That’s A Huge Budget! DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Pushes Into AVATAR Territory

We knew that Bryan Singer’s latest installment in the X-Men franchise was going to be big, not just story-wise either. Just about all of the cast members from the franchise he started- the ones that Brett Ratner didn’t kill off anyway- and a fair amount of the cast from Matthew Vaughn’s acclaimed First Class installment would be returning. The amount of money needed to fulfill those contracts would be vast on its own, but then you add in all the special effects that would be needed and you have yourself a big budget. How big exactly? According to a report in the Calgary Herald (via Heat Vision), that budget is said to be just behind Avatar in that regards, making it the second most expensive movie in Fox’s history.

James Cameron’s Avatar cost the studio about $237 million. In comparison, The Wolverine had a budget of $120 million and Vaugn’s First Class checked in at $160 million. That’s a big jump in cost and assuming the report is true, I’d bet a significant amount of that budget is going to its stars. Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen- those are spendy names. The studio has all but lost the faith of many fans and dropping that kind of money on a film is a big gamble. However, the last few installments have more than doubled their return when you calculate the global box office take.

For those wondering, these numbers aren’t quite at the level of some films. Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End tipped the scales at a massive $300 million Spider-Man 3 cost a hefty $258 million and Disney’s epic flop John Carter came in right at the $250 million mark. I’m hoping that their plan wasn’t to just throw money at the project int he hopes people will like the actors and the pretty scenery. The first trailer we saw, which can be viewed below, showed us a much darker and dramatic film than we’ve seen in the past. I’m a big fan of Singer’s last outing in the X-Men franchise, and one of the few that was happy to see him come back, but he and Fox have a lot riding on this film.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will hit theaters next summer and sees Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Halle Berry, Ellen Page, Daniel Cudmore, Shawn Ashmore, Anna Paquin and Lucas Till all reprise their roles. Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Evan Peters, BingBing Fan, BooBoo Stewart, Aden Canto and Josh Helman have all joined the cast as well. That’s a lot of characters, I’m hoping it’s a great flick!
