UPDATE! Mary Jane Bumped from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Recast Likely

-The-Amazing-Spider-Man-2-On-Location-11-03-13-shailene-woodley-33913502-396-594Production on Marc Webb’s sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man is still going strong in New York City and we’ve seen some pretty spectacular (sorry, I had to) images come off the set, images that have raised a few eyebrows for sure. Some of the very first images that found their way online were of the newly added Mary Jane Watson, played by up-and-comer Shailene Woodley. With Gwen’s fate seemingly sealed in the second film, many were looking to see how MJ would find her way into Peter’s life and it looks as though we’ll have to wait until the third film to see that happen.

According to Entertainment Weekly (via SHH), Mary Janes roles has been completely cut from the anticipated sequel and won’t make her first appearance until the third film, which was recently given a release date in 2016. We’d been told back when Woodley was cast that her part would not be a big one, as they wanted the focus to remain on Gwen for the time being. I guess they wanted all the focus to be on Gwen.

“Of course I’m bummed,” said the actress. “But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film.”

So, it looks as though Woodley agrees. As I just mentioned, the third film in the franchise will hit theaters in 2016, with the fourth film swinging to fans in 2018, keeping with an “every-two-years” type schedule. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 once again follows Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) as he continues to take on the baddies, this time seeing Electro (Jamie Foxx) and the Rhino (Paul Giamatti), come into the picture. All the while Parker must continue on with his personal life and graduate high school, as well as attempt to keep the promise he made to Gwen’s (Emma Stone) father to keep her safe, which may pose to be a much more difficult task.

The film is set for a May 2014 release date and also stars Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn and Sally Field as Aunt May.

UPDATE: We now have more updated information on this story, which is turning out to be bigger than we thought. THR is now reporting that not only was Woodley’s role dropped from the sequel, but that she won’t be returning to the role for the third film and that director Marc Webb will recast the role once work on that installment begins production. Here is what Webb had to say about this breaking news:

“I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”

That is some pretty big news. I assume that Woodley leaving the project is a mutual decision as the young actress is moving up quickly an won’t be hurting for roles in the near future. Now, let the rumors begin as to who will step into the role. What do you think, is this a good move by axing the role and bumping MJ to the third film? Who would you like to see play the role?
