Terrence Howard Blames Robert Downey Jr. For Making His Rhodey Hit The Road
It has been five years since Terrence Howard got cut from Iron Man 2, but the actor is still pretty steamed about it. He has been very candid in interviews about how he feels regarding his brief time as Tony Stark‘s best friend Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, going so far as to say that Iron Man ruined his career. Well in a recent interview the actor says the real reason he was replaced by Don Cheadle in the sequel was because of his ‘friend‘ Robert Downey Jr.
Appearing on Bravo TV to promote his new film The Best Man Holiday, Howard was asked why he didn’t appear in Iron Man 2 and 3. It was then he let everyone have it with both barrels (via CBM):
Would you like to really know? Well, it turns out in order for…this is going to get me in a lot of trouble. It turns out that the person I helped become Iron Man, when it came time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out.
When the host brought up that rumors suggested Howard wanted the same money as Downey, who quickly became Marvel‘s highest paid actor (and the highest paid actor of all in 2013), Howard quickly shot that notion down:
We did a three picture deal. You did the deal ahead of time. A certain amount for the first one, a certain amount for the second one a certain amount, a certain amount for the third. They came to me for the second one and said, ‘We will pay you 1/8th of what we contractually had for you because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.’ I called my friend that I helped get the first job, and he didn’t call me back for three months.
Things got even more awkward when the actor was asked how things are with his ‘friend‘ now. Howard deadpanned “Oh I love him. God is going to bless him.” There were audible gasps from the audience, which just punctuated the whole thing quite nicely. You can see why Howard is so mad. Downey is off making hundreds of millions of dollars for doing Avengers 2 and 3 while he’s stuck doing movies like Best Man Holiday. The actor has never shied away from talking about Iron Man, this is the first time he ever really let loose in this fashion. I think Downey will now take longer than three months to return his calls. What do you think about Howard‘s comments?
