Not much is known in regards to Fox’s reboot of the Fantastic Four reboot, other that Chronicle’s Josh Trank will be helming the project, with Matthew Vaughn serving as producer on the film. This is, without a doubt, a rather impressive duo to have working on a comic book film together and they will hopefully bring some life to a franchise that is in need of a little refreshing.

Coming from Twitter, @lemon_buzz to be specific, is news that the film has started pre-production work up in Vancouver and it looks as though they are gunning for a September 2013 date to begin filming. If this is the case, we can likely expect some more news on the project , including casting news, which should be interesting as it will be a telling look into the direction of the film.

As it stands now, the film has a Spring 2015 release date, which gives the production team plenty of time to make things right. As we all know, two previous Fantastic Four films have already been released and while they had impressive box office numbers, both fans and critics alike panned them for their lack-luster stories and iffy casting.

With Trank and Vaughn at the helm, things may be looking up. Let’s not forget that Fox is in the process of creating their own movie-verse, much like Marvel has been doing. Mark Millar was brought in to oversee the process of this and he’s been in touch with directors of the X-Men films, Bryan Singer, so it’s possible we could see some tie-ins to the X-Men world with this new FF4 reboot.

So, let the fantasy casting begin! Who would you like to see land the four leading roles? Are you expecting Doctor Doom to be the main villain, or would you rather have someone we haven’t seen, like Moleman? How about a real Galactus?

So Kick-Ass 2 is scheduled to premiere August 16th in the US, amidst a sea of fan expectation. The previous installment was well-received, earning several awards and critical acclaim.

I, for one, am not that thrilled.

I know, I know. Super hero movies are not all supposed to be the new Citizen Kane of their genre every time a new one comes out, but please, bear with me for a moment.

I have a huge man crush on Mark Millar. Or at least I did until he adapted the screenplay for Kick-Ass. It was a sublime book, oozing zeitgeist from every page, filled with an overwhelming ambiance of pathetic underachievement and social awkwardness, beautifully laced with sex, violence and profanity. To me, it was just as enjoyable to read as The Guys. In a different temporal context, I truly believe it could have reached the cult status that Cerebus enjoys today. That’s how much I loved it.

An then, out of the blue, without any evidence of cohersion, Millar himself prostituted and twisted his own work into a very disposable and bland, formulaic story with an anticlimactic ending on par with the blasphemy committed against Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

Yes, it’s a trademark of basement-dwelling, acne-ridden comic geeks to be outraged and disgusted by minor changes and nuances, but unlike making the Kingpin and Heimdall black or giving Spiderman organic web shooters, these alterations were anything but subtle and turned out to be counter-productive for the final work.

It’s nearly 3 years too late to scream “spoiler alert”, so if you didn’t read the first book or watch the first movie, deal with it. Kick-Ass actually hooking up with the girl instead of pretending to be gay to be near her, the whole scene with the jet-pack, the not-at-all pathetic ending all just killed the whole story. They butchered it, neutered it, removed the uncomfortable teenage bits and made it unnecessarily digestible for a broader audience. Exactly the polar opposite of everything that Super accomplished that same year.

The new trailer for Kick-Ass 2 looks badass, there’s no denying it, and the cast is amazing. From what I’ve read online the soundtrack and special effects look promising to say the least, but Millar pulled such a great George Lucas out of his ass last time, I feel disappointed already.

But just as a refresher, the story opens in a ravaged future where mutants have been hunted down and eliminated by Sentinels, giant robots whose only purpose is to seek out and destroy mutants. In order to prevent this from happening, mutants send one of their own kind back to stop a key assassination from occurring.

While we know that this story will be the focus for the Days of Future Past film, details are still sketchy and we don’t know exactly which mutant will be sent back from the future. In the comics, it was none other than Kitty Pryde. Not long ago, it was announced that some of the cast from previous X-Men films would be returning to reprise their roles, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Shawn Ashmore, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin and Ellen Page, who played Kitty Pryde in The Last Stand. So, does this mean Page’s Kitty Pryde will have a more expanded and significant role? Mark Millar, who Fox brought on to oversee their comic book properties last year, hinted that may be the case.

“Ach, I cannae get into that [laughs]. As soon as I say something it will turn into a big internet story. Let me put it this way though: Kitty Pryde fans will not be disappointed.”

Take that how you want, but I think it’s pretty self explanatory. However, it has been previously reported that the focus of the film will remain on the First Class crew and that the other returning cast members would have a smaller role in the film. It could be that Pryde will be the exception to that statement, also.

On a side note, Millar was asked about the Sentinels and their part int he film. His response is positive, saying “I don’t really want to give too much away but the Sentinels are a big feature of this story. They will be cool and this will deliver on all of the teasers.” Last we saw the giant robots was int he Danger Room scene in The Last Stand, so hopefully we get to see more of the mutant hunters and that they’ve also had a bit of a re-design!

Slowly but surely, Fox’s reboot of the first family of comics, Fantastic Four, is coming together. What we know right now is that Josh Trank, the man behind the surprisingly good Chronicle was tapped to helm the reboot and that the film will hit theaters in March of 2015. That’s still a ways away, so don’t expect too much news on casting for a while.

Today, Mark Millar, who was hired by Fox to oversee their comic book films from here on out, talked with SciFiNow and gave us a bit more info on the tone of the film and if Millar isn’t blowing smoke up our skirts, we could be in for a treat.

“From what I’ve seen and from talking to him – he and I have had dinner a couple of times and we talk quite regularly as well – he’s contemporizing it. I think he’s just making it work for the screen – he’s a great storyteller.”

If you saw Chronicle, then you know that Trank took a comic book-style concept and put a darker spin on the idea. I don’t want to say that is what he is doing here, but it will definitely have a different feel to it than Tim Story’s previous films. As for the tone of the reboot, we could be in for something spectacular.

“What I wasn’t expecting actually was just how funny and likeable he could make this as well as getting the more awesome moments on screen – I use awesome in the traditional British sense and not the California sense awesome, you know? The Ridley Scott moments, and the Fantastic Four really are jaw-dropping in the same way you feel when you saw Alien for the first time. There’s some moments in this – not to be specific – that are actually gonna be phenomenal on screen and stuff you haven’t seen in a superhero movie before.”

Again, if Millar is speaking the truth here, then the Fantastic Four reboot could be pretty cool. Trank is a capable director and I think he was a good choice for the franchise. However, if you look back at the hype Green Lantern received by the cast and crew, then Millar’s comments may strike you as familiar. Obviously, only time will tell here.

Kick-Ass 2 is about to start shooting with all the original cast returning for the second outing. Some new info about the sequel and how the story will unfold has been uncovered by Moviehole. The Jeff Wadlow directed sequel of the Mark Millar comic will be like some other super hero’s second outings: the secret identity is revealed. If you couldn’t figure out from the title, there are story details in this article which means it might be spoilery if you don’t want to know such things.

Dave’s identity as ‘Kick-Ass’ is only really revealed to the one extra person, but it’s someone important. And it has repercussions. Hit-Girl’s identity is also widely known by this point – and it evokes much nasty yabbering behind Mindy’s back by her schoolmates (she’s nicknamed “Captain Muffin-Muncher”). The worst of the mean girls, Brooke, is your typical prissy jock-marrying wannabe who controls the thoughts and feelings of her teenage followers and disciples (including innocent young Lois, whom ultimately forms a bond with Mindy). But ‘Hit-Girl’, never one to shy away from a confrontation and seemingly always equipped with the perfect weapon of self defense, gets Brooke and her bitch gang back in… let’s say, rather spectacular fashion. It involves gadgetry, projectile vomiting and much begging. There will be so much cheering in the cinema!

Also, Dave’s dad will be back and in a larger role, probably very similar to the comics. The role for Chris/Red Mist’s Uncle Ralph is going through the casting stages, and Moviehole says expect it to be filled by someone of a “Mark Strone-esque” stature.

If you’ve read Millar’s sequel, this sounds familiar but with a slightly different twist. The first movie did diverge from the comics on some points, so expect the same thing from this one. Hit-Girl’s solo book which comes out later this year will also play an important part in the first half of the movie. The film starts shooting very soon, so all kinds of juicy tidbits and news should be coming out in no time at all.

With AvX in full swing, there was no doubt in anyones mind that they were going to be ruling the May charts. But no one thought by this big a lead. Look at the bottom of this article to see how everything worked out.

As you can see Avengers vs X-Men ruled the top ten. DC owns the rest of the top ten. It’s not complete surprising, and it follows the trend of the last few months. What seems to be, and not a good thing, is how the DC books have been selling the past few months. See, DC books never seem to just hit the middle. They sell a ton, or they sell nothing. Batman sells over 130,000 issues, but there are some like Voodoo (which was cancelled) that sold 13,000 issues. Nothing ever seems to land in the middle of “selling ok.” Fans complain that by September, about a quarter of DC’s books will be related to Batman, but all the books sell, even the atrocious Batman: The Dark Knight. If you don’t want as many Batman related books, DON’T BUY THEM. Most Marvel books sell ok, but they sell enough to make a profit. Even the lesser sellers seem to stay consistent in their numbers. Spider-Man books haven’t sold this well in a long time. You have Amazing at 25 and 26, Venom twice in the top 100, Scarlet Spider at 81, and Avenging Spider-Man at 61.

While Avengers vs X-Men hasn’t received the best response from critics (#5 review is here), it’s selling like crazy. Marvel will no doubt continue with the trend of a big event every year. Fans need to stop complaining about how “bad books sell.” Well don’t buy them. Fans buy the book then complain. You need to make a statement with your wallet. If you don’t like the book, don’t buy it. Hopefully enough people will realize that the book is bad and won’t be around anymore. But if it’s selling, SOMEONE has to be enjoying the book. Keep that in mind.

DC can’t be happy that quite a few of their books are barely selling at all. I know that having all these different “waves” keeps the lineup fresh, but I don’t see any of these new books, besides Talon, making that big an impact on the top 100. The same could be said for a few of the Marvel books coming out. Hawkeye will sell ok, probably around how much Daredevil sells each month. But Gambit, which I’m looking forward too, has an uphill battle. Marvel has done a decent job of late of putting good artists and writers on a book, ones with a genuine vision for the character, instead of just slapping a writer and artist on a book. Bottom line, it’s hard to sell a book anymore unless it has a big name character attached to it. Captain Marvel is the only wild card in the upcoming month. It’s got some great talent attached to it, and a character who had one of the longer runs for a female character in history. It could go either way. With summer over, which seems to be a big time to launch new books, it’s going to be an interesting fall.

With DC releasing the first volume of a lot of their books, it’s no surprise that they are taking up a good chunk of the TPB market. Also no surprise, The Walking Dead is peppered throughout the list. Look to see these start to rise again as October comes closer. The biggest surprise to me was how fast Kick-Ass 2 made it up the list. The sequel to Mark Millar and John Romita JR’s acclaimed series wasn’t received well by critics, and I know a lot of people who flat out hated it. Spider-Man: Season One is the only Season One title near the top of the list. Marvel must be happy with how that sold.

We know that Kick-Ass 2 wrapped up not too long ago in the comic medium and that not too long from now it will be making its way onto the screen with new director Jeff Wadlow. Writer Mark Millar talked a little about the film as well as how Kick-Ass will wrap up with the third series of the comic.

Speaking with Digital Spy, Millar talked about how Matthew Vaughn handpicked Wadlow to direct when he knew that he would be working on the X-Men franchise. With the director squared away, the next concern was if the original cast would be able to return. When asked if Chloe Moretz’s schedule would allow her to be Hit-Girl again:

As far as we know everyone is scheduled to come back, unless somebody is hit by a bus or something. Chloe has a busy schedule but she has to stop sometime.

Millar is known, in the words of Clockwork Orange, for a bit of the ultra-violence and Kick-Ass 2 is no exception. There are some pretty grisly scenes in those panels, and Millar was asked if they could make the transition to screen:

Every horrible scene in the book will be in the film. The c**t line in the first one, everybody said ‘there’s no way you’re getting that in the movie’, but it happened and it’s the same thing with this. Everybody is saying ‘you can’t have a gang rape scene with supervillains’ and ‘you can’t have the dog’s head cut off’, but every single one of those scenes will go in it.

Before moving on to the comics, Millar was asked how the Hit-Girl miniseries would affect the film. He said that the first 30 minutes of Kick-Ass 2 would be all Hit-Girl with the next 70 minutes is the Kick-Ass 2 comic.

Millar was asked how Kick-Ass would continue given the cliffhanger the second series ended on. He stated that the third book is the last one, and that there would be no more after it. He said he always saw an end, and that he plans to finish it in a year’s time. He did talk about how the third one will shape up.

People who’ve read the comic will know that the second one ends on a cliffhanger. Hit-Girl’s been arrested and she’s in prison, Dave has lost his dad and he’s kind of destitute. The third one will be set two years later, and it’s about where their lives are now, picking it up from there. Hit-Girl has killed 80-something people by this point, so they’re never going to let her out. She’s like a tiny Myra Hindley. It’s basically illegal to wear a costume at this point, so that’s quite interesting. I used to love Marvel Comics where the cops were chasing superheroes, seeing them as menaces because they’re not licensed in any way. So I kind of like the idea of bringing that back, because in reality there’s no way a cop or a fireman is going to let a guy in a suit run into a building. I like the idea that after they have stopped a mugging they have to run away for the police. That old-fashioned superhero thing.

We’ve heard a little bit about the next Kick-Ass movie, and now Mark Millar is talking about it a little more as he promotes the new solo Hit-Girl comic coming out in about 4 weeks. Millar took to twitter to tell fans that the Hit-Girl miniseries will serve as the first part of the Kick-Ass 2 movie. Millar spoke with ComicBookResources about the Hit-Girl book and what we can expect.

Millar stated that he had Hit-Girl just as a supporting character in the first series, but found he enjoyed writing for her a lot. He found the 5 issue solo series as a good place to really expand the character and have some fun. It’s the Hit-Girl we know and love from the first Kick-Ass, but it also fills in the gaps between Kick-Ass 1 and 2.

The mini series takes place between the two Kick-Ass volumes, and the supervillain story really picks up in Kick-Ass 2. So here we get the Red Mist where he was at the end of the first book or where people saw him at the end of the first movie. He’s dedicated himself to doing this and trying to go out to start the world’s first super crime. He’s already been active in Kick-Ass 2 so here you see him putting on that mask and going out for the first time. It’s almost like what Kick-Ass did – he’s trying to go viral.

In the final pages of Kick-Ass and the start of Kick-Ass 2 we see Mindy (Hit-Girl) in school and completely out of her element. Millar touched on having Mindy adjusting to her new life.

[T]o put her in a school environment is really great, because all those things you’d think would make her tough actually make her really vulnerable. And she’s not allowed to shoot anyone, so she can’t really mix with normal kids. Put her in a school, and she’s automatically the class freak. She’s totally cool as Hit-Girl, but then when she walks into school, she doesn’t know the new band that all the kids are into. She’s never watched Glee. She doesn’t give a s**t about Glee.

Millar has tweeted and took to his website’s Millar World Forum to tell how this miniseries will be the opening parts of the Kick-Ass 2 movie with the entire Kick-Ass 2 comics serving as the second and third act. Below is the first look at the new variant cover courtesy of CBR. As you can see, it is clearly a Game of Thrones homage.

Universal Pictures is supposedly talking about continuing the Kick-Ass franchise with Jeff Wadlow attached to direct a script he wrote. Deadline is reporting that the film is tentatively going to start production in August. Original cast member Chrstopher Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist), Chloe Moretz (Hit-Girl), and Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) are in talks to reprise their roles.

Wadlow directed the movie Cry_wolf and Never Back Down. He wrote the script for Kick-Ass 2, which was rumored to be overseen and tweaked by Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn directed the first Kick-Ass and wrote the script with Jane Goldman. It’s reported that Vaughn will produce the second outing and get a co-writer credit. Lionsgate released the first one, but Vaughn had control of the sequel and is working with Universal.

There are some concerns, mainly Chloe Moretz being all grown-up compared to her comic book counterpart. They will have to deviate from the comics to some degree to explain the more mature Hit-Girl. Maybe they’ll call her Hit-Woman or something, I don’t know. Kick-Ass 2 was written by Mark Millar with art by John Romita Jr.

The second outing for Kick-Ass was very disappointing in my opinion, and the director they have lined up is an odd choice with not a lot of experience. My hopes aren’t high, they are almost non-existent but this is definetly a movie I’ll have to keep my eye on.

New Image Comics series sells out of first issue!

HELL YEAH #1, the debut of a new Image Comics series by Joe Keatinge (GLORY) and Andre Szymanowicz has sold out ahead of its release today, March 7. The issue has immediately gone back to press and a second printing (JAN128123) will be in stores on April 4, the same day that HELL YEAH #2 (FEB120507) is released.

Keatinge made a splash earlier this year, penning the relaunch of Rob Liefeld‘s GLORY (drawn by Ross Campbell), but his own series explores superheroics in a different way. The sons and daughters of superheroes, lost in the shadows cast by the glow of their idealized and idolized parents, have grown up to be just like any kids of rich and famous parents — some of them are rebellious, some of them are spoiled, some of them are overachievers with something to prove. And all of them need to save the world.

“I’m very stoked the reception for Hell Yeah has been so intense,”

said writer Keatinge.

“Andre and I are putting our all into what’s our ultimate passion project. We’re very excited to know there’s an equally passionate readership eager to give it a read.”

“I’m very grateful to the awesome comic readers, retailers and Image for taking us on,”

This is why I LOVE Image Comics:

A Message from Jonathan Ross and Bryan Hitch

Okay, that’s a bold statement and possibly contentious enough to get you to read this but it’s absolutely true.

AMERICA’S GOT POWERS launches in April from Image by us, (Bryan Hitch and Jonathan Ross). We told you a bit about it in January. What we hadn’t told you until now was that issue one has THIRTY-EIGHT pages of story and is still only $2.99.

Here’s why.

Bryan says: Since I started drawing Ultimates issue one in late 2001, I may have only delivered two or three 22 page books. I’ve always pushed the story either with additional visual material to underscore what’s been written or to pump action to the level we all wanted but would never have had the room for. So I just drew it the way it felt right to do so.

Go count the pages in each issue of Ultimates, Captan America: Reborn or FF. Not many 22 page issues. I got hell of course but my deal has always been that giving the story the best work it can have is the only deal that matters. I even did some pages for free to get them in the issues.

We have taken stuff out of AMERICA’S GOT POWERS issue one, moved it around and walked around the room whistling. It should have been a 22 page first issue but there were things we felt had to be there and those scenes needed to breath. The story needed to be told properly; it ALWAYS does. So we put it back in and told the story the way we wanted to. Thirty-eight pages of it!

Normally a book this size would be at least $3.99 but that didn’t seem fair to us. It was our decision to make the first issue this big and it’s not right to ask you guys to pay extra for it. We are proud of AMERICA’S GOT POWERS, insanely proud and we want to pass that on.

Big time.

We’re just another small business like many of the retailers and we believe completely in the story we’re trying to tell so instead of putting out a 20 page issue and asking you to pay $3.99 for it, we’re giving you nearly DOUBLE that for a dollar less.

It’s had a knock-on effect though. Initially we had intended to release issues one and two in the same month, a sort of double whammy to kick-start the book. We’ve changed that plan slightly as most of that material is now in a single 38-page issue rather than two separate books.

As a result issue two will move backwards slightly into May, issue three into June etc so our team doesn’t kill themselves providing this much awesome in a single month

So we ARE still releasing what we intended to in April; the same TWO ISSUES of story but now it’s in one book and only the price of a single. We’re giving you what we said we would but at half the price.

$2.99

Boom.

And, to emphasize that boom, here’s a sneak peek at a big boom in a cool two pager from the first massive double-sized issue of AMERICA’S GOT POWERS.

Did we mention it was 38 pages at $2.99? It’s also worth mentioning that we can’t guarantee any of the other issues won’t exceed 20 pages either. Though if they do, they’ll never exceed $2.99

Enjoy the pencils sneak peek. Over the next few days, we’re going to properly introduce you to our characters and the amazing world they live in along with loads of pencils and inks from the first issue to get you excited.

Jonathan and Bryan

Comic Book Movie found in Millar‘s Twitter timeline, that Mark Hamill, the eternal Luke Skywalker, will play an important role in the film.

Just off the phone with @HamillHimself. What an absolutely lovely man! You can find out why we’re talking over the coming weeks.

For anyone who wants a hint about the comic and movie Mark Hamill and I were planning last night just click: comicbookresources.com/?page=article&

He then went on to confirm to CBM that:

Hamill won’t necessarily be the ‘star’ in the film but that he will have a pivotal role and that the two leads will be British.”

The miniseries, which will be launched later this month, was created when Vaughn and Millar watched Casino Royale and start questioning why they didn’t include the training of the super spy James Bond.

The comic is about, among other things, the training of a rebellious kid from north London to become a kind of James Bond. Vaughn is currently writing the script for the film adaptation which, according to Millar, will be a Kick-Ass version of SHIELD and U.N.C.L.E..

There is a schedule set for the production. More details are expected soon.

Image Comics will publish the series, which focuses on young superheroes daunted by the prospect of succeeding their parents as crimefighters.

Millar told CBR:

“I think there’s something sad and quite unique where these ten or 20 slightly damaged super-people feel they can never live up to their parents. And something even more tragic about the parents recognising that their children, in many ways, are their failures.

“That’s the thread running in the background, and on top of all this is this massive adventure story with aliens and robots and amazing ships and vehicles and a whole world I’ve been building with respect to what’s happening here in the real world.”

Jupiter’s Children features artwork from Frank Quitely, with whom Millar previously collaborated on DC Comics‘ The Authority.

Millar will also debut Supercrooks in March this year, followed by The Secret Service in April, and Hit Girl one month later.
