TMNT News: William Fichtner Signs A Three Picture Deal To Play A Guy Who Calls Himself SHREDDER
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were scratching their heads when it was announced that William Fichtner would be joining the Jonathan Liebesman and Michael Bay produced TMNT reboot. Fichtner is a great actor, it’s just he doesn’t quite fit the bill of the big bad Foot Clan leader named Oroku Saki. People haven’t been too hot on the Turtle’s reboot as a whole, but Fichtner revealed some new details about Shredder, or rather Eric Sachs, and how he has a close connection to the mutated turtles.
Speaking with Flicks and the City, the actor talked about getting the call from his agent and what drew him to the film. You can watch Fichtner talk about the movie in the video below from roughly the 12:00 mark to 15:30, but Fichtner said he was drawn to the movie because it was different from the cartoon he knew from watching it with his nieces and nephews:
[Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles] always had sort of a bouncy cartoon feel to me, which is great, that’s why it was appealing. That’s not this movie. This movie is live action, Michael Bay is producing it. Jonathan Liebesman is directing it. It’s not like any Mutant NInja Turtles thing you’ve ever seen before. It’s freaky, they’re cool, and they’re mutants, and they look awesome. It’s tough, and it’s going to be really, really great.
Part of the reimagining of the Turtles is a brand new origin story for Shredder. Fichtner probably reveals more details than he’s supposed to, but he says we’ll see an “interesting” take on Shredder…or rather Eric Sachs who eventually becomes the Shredder:
Well I play a guy named Eric Sachs, and we find out that Eric Sachs is somebody else too. I can’t give away too much in the story but I can tell you that who Shredder is in the telling of this Turtles is unlike any other telling of the story before. His connection and relationship to the Turtles is a bit surprising, and for an actor playing it, the backstory, which comes out in this film, is really intriguing… We made some changes while shooting the film that I thought are just awesome.
As far as the look of the guy that eventually becomes something named Shredder, Fichtner said the character “dons himself with armor, and that’s who he is and that happens in this story. It’s the backstory on how it all began with the turtles and the character of Eric Sachs. It isn’t by chance that he knows the turtles.” And if you were worried they would mess the Turtles up in one movie, there could possibly be three chances to screw it up. The actor said future films depend on the success of the first one, but he signed a three picture deal and he thinks “you’re going to see a few of them.” So there you go. Sounds like we’re getting a Shredder in name only. Hopefully this all just sounds bad on paper (and video) and they’re able to pull it off and prove us wrong. But it doesn’t sound too great just now, does it?
