Thomas Kretschmann Says We’ll See More Of Baron Von Strucker After AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
This past January it was announced that Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong, Stalingrad, van Helsing on NBC‘s Dracula) had landed one of the secondary villain roles in the highly-anticipated Avengers sequel. It was revealed that Kretschmann would be playing Baron Wolfgang von Strucker in the Joss Whedon directed sequel. The villain would play a sizable part in the beginning of the film before Ultron hits the scene. Kretschmann recently spoke about his role in the film and revealed that we could be seeing a lot more of Strucker in the near future.
Speaking with the German site B.Z. Berlin (with translations from CBM), the actor mentioned that he has already filmed some scenes as Strucker. Principal photography doesn’t start until the end of this month, but some filming has taken place in Africa and a shot or two at Pinewood Studios in England. Kretschmann apparently showed up at one of the locations to film something. He said of his first day on set “Oh yes, I was nervous. I was overprepared; then on the set I went up to Joss Whedon who passes for a genius, and said ‘this is my first day, this is huge, please have patience with me, I’m a bit nervous.’“
The actor also stated that he had signed a multi-picture deal, as does most everyone who appears in a Marvel movie. What’s interesting is that Kretschmann says there is already talks going on about where his character could end up next. He says “That’s great of course. I have a multi-picture deal which means I will not only appear in the 2nd part, but they’re planning with me for a longer period of time. But I don’t know details yet, they’re keeping their cards close to their chest – top secret!“
The Baron is a Nazi officer turned head of HYDRA, so he’s been a villain of both Nick Fury and Captain America. With Captain America 3 essentially confirmed already, Strucker could be someone Cap has to take down in the third film. With a small part in Age of Ultron, they could be setting something up that has implications further down the road. Strucker is said to be the one responsible for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into contact with the Avengers. We’ll just have to wait and see how things play out. What do you think about the actor’s comments? Are you happy to hear Baron Strucker could be a recurring villain?
