how you have to focus on crafting a rich character-driven story, because you only get scares and jeopardy from situations if you identify with the characters. Besides the human threat, the zombies will “up their game” this season as well. There will also be some animatronics used, a first for the show.
Obviously we have the absolute best makeup effects team on the planet, led by Greg Nicotero… And every year he ups his game. So we’re not just seeing the same old thing. This season, we’re going to have puppeted animatronic zombies and that’s something that we haven’t seen before.
And she really teased what Comic-Con attendees will get to see this time at the panel:
We like to bring a special reel for the fans at Comic-Con so they can see a special sneak peak of Season 3 before everyone else. It’s sort of a reward for waiting in line to getting it into the hall. And we’ll be bringing a larger contingent of our cast and crew than ever this year. And also because we began shooting a lot earlier this year, the reel will contain a lot more footage than it has in the past.
If you’re going to Comic-Con you’re in for a treat. Since they have been filming for a while, the sneak peak will probably have a look at The Governor, Michonne, and all sorts of goodies. The third season starts late this fall. Thanks to Stubbz for the heads up.
