THE FLASH TV Show Will Be Making Some Changes To Iris West

by

iris westGrant Gustin made his debut on last night’s Arrow as crime scene detective Barry Allen. Gustin has one more episode alongside Stephen Amell, then he’ll go off and work on his own show. The Flash pilot will begin filming next year with a late fall debut tentatively planned. Today we learn a little more information about The Flash’s supporting cast by way of two casting notices. It looks like they’ll be making some major changes to Barry’s main squeeze, Iris West.

BludHavenBanter.com posted two character breakdowns from David Rapaport casting. You may remember yesterday the same agency posted photos of a casting call listing the characters iris West and Detective West (original story here), well now we know a little more about those two characters. The site offered these descriptions:

IRIS – 22-28 – African-American – As smart as she is beautiful, Iris is in grad school studying psychology. She’s also Barry’s mile a minute, fast-talking, quick-witted best friend. Her father, Detective West, took in Barry when his mother was murdered, and his father was wrongly accused and imprisoned for her murder. In a tough childhood for Barry, she was the one “not tough” thing. She’s unaware of Barry’s strong feelings for her.
DETECTIVE WEST – Late 40s to Early 50s – African American -Detective West is an honest, blue-collar cop who’s seen it all. A soulful, funny caring father to Iris, and a surrogate father to Barry, West came up through the foster system himself. He took in Barry after his mother’s murder and his father’s imprisonment. He believes in Barry and supports Barry’s efforts to prove his father’s innocence.

So instead of her job in the comics as a reporter, Iris will now be in grad school. Her family will also have taken Barry in after his mother’s death. That’s another departure from the comics. The fact that she is African-American should be a non-factor, but that does mean we can expect to see a different take on Wally West if they end up introducing the junior speedster. With her father being a part of the show as well, we may be seeing a relationship similar to Laurel Lance’s on Arrow. Casting for the new show is underway, so hopefully we hear a few of the additions soon. What do you think about the character breakdowns? Any actresses in mind for Iris?
