UPDATE: Benedict Cumberbatch May Reunite With J.J. Abrams For Star Wars VII

cumberbatchEntertainment reporters have been talking about a huge Star Wars VII announcement they’ve all been asked to sit on for the past week. Everyone has held out and kept the secret so far, but what they’ve all been waiting to reveal may have found its way out into to the open today. Film Chronicles are reporting, rather confidently in fact, that Benedict Cumberbatch will team up with J.J. Abrams once again for Star Wars VII.

The site states Cumberbatch will be joining up with the first film in the new Star Wars trilogy, although they haven’t heard anything about what role he could possibly play:

How Cumberbatch fits into the new movie is entirely open to conjecture (seeing as we know zero plot details so far!) Casting calls suggest we may see three or four early twentysomething Solo / Skywalker offspring in the film, which seems to count Cumberbatch out at a wise thirty-seven years old. Would Abrams use him as a villain for the second time in a row, or might he make an infinitely more appealing and energetic new Jedi hero, perhaps keeping the peace with Luke Skywalker? I know I’d rather cheer for Cumberbatch than hiss at him.

Adding fuel to this already hot rumor is the fact that Cumberbatch backed out of Guillermo Del Toro‘s Crimson Peak. The actor was set for one of the film’s leads. Crimson Peak and Star Wars VII are set to start filming around the same time next year, and no reason was given for Cumberbatch‘s departure when that news hit. You would think the actor would have to have gotten a bigger or more exciting role to drop out of the Del Toro project. Cumberbatch has become a household name with Sherlock and his recent outing as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, so he’s become something of a hot commodity as of late. As a fan of his work, I’d have to say it’s incredibly exciting to think ‘The Batch’ could be taking a trip to a galaxy far, far away. My personal hope is that if this rumor is true he plays a hero instead of another Abrams‘ villain. What do you think? Would you like to see Cumberbatch go from Star Trek to Star Wars?

UPDATE: Some new details regarding Cumberbatch‘s possible involvement with Star Wars VII have emerged in the hours since the rumor hit. BadassDigest.Com is reporting that they too have heard those rumors and that Cumberbatch‘s role is that of a bad guy, probably a Sith. Not only will the actor have to drop out of Crimson Peak, he’s also have to shed some other commitments he currently has since the role is planned to be one that is important to the entirety of the new trilogy. It really sounds like Cumberbatch could be the new Darth Vader. No we don’t mean he’ll be the actual Vader, he’ll just be the recurring big bad who tries to kill whoever our heroes end up being. What do you think about Cumberbatch possibly being the new trilogies villain?
