UPDATE John C. Reilly May Actually Be Playing Ronan The Accuser In Guardians Of The Galaxy…But He’s Not
UPDATE: Guess what? Deadline completely rewrote their story. They’re now saying they had it backwards and John C. Reilly WILL be playing Rhomann Dey of the Nova Corps. So they got all the sites worked up and writing about Ronan only to go back, rewrite, and confirm what we pretty much knew to begin with. False alarm everyone! Go back to what you were doing. Reilly will still be the Nova Corps leader who may be the cosmic equivalent of Agent Coulson. Original story follows.
Update #2: The Wrap is reporting that Reilly IS playing Ronan. Who the heck knows any more? The Wrap usually gets in little wars with Deadline over stories and things can get nasty. Who knows if it’s true or both sites are just throwing punches at the other. I don’t know. I just don’t know.
Update #3: As soon as I wrote this The Wrap rewrote their story to say it was Rhomann Dey. I have no idea what is going on and I find the whole thing exhausting. Reilly is in Guardians for sure and he will probably play Rhomann Dey but nobody really knows for sure who the heck he is.
Here’s something that will take the award for most shocking story of the week. John C. Reilly is reportedly playing Ronan the Accuser in James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy. Deadline is saying that can confirm it as a fact.
Deadline says they know that Reilly tested for and will play Ronan in the film…and that’s about all they have to say about that. They have a fairly solid track record, so take this however you want. Reilly was originally reported to play Rhomann Dey, a leader of the Nova Corps. That part was said to be a galactic Agent Phil Coulson type of role and would mean Reilly would pop up in multiple films. If he’s Ronan, he will still probably appear in multiple films. Whether or not this means Rhomann Dey isn’t in the movie or the role was taken by someone else is yet to be seen. As you know from the comics, Ronan the Accuser isn’t exactly a hero. He first appeared in the comics as a Fantastic Four bad guy who wields the Universal Weapon (a pretty nifty giant hammer) for the Kree empire. In some comics, as Deadline points out, Ronan is sometimes the son of Thanos. The Ronan that is the son of Thanos is the Ultimates version, the universe it seems the Marvel movies borrow most from. That would definitely give Guardians another stronger tie to the Marvel Universe heroes on Earth and would help tie things into The Avengers quite nicely.
Now I’m not entirely sold on this one, but I’ve been wrong a few times before. Ronan first appeared in Fantastic Four and is usually a villain associated with them. I’m not sure who holds the rights for Ronan. This may be a character that can be used by both Fox and Marvel Studios, but I’ve never heard anyone talk about him before today. Deadline also calls him “Ronan ‘The Accuser’ Dey” I’m not sure if that was a typo, an attempt at witty wordplay because he was originally said to be Rhomann Dey and that kind of sounds like Ronan, or they just got it wrong. Filming for the film starts next month, so we’ll find out before long. What do you think about John C. Reilly possibly being Ronan the Accuser?
