UPDATE: This story seems to be getting more and more interesting. According to HitfixCheadle’s involvement is pretty much guaranteed and that he will have a “key role in the conflict with Ultron that is the main focus of the sequel.” This makes you wonder if they are planning for the future of “iron men” on the Avengers team. With RDJ only signing for a few more Avengers sequels, as I mentioned int he original story below, could War Machine be taking over for Iron Man on the team? Purely speculation on my part, but it does make sense. Keep in mind that none of this is confirmed by Marvel and/or Don Cheadle himself, so take this will a does of salt for the time being. Check out the original story below.

“To say that Iron Man 3 is a polarizing film may just be the biggest understatement of the year. For the most part, critics loved it, touting it as the best in the trilogy. For fans, well most of of them, it’s a different story. That little plot twist really got stuck in the craw for most of us. One of the lesser heard about complaints of the film was the lack of James “Rhodey” Rhodes, played by Don Cheadle, donning the War Machine, ahem…I mean Iron Patriot suit. Sure, he played an integral part in the film, but we really didn’t get to see him take to the skies and do…stuff. So, when will be able to see the character on the big screen again? Well, with Robert Downey Jr not extending his contract to play Iron Man in more solo films- he only signed for two more Avengers sequels- it may be a while. I’m not sure if War Machine is a character that will receive a feature length spin-off, so where does that leave us? How about an Avengers: Age of Ultron appearance?

Last we heard, Cheadle had not spoken to Joss Whedon about having a role in the film, but he did say conversations were happening and he’d be more than willing to step in should the need arise and the story accommodate But, that was way back in April of this year. Today, however, there’s a bit of news coming from USA Today that may hint he is indeed going to reprise his role. Coming of his newly announced Golden Globe Award nomination for his part in House of LiesCheadle spoke with the newspaper, who nonchalantly dropped a little tidbit, saying that he “has a part to film in the next Avengers movie.” Of course, that’s all that was said, so we are left hanging with all sorts of questions and wonderment! We’ll be sure to keep an eye on this one to see if any further information comes up, so keep checking back.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to begin filming next spring, with an expected release date of May 1, 2015. The major players have been set for the film with Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders and Robert Downey Jr. all set to return. Joining them are Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olson, playing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, respectively, and James Spader, who will be filling the villainous role of Ultron.
