We’ve got two previews for some new books hitting comic book stories January 23rd. Our double preview page features the debut of Young Avengers and the follow-up of sorts to Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe.

Young Avengers debuts featuring a new team. The crew includes Wiccan, Hulkling, Hawkeye, Loki, Marvel Boy, and Ms. America. Kieron Gillen writes the series and Jamie McKelvie and Mike Norton provide art.

Also kicking off is a new Deadpool miniseries that follows hot on the heels of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe. Cullen Bunn returns to guide Deadpool in his journey to destroy all of fictions most popular characters. First up- Moby Dick! The series features art by Matteo Lolli and Sean Parsons. Check out the solicit info and preview pages below!

Legacy isn’t a dirty word… but it’s an irrelevant one. It’s not important what our parents did. It matters what WE do. Someone has to save the world. You’re someone. Do the math. The critically acclaimed team of Gillen/McKelvie/Wilson (with added Norton Sauce) decide to reinvent the teen superhero comic for the 21st century, uniting Wiccan, Hulkling and Hawkeye with Loki, Marvel Boy and Ms. America. No pressure. Young Avengers is as NOW! as the air in your lungs, and twice as vital. It’s the book that knows Hyperbole is the BEST! THING! EVER!

Matt Fraction is one quirky writer. Anyone who has followed his career knows this. Hawkeye seems to be the perfect writing opportunity for his writing style. #2 is a better issue than #1, and that’s a hard feat to top.

Fraction introduces Kat Bishop to the book. She is Hawkeye from the Young Avengers. Fraction gives them her and Clint a great back and forth, and one that makes the read want them to get together. Until you remember she is very young. This must have been what Fraction was thinking, as it’s one of the sub plots of the issue. It’s humorous, and gives Fraction another opportunity to critique the character of Clint Barton. In fact, that’s what this issue is all about; bringing the past of Clint Barton to the present and showing how far he has come since the character was first introduced. Not only is it fun to read, but it works as a catch up for readers who aren’t familiar with Clint. Fraction seems to be painting Clint as a stand up guy who just happens to hate himself. Similar to what past writers have done with Clint, but Fraction is giving his own take on the character. Instead of translating the dialogue of the French ring leader, Fraction ops to go for some laughs. I’ve always been one to ignore what language something is translated in, as (once I see dialogue surrounded in parenthesis), I just assume it’s being translated.

Hawkeye seems to be using a serialized format instead of arcs. It’s a writing style that should be used more in comics. J. Michael Straczynski’s run on Amazing Spider-Man used this writing style to great effect. I hope that Hakweye continues to be like this. The quick stops in time to have Clint explain the people he is talking too is a nice touch, like in Burn Notice. What struck me as a goo thread going forward was how determined Clint seems to be to NOT sleep with Kate Bishop. Even though she is young, the reader can pick up on Clint’s attraction. It’s mutual respect coupled with awe of what she can do. Of course the best archer in the world would be attracted to one of the up and comers in archery.

David Aja’s artwork is nothing short of spectacular. The quick panels bring the reader into how Clint Barton sees the world. What floored me was when Clint shot an arrow, and Aja broke down Kate’s facial expressions as each millisecond passed. It’s incredibly simple, but works so well. I’ve seen a lot of David Aja’s work, and this is arguable the best issue he has penciled to date. It rivals Secret Avengers #19, which he did with Warren Ellis. A handful of these pages are frame worthy. Matt Hollingsworth’s purple shade is used very well here. It will no doubt turn some people off, as it can get a little over bearing at some points.

This might be the last time I review Hawkeye, as it’s a difficult book to review. Much like Daredevil, there are only so many things a person can say each month to get people to read this book. If you like Immortal Iron Fist, please pick up this book.

Hawkeye #2 gets 5/5.

Great news for all of the MARVEL lovers out there!

Remember when we heard that Joss Whedon was going to direct The Avengers Sequel and also a TV show?

Well thanks to the fine folks at Deadline, we now have confirmation:

S.H.I.E.L.D. will be written by Whedon, his bother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Joss Whedon also is set to direct the pilot, schedule permitting. Production on the pilot, which marks the first live-action Marvel TV project to get a green light, will start immediately. Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Tancharoen executive produce with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.

The project had been in the works at Marvel TV and ABC Studios for some time. Earlier this month, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that it had signed an exclusive film and TV deal with Joss Whedon, which included him writing and directing The Avengers sequel and develop a live-action series for Marvel TV and ABC, both owned by Disney.

UPDATE:

Joss Whedon, who appeared Tuesday night at the Writers Guild Theater as moderator of a Q and A with “Sleepwalk with Me” filmmakers Mike Birbiglia and Ira Glass, said the storyline for the proposed series will be largely “autonomous” from the “Avengers” sequel feature that is also in the works. The series will revolve around the activities of the top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D espionage org featured in “Avengers.”

Thanks to Variety for the update.

Having a superhero movie with a bunch of different heroes trying to save the world is expected to be a difficult thing to do, well look at The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which had bunch of characters forming a team to “save the world”, that is one example of a movie which was not well made or explored, but that is not the case with Marvel’s The Avengers by director Joss Whedon, not at all. Whedon manages to deliver a very well driven movie, with an excellent writing, great dialogues, and great character developments.

You would think that in a movie as big as this one, with so many important characters to share the screen, that some of them would lose their place in the movie, or that one would shine more than the others. Nope, that doesn’t happen here. Whedon manages to introduce each character with a great amount of time, showing us what the characters we already know have been up to recently, and how they will get involved in this new story. We have a villain with a solid plan, is nothing too much hard to believe, or cheesy, he has a purpose, a deal in which he will deliver the Tesseract to the Chitauri if he can get an army with the race to “conquer” the earth. Loki steals the Tesseract from S.H.I.E.L.D., and manages to get The Avengers in a really bad situation by having Dr. Selvig and Clint Barton under mind control.

Like said the story is good, really solid telling and purporse, but what makes the movie good is not only the story, but some great factors I’ve mentioned before. The great writing and dialogue along with characters interactions and development. Each of The Avengers get their own time together, so they can share experiences, like Banner and Stark when they first start working on locating Loki, they have time to have a real good conversation and get to know each other, and they realise that they’re not that different, and they are also not perfect. And the best example of how well done is the script, is the scene in the helicarrier lab where everyone starts arguing, with Tony and Steve facing off their differences and Thor is right in the middle as the indifferent one, who is there to make things more interesting, also a Bruce Banner who is afraid that he is only being used to unleash the beast, and for last a Nick Fury, who is specially worried about “saving the world”, but truly, the team finds out that S.H.I.E.L.D. have their own plans for the Tesseract power, which is what triggers the conflict.

Going more in depth about the dialogues, we have some really well written lines, using some great effect words, specially Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, who has his own time of conversation with each important character of the movie, exploring their minds, and he is not there just as a villain for them to have a physical fight in, but also a villain who provides a mental challenge, someone who will make them think different of things, someone who sometimes may manipulate them.

The movie gives the perfect example of how a team with big names would work, it is not perfect, they have their ego, they will kill each other if they don’t control the situation, the movie is about showing how they can connect, from a team about failures and with no balance, to a team who will stay together and save the day, they show that to be a team you have to learn how to work together, know your allies, and start respecting everyone, and The Avengers perfecty does that, is the kind of superhero movie we have been waiting for so long, the action scenes are also fantastic, with the heroes fighting together or against each other, is a comic book perfectly translated to the screen.

It seems like after Avengers vs. X-Men wraps up we are going to get a lot of new comics coming out. We’ve already learned about Gambit getting his own title, and now coming out of C2E2 is word that Hawkeye will also get a solo book.

Matt Fraction and David Aja, who worked on the highly acclaimed The Immortal Iron Fist, are teaming back up for this project. Comic Book Resources caught up with Fraction and got the full rundown.

This Hawkeye will be slightly different. He will be on the mean streets of New York in a very retro-styled/70s urban grit, but present day setting. Fraction said that you almost expect Hawkeye “to come around the corner and bump into Power Man and Iron Fist from 30 years ago.” Fraction went on to say

I wanted to find a way to stay interested and engaged and thought these types of adventure stories should feel hard-edged, gritty, human — a little bit beaten-down, a little bit weathered. No sheen like in “Avengers Assemble,” no special effects like in “Secret Avengers.” Hawkeye will be out of costume as much as he’s in costume. This isn’t a book about being a super hero. It’s about being a good guy and, hopefully, a good man. This is what he has to do to tolerate who he is. It’s what he does when he’s not an Avenger. Gifted people helping out because it’s the right thing to do.

Hawkeye won’t be facing all of this alone. He will be bringing along the other Hawkeye, Kate Bishop from the Young Avengers. Below are the covers for issues one and two. Well it just wrapped up, and if you’re a few days behind I won’t mention the ending specifically.

The ending left things open if Marvel decided to use Kassady again. In the letter column in fact, they said the murderous symbiote would return in minimum carnage.

Coming out of C2E2 today is this teaser image of the previously mentioned follow-up. No further information at this time, but as C2E2 continues I’m sure this and other exciting info will spill out.

Marvel’s Agent M tweeted the teaser, and Marvel.com has the following:

Moviezine has gotten their hands on several new stills from Marvel’s The Avengers. In the images below, you can see pretty much all the heavy hitters are represented. Captain America seems to be taking the spotlight with several great shots, specifically the silhouette shot on top of a car. You can see Dr. Banner working on some sort of machine, probably related to the cosmic cube if I had to guess. Moviezine has a great gallery of the new images and a collection of some we have previously seen. If you want to see the full set, click here.

Here’s the official Marvel synopsis

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble in summer 2012. In “Marvel’s The Avengers,” superheroes team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.

The countdown continues, the American release is May 4th. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ll be camping outside the theater.
