The Reason Shailene Woodley Was Cut From The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Reveals A Big Spoiler
If you couldn’t guess it from the title, this article contains a big possible spoiler for Marc Webb‘s upcoming Spidey sequel. If you don’t want to know, then turn back now and read one of the other fantastic articles on this site. Otherwise, read on to find out a potential reason Shailene Woodley‘s role as Mary Jane Watson was cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It turns out its not as big of a drama as we thought. No, it had nothing to do with fanboys harping on Woodley‘s looks either.
Hollywood Life just posted a story featuring quotes from “a source close to production” who told them the reason Woodley was cut was purely a decision based on the story they’re telling this time around. We’ve presented a few articles pointing out the fact Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) was wearing some clothes that looked a whole lot like the ones her comic book counterpart wore when she was flung off a bridge to her death. It seems all but officially confirmed that Gwen will follow her father’s fate in the film. That’s the exact reason Woodley was dropped:
Emma Stone’s character dies in the next film and that really would take a bunch out of the film if Spider-Man all the sudden starts dating a new girl so close to an important characters death. They were noticing this occurring as they filmed Shailene’s scenes. They want to make the death of Gwen Stacy really mean something and then it will leave room for Shailene to shine in the third film.
The site also says there were rumors, though this is the first I’m reading about them, that Stone wasn’t too fond of another lady coming in and having a romance with real-life boyfriend Andrew Garfield in the film that helped bring them together. Apparently that’s not the case for Woodley‘s role being cut either. It also seems that even though Gwen will be kicking the bucket, she still may turn up in Spider-Man 3 and beyond:
There is no jealousy, this is definitely a creative decision and Emma was also told that she would have her character get the proper send off and probably would appear in flashbacks and nightmares in the third film. When you are a huge star like Emma you get things thrown to you even if you don’t ask or demand them.
So there you have it. The big Shailene Woodley/Mary Jane drama turned out to be just a story decision. It makes sense that they wouldn’t want to introduce a love triangle and then have one of the corners die. It would make Peter look pretty bad if he hopped on over to Mary Jane‘s after Gwen died. It will look a lot better to have her introduced in the third film and then act as the person who helps Peter Parker overcome the guilt and sadness losing Gwen will undoubtedly cause him to go through. What do you think? Do you buy this as the real reason for Woodley being cut from the filim?
