We’ve got two previews for some new books hitting comic book stories January 23rd. Our double preview page features the debut of Young Avengers and the follow-up of sorts to Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe.

Young Avengers debuts featuring a new team. The crew includes Wiccan, Hulkling, Hawkeye, Loki, Marvel Boy, and Ms. America. Kieron Gillen writes the series and Jamie McKelvie and Mike Norton provide art.

Also kicking off is a new Deadpool miniseries that follows hot on the heels of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe. Cullen Bunn returns to guide Deadpool in his journey to destroy all of fictions most popular characters. First up- Moby Dick! The series features art by Matteo Lolli and Sean Parsons. Check out the solicit info and preview pages below!

Legacy isn’t a dirty word… but it’s an irrelevant one. It’s not important what our parents did. It matters what WE do. Someone has to save the world. You’re someone. Do the math. The critically acclaimed team of Gillen/McKelvie/Wilson (with added Norton Sauce) decide to reinvent the teen superhero comic for the 21st century, uniting Wiccan, Hulkling and Hawkeye with Loki, Marvel Boy and Ms. America. No pressure. Young Avengers is as NOW! as the air in your lungs, and twice as vital. It’s the book that knows Hyperbole is the BEST! THING! EVER!

If you’ve been keeping up with Scott Snyder’s Twitter page, you know the writer has declared war on horses by abusing his powers as Batman head writer. The scribe has killed a total of three horses in the pages of his Death of the Family arc, and countless others which were probably graciously cut by DC’s editorial staff. Mr. Snyder has had The Joker shoot a horse in the face in a backup story, set a horse ablaze to run down the halls of Arkham Asylum, and finally had Mr. Freeze freeze and then punch a horse into little horse bits. This man has repeatedly dodged questions on Twitter as to why he hates horses so much. He has flippantly stated the following:

A horse shot my parents in an alley when i was a young boy. RT @shaunh22: @ssnyder1835 Why don’t you like horses?

— Scott Snyder (@Ssnyder1835) January 16, 2013

A horse shot my Uncle Ben. RT @juventuz: @ssnyder1835 Read Batman 16 finally, you got something against horses? — Scott Snyder (@Ssnyder1835) January 17, 2013

As a boy, I thought a horse killed my father. He was my father RT @broughstuff: Batman #16 was awesome, but what’s snyder got against horses — Scott Snyder (@Ssnyder1835) January 17, 2013

I hate horses.
Mr. Snyder continues to avoid answering the hard hitting question of why he dislikes horses. The writer seems to have a personal vendetta against our equine friends. Where does this deep-seated hatred come from? One could not venture to guess, but we have obtained this footage of someone taking their hatred from the land of fantasy to the reality. Is that Scott Snyder punching a horse in the face? It’s not for us to say, but it does look like him doesn’t it?

GIFSoup

Mr. Snyder continues to taunt fans about horse hatred. Earlier today he sent out the link to the following Amazon review [click to see larger image] through is personal Twitter. This man must be stopped before more fictional horses are destroyed. I propose a petition to prevent Mr. Snyder from ever writing a My Little Pony book. Just think what he would do to them?! *if you can’t tell, this is an article in the style of The Onion making fun of the supposed horse controversy and the gif is from Blazing Saddles.

Welcome to Indie Spotlight! The independent scene is filled with many writers and artists alike and we here at Comic Book Therapy wanted to explore and reach reach out to these talented people to have the opportunity to learn about their works. For our first edition we present to you Yumi Sakugawa!

I am Yumi Sakugawa and I am a comic book artist and illustrator based in the Southern California. I am a regular comic / illustrator online contributor to Sadie Magazine and Wonderhowto.

Most recently, my comic zine “Mundane Fortunes for the Next Ten Billion Years and Other Stories” was selected as Notable Comics of 2012 by the Best American Comics anthology editors.

_____________________________________________________

Comic Book Therapy – Thank you very much for taking the time out to do this interview. How have you been doing?

Yumi Sakugawa – It is my pleasure! I’m finally fully recovered from a week-long cold so right now I am feeling pretty amazing.

CBT – You’re a self published comic book artist. How did you start?

Yumi – After I graduated from UCLA, I spent a year teaching English in Japan… because that’s what you do when you have just graduated from college with an art major and you have no idea what you’re going to do with yourself. During that time, a fellow English-teaching American artist friend and I spontaneously decided to sign up for a small booth at the bi-annual Tokyo Design Festa, a giant arts and craft convention that happens in Tokyo every May and November. I didn’t have any art on hand and I definitely did not want to show up as a first-time exhibitor empty-handed–so I furiously whipped up my first self-published 30-page comic zine “Milk and Moo” just in time for the event. Note to new artists, there is nothing like a convention deadline to really force yourself to kick your own butt to get something done.

This was back in 2008, and I had no idea that a zine culture even existed. When I moved back to Los Angeles, I made serendipitous connections with fellow artists in 2010 who introduced me to the zine scene and really got me hooked to showing comic zines at zine conventions.

CBT – What projects have you completed? Currently working on?

Yumi – I’ve self-published about eight comic zines in the last four years, ranging from illustrated guides on meditation to short comic story collections. My most recent self-published comic zine was a 50-page autobiographical diary comic of my travels in Paris and Rome.

Things I’m currently working on? I’ll definitely be releasing more self-published comics about meditation and mindfulness (people seem to really like those), and more short comic story collections. And since the world always needs more self-love and creative inspiration, I’m thinking of releasing a comic zine that deals specifically with self-love and staying inspired as an artist.

I’m also working on a longer fictional comic project right now, longer than anything I have ever made. It’s kind of a secret so either a lot of people will get to read it once it’s done or I won’t finish it and no one will ever know about it. Hopefully it will be the former and not the latter.

CBT – How long have you been in the art world? What inspired you to pick up the pencil/pen and create?

Yumi – I honestly don’t know what counts as being in the art world! I was in my first group art show in 2008 that wasn’t an art school student campus gallery show, so maybe since then? As for what inspired me to pick up the pencil / pen and create, I’ve always been drawing and doodling since I was a small kid, and drawing is the perfect medium to express yourself when you’re a really painfully shy kid and you’re trrified of talking to people.

CBT – As an artist, conventions and other means of showcasing are pretty important to promote your work. Have you attended conventions?

Yumi – Yes! I’ve attended maybe 6 different comic and zine conventions in the last few years and I really love the convention scene. For 2013, I’m really excited that I will be tabling away from the West Coast for the first time ever–at the Brooklyn Zine Fest in April and at the Toronto Comics and Arts Festival in May. Come visit my table if you think you’ll be going to either of those events!

I always make the coolest new friends and discover amazing new artists at every convention event. Seriously, I feel like there is a significantly lower percentage of douchey, pretentious creative types in the zine scene compared to other creative scenes or maybe I have just been really lucky with the people I’ve met. That, and I love having the opportunity to share my work with new people and connect in real-time with people who have seen my work previously on the internet or elsewhere.

If you are just starting out as a comic book artist, then I really recommend signing up for a table or a booth at a comic convention. Even if you don’t sell that many comics in the beginning, you get so much from the whole experience.

CBT – What is your best Convention memory?

Yumi – I think my best convention memory is the first comic and zine convention I’ve ever attended in 2010. I was crammed in one car with three other zine friends and left at 3 in the morning from Los Angeles to arrive just in time in Sacramento at around 10 A.M. to table at Indy Euphoria. I was only there for one day and I hitched a ride back to Los Angeles with another friend that same night. That convention memory is particularly special to me because that was the first time I had the chance to meet Dylan Williams, the late founder of Sparkplug Comic Books. It was at the convention when he actually bought copies of my first comic zine from me to distribute through Sparkplug and as a total newbie, I was so blown away by the possibility that complete strangers would really take a genuine interest in reading my comics. I feel so fortunate to have met him at that time and one more time before his unfortunate passing in 2011.

CBT – Things can be a bit difficult getting into the comic business. What encourages you to continue?

Yumi – I honestly don’t think much about the difficulty of getting into the comic business. Not because I naively think it won’t be difficult for me or anything like that, more so because I’m much more preoccupied on a narcissistic, mundane level with the daily difficulty of motivating myself every single day to find the time and the inspiration to move forward with my comic projects, regardless of busyness or creative blocks.

What keeps me going? Fan mail from an eleven-year-old girl. Complete strangers from countries I’ve never visited ordering my zines online. Seeing my self-published comics on display in my favorite independent bookstores. Kind messages from strangers. The painstakingly slow progress I make as an artist with every new project I finish. Being held accountable to my inner eleven-year-old who always dreamed of becoming a cartoonist.

CBT – Have you done work for other publishers?

Yumi – I’m actually working on something with another comic publisher. I can’t disclose too much information for the moment and more details will be revealed later in 2013. Stay tuned!

CBT – What do you enjoy most about doing comics?

Yumi – I think comics is the best creative medium for me to fully and honestly express myself as an artist and as a human being. Growing up, I was always torn between wanting to become a writer and wanting to become an artist; thankfully with comics, you can do both things at the same time.

CBT – With the year of rebirths and reboots, do you feel it contributes well to the comic business or takes the interest away from longtime readers?

Yumi – I’m the worst person to ask this question. I haven’t actually read any rebirth or reboot comic storylines.

CBT – Who is your favorite comic book artist? Favorite title or series that features his/her art?

Yumi – What a difficult question! I have many favorite comic book artists that changes with what I am interested in at the moment, but I always find myself revisiting again and again “Skim” illustrated by Jillian Tamaki and written by Mariko Tamaki. Coming-of-age stories with interesting female teenage protagonists are my personal catnip.

CBT – What comic book character would you find easy to relate to?

Yumi – This is a Japanese manga character, but I can relate too well with Maruko from the shoujo manga series “Chibi Maruko-Chan.” She’s lazy and disorganized, and prone to retreating to her own imaginary world a lot, just like me. (I can’t relate, however, to her immense dislike of nattou)

As for an American comic book character, this may be an extreme cliche answer but I think Charlie Brown and I would have had a lot of great coffee hang-outs. I was a pretty melancholy kid prone to over-nostalgizing my own childhood experiences in my head as they were happening in real time.

CBT – What would you consider your greatest piece to date?

Yumi – I don’t know if this would be my greatest, but I will always have a huge fondness for my first self-published comic story “Milk and Moo.” There is a wonderful magic that comes out of having no idea what you’re doing but somehow getting it done anyway.

CBT – For those who want to have a start in illustration, what advice would you share with them?

Yumi – Give the world as many opportunities as possible to see your artwork. Have a regularly updated art blog. Show your work at shows. Exhibit at conventions. Meet other artists. Make friends with artists whose skills and work ethic intimidate the shit out of you. Being an artist can be a lonely business, so find a community of artists you can join or make your own community. Find excuses to get your illustration out there, whether it’s volunteering to illustrate for a someone’s music event flyer or challenging yourself to publishing a weekly web comic with a friend.

In the beginning, all of this may seem like shooting darts in the dark. It is all worth it for the momentum that you create for yourself that will carry you over to your next great opportunity.

CBT – Thank you very much! Is there anything you’d like for us to be on the lookout for?

Yumi – Since so many people have asked about this, I will be releasing a limited artist booklet print of my emo-comic “I Think I Am In Friend-Love with You” sometime this month (January). If you are looking for the perfect not-so-subtle gift to give to your friend-crush for Valentine’s Day, this is it.

Avenging Spider-Man has been in an identity crisis the last couple of issues. It started out as a team up book, and was an old fashioned good time. But suddenly it became a book about helping other books. This month, it’s helping the soon to be launched Captain Marvel book. #8 helped out “Ends of the Earth,” and was a terrible issue. But #9 gets it right, and is a great issue.

Kelly Sue DeConnick (the writer of Captain Marvel) writes this issue, and she writes it perfectly. The reader gets an understanding of how she is going to write Carol Danvers, and why we will want to read her book. Carol is a strong person, who isn’t afraid to think instead of punch. She has always been like this, but somehow this got lost in Brian Reed’s ongoing. Maybe it had to due with the Dark Reign storyline and Moonstone taking over. But DeConnick seems to be embracing this, and going even further with it. Carol seems to be a person who, instead of trying to find what she is best at, is just going along for the ride that is life. She seems more optimistic and in command of her life. Long time fans of Carol Danvers will love the way DeConnick writes her.

The story itself is interesting. It revolves around an “Occupy Wall St.” protester (or something along those lines) stealing money. The interaction between Spider-Man and Danvers is hysterical, and shows how well these characters work together. DeConnick has said these two won’t be getting back together, so don’t look for that in the new book. Spider-Man is funny, but never self referential. Robyn Hood seems more of a plot point than an actual villain, but DeConnick makes the most of her. She puts a “y” in Robyn Hood, because there is no “y” in “freedom.” Yeah, it’s that cheesy. But the controversial topic about budget cuts and things like that are handled well. DeConnick ups the ante by the end of the issue, which is good considering readers will want more of this team by the end of the issue. Boston is used heavily, but not used as well as it could have been. Not a big deal, but something someone like me, who is from Boston, looks for.

The Dodsons, Terry and Rachel, pencil a great issue. Their work on Defenders was good, but it seemed rushed in some spots. Avenging Spider-Man #9 doesn’t seem rushed, and one of their better issues in the past year. Carol’s new costume looks great, and doesn’t seem cheesy (which it does in some of the promotional materials). The Dodsons have always penciled Spider-Man well, and that continues here. Every character, even when they are only specks on the panel, have great expressions that grasp the reader. There is a double page spread that doesn’t move, but is broken up into smaller panels. It gives the page a sense of movement, and the Dodsons pull it off in a great way. The Dodsons seems to be a team who needs plenty of time to pencil an issue. With Marvel NOW! starting up in a few months, maybe one of those books could be bimonthly, which would give them plenty of time to pencil each issue.

Avenging Spider-Man is a book that needs to have a constant creative team. I long for the days when Zeb Wells wrote this book. The team up genre is one that can be fun, but constantly changing up the creative team is going to create a sense of unevenness. Unless Zeb Wells is going to be on one of the Marvel NOW! books, I’d really love for him to come back. He is one of the best Spider-Man writers right now, and deserves to be writing the character more regularly.

Avenging Spider-Man #9 gets 4/5.

Again, these are POSSIBLE SPOILERS and they are not confirmed yet. To be honest with you I am kind of disappointed if some of these turn out to be true… We will have to wait and see.

Ok well, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

HIGHLIGHT TO READ

Who dies: Lucius,, Bane, henchmen, many other people, bad guys, good guys, rich guys, etc.

Who lives: Batman, Alfred, Gordon, Blake, Selina, Miranda………

Bane: bad ass, protege of Ras, friend to Talia AKA Miranda. Set this plan in action YEARS ago, and slowly built up the League again, while getting everything in place for this invasion. Known around the international intelligence community. VERY Brutal, very scary, but not seemingly crazy, in the sense that he always seems to be in control and steps ahead. Parents were killed when was a kid and he was raised and schooled by Ras who was very impressed with him, had a brief relationship with Talia, but after the accident he suffers while older he shuns her advances, due to his mask and his new found MINOR deformity. He wears the mask to conceal his pain, and because of a neurological disorder that makes it hard for him to control his body. This affects his adrenal levels as well. He is not THE leader of the league, but he’s the other half, as Talia is the other part. They disagree at times in particular when he kills ( ), he kills himself when Batman beats him, as he feels for one he has no other choice, and he feels Batman proved it was his victory, so his Ideals will win out.

1st appearance in Gotham is at the stock exchange, second is at the stadium and third is when he returns 6 months later as promised in his speech at the football stadium. That scene he kills the mayor in front of everyone, and tells them to take control of Gotham or he will do it for them. Of course Gotham sinks into hell after Gordons absences, Batmans disapearance, and everything he did to that point, so he comes back, to finish the job as promised. This part of the story takes over half the movie and there is A LOT THAT Happens.

Catwoman AKA Selina:

Thief, part of the group in Gotham that is recruited to make things happen for when the League shows up. Responsible for a string of thefts, that seems centered on the rich. She is first seen in Waynes mansion as a maid whom Bruce catches stealing from him. She gets away, and they again meet at a charity ball in gotham he attendss with Miranda. He goes to confront her and they dance, and then soon after she steals his car. Bruce is somewhat amused as he understood why she was saying she was adaptable when he said her dress was brazen for a burglar. As she didn’t need to wear anything special to pretend to be his wife and steal his car.

She switches sides for a few reasons. One she never though Bane would take it as far as he did, She was SHOCKED when she learned Batman was in fact Bruce Wayne, and 3 her friend(played by Juno Temple) is someone she cares about and she fears what will happen to her and others like her should Bane continue and finish his plan. Much of which was not explained to her and others. She joines Batman, fights Talia, good fight, and remains the regular ol’ catwoman in the end. Not good, not bad, just mischiveous and apart fo gotham lore. She does have a scene with Bruce in the end, as he and her stand in front of his parents graves talking about the future.

BATMAN: LIVES, and does in fact get broke in the first fight with Bane. Catwoman lured him to where Bane wanted him and closed the gate. But before we get there too far, let’s discuss Bruce.
Bruce has taken full time to watch over Wayne Industries with the help of Talia and Fox, they have made it bigger and more influential than ever. He’s seen as a rich snob, who is no better than any other rich snob by most in Gotham, Even though he dwells into much more research, development, and philanthropy than others.
Anyways, his cane use is what we think from TDK. We come to find out he doesn’t really need it though, and he uses it as a reason/excuse as to why he can’t be Batman anymore, one of many. But we find out just before the 1st bane fight and during his talk with Gordon in the hospital, that he’s not as hurt as he lets on, though he isn’t in the shape he as in TDK.
Batman after being implored by Gordon, decides that he must put on the mask once again. He eventually is led to Banes lair, and fights a few of his men, he then sees Seline and chases her down, to which she lures him to Bane, They fight, and Batman barely even puts up a fight at all, as he seemingly can’t even hurt Bane, if he should even land a punch. Bane breaks his back, via military press and slam over his knee. He then appears ready to snap his neck but instead rips off his mask, and pushes him down. Fight over, Bane has him taken away to imprisonment.

Batman meets up with Dr. taken in prologue, find out about banes mask and such, as well as some of the plan, and some of Banes secrets. Bruce eventually escapes through great effort, and return to gotham. Bruce heals in about 6 months time, and returns to gotham after a great escape and effort to escape the well, somewhat mirroring what happened in BB with his father, except this time he’s the one who must get out himself.
Once out he meets up with Lucius and then Alfred, as well as Selina who was hiding in the mansion after her escape from prison. They team up, and Batman meets up with Gordon on the streets in a very cool scene.

During this time or before if I remember correctly Miranda is revealed, as Talia, as Lucius discovers this and Bane kills him as he come up behind him. This angers Miranda as she liked Fox and regrets that he was killed. This REALLY angers Bruce, though, as he goes to Fox to get some weapons/equipment, and he’s even more mad when he finds out that Miranda was involved. He is not though explained as to who Miranda really is yet, as Talia doesn’t even say what her real name is til close to the end.

Batman though along with his allies, meet bane and co. in battle and push them back to their hideout eventually. Batman and talia have a heart to heart, in between this, and she explains that she is RAs daughter, via flashback, seeing both old and young Ras. You also see this when Bane explains Ras in the prison.

Anyways Batman chases Bane back down to his hideout, and they fight once again, this time, with Batman emerging victor, and Bane conceding the victory, just before removing his own mask, and letting himself die, as he apparently can’t breath properly with out the mask. Miranda has tears for him and for Bruce, as she escapes, presumbably for good.

In the end Batman decides that he will remain as Batman as long as Gotham needs him, especially now that the rebuilding period is sure to bring more hard times, and as Batman is now in the favor of the public, he must continue to do what he can, BECAUSE he can. Alfred agrees and says that BATMAN as a symbol only works because Bruce makes it work, he is perhaps the only one that can make it work.
Alfred speaks with Bruce in the cave about how well he worked with Selina, and perhaps he should find some help that he can trust won’t steal the china from our cabinets. Bruce says he’s not sure he’d have any idea where to even look for someone like that. While Alfred jokes that well it would at least be nice to get some help around the cave as taking care of the mansion and the cave is too much for an old man.

Alfred jokes that maybe bruce can take the night off and take an old man to the circus for a much needed night out. Mentioning the Flying Graysons act is supposed to be quite the show. Bruce tells him he can’t tonight but he will before the circus leaves town or something,… Movie ends with Gordon celebrating the rebuilding of Gotham precinct after Bane blew it up, and once again shines the Bat signal in honor of Batmans efforts. The city applauds and batman looks on, as you get a large view of gotham and the rebuilding efforts, you then from a distance see him swoop down as the camera follows behind him as he does his thing.

MIranda Tate/ Talia: she is in the shadows most of the movie and appears quite a bit in the beginning as Bruces girlfriend, whom they have a passionate relationship with each other. She is one of the reaons Wayne Enterprises is flourishing so well, and is invovled heavily with the company. When Bruce goes missing she assumes control of the board as Fox is busy dealing with ways to find Bruce, and others things.

Unbeknownst to him Talia in her time with the company was using Wayne Ent, to build up the league, with weapons, financing, and to help create the foothold for them once the plan was put into action. She is discovered by Lucius to be the one that helped bane get to the shattering device, as well as many other things. When she is discovered she then shows her true colors, and joines with Bane, after Bane kills Lucius. Sad.

She then reveals who she is to Bruce when they again meet up, and he is shocked that she had the will and fortitude to play it out like she did and for as long as she did. She apparently was with Wayne for awhile. He’s quite saddened and angry about this. But seems to worry more about Bane, and sees her as less of a threat.

She does battle with Selina as batman does battle with Bane. She is found to be VERY formidable as fighter and gives Selina everything she can handle. Before finally being beaten. As Bane loses she regains consciousness to witness it, and is saddened by what she consideres a tragic story in bane. As well as her regret for what she did and her knowing she can never make it right with Bruce, she leaves/escapes, with the implication she WILL NOT return.

John Blake: does not take up the mantle of batman at all. If anything he takes over for Gordon for awhile and is just a good cop that helps in the effort to quell Banes forces. He is though integral to the plan as he relays to Gordon that Batman may still be alive, and he also has a big part in helping in the final battle and getting to Banes lair in the end. It is implied that in time he may take over as Commissioner in time, He is though promoted to Lt. in the end. Good guy, he even arrests Selina in the first half though she escapes as said before.

Gordon: Typical Gordon, does this job, helps lead the way, but gets messed up early in the film in an altercation with Banes and his men, he pleas with the masked man that visit him in the hospital to return as Batman, before passing out. Then when he heals, he is somewhat powerless to do anything as everyone is afraid to engage Bane as he warned he would cause havoc should they try and come after him, ala, earthquake to city with his machine. Gordon though is happy to find that Batman has returned and then along with Blake convince the police that they have to fight back once the city is barricaded and the bridges are blown.

Tidibts: Banes mask comes off only when he takes it off. He seems to not sleep with it on, and uses a sort of respirator that isn’t so uncomfortable. The other time he takes it off is when he loses to Batman, and concedes defeat. A sort of honorable gesture on his part actually, as he agrees that he has lost and Batman has earned his right to do it his way. Both fights with Batman, actually 3, of them, are all pretty nasty and brutal. Bane is clearly Bruces equal. But his story is similiar to Bruces, and perhaps worse as he didn’t grow up with wealth like Bruce did, and lived a very hard life. He’s very scary, and it’s hard to watch him sometimes as you are sure he’s about to F someone up at anytime and quite brutally at that. Plus his plan is VERY big in scope and surefire, YES HE does have a bullet proof vest, as do certain members of his crew, making it hard to have a gun fight with them. They have about 3-4 tumblers and are quite well armed and trained, ala, league style.

Miranda seems to be the TRUE leader of the league, though Bane commands just as much respect. Bane is very loyal though, and mentions her father many tims throughout the movie to her and Batman.

Selina, is very wishy washy as loyalties go, but it’s clear she’s not a bad person. Just a bit of a deviant. She makes it clear that playing good isn’t going to be the lifetime choice she’ll make.
She has a best friend who is younger and she apparently cares for. She LOVES stealing is is very good at it, and she has a stockpile hidden in her place. She hid in Waynes mansions when she escaped from Jail to hide from the police AND Bane, only to be discovered with Bruce returns.

The movie has a more comic book feel to it then TDK did, and is more along the lines of of BB.

Part 1: Beat the Poet

Writer: Matt Kindt

Art: Alberto Ponticelli

Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E #10 welcomes new writer Matt Kindt who is filling in for Jeff Lemire since he stepped down to take over Justice League Dark (issue #9 was amazing!), however for some odd reason Lemire’s name is still on the cover? I wouldn’t worry though Mindt brings his A-game with all the fun wild craziness Frankenstein has to offer.

Kindt gets the ball rolling quick. Things start off in the library when all of sudden Frankenstein is attacked by ninja bug creatures, which are hard to kill according to the S.H.A.D.E database, but nothing is a match for Frankenstein! From this point he must assemble his finest men and travel to an upside down city and track down a S.H.A.D.E agent who went rogue. We are then believed to think that the rogue agent might have something to do with the attack back at the S.H.A.D.E library. When all things are said and done there is a twist at the end and Frankenstein might have been left for dead!? This isn’t the best issue I have read, but new writer Kindt serves up a good story and I can’t wait for the following issue.

Ultimately Alberto Ponticelli’s art is worth the $2.99 price tag for me. I love all the sci-fi action, characters facial expressions, and cloud traveling (with cloud jets!).I first heard about Ponticelli in 2011 when he was drawing IDW’s Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliath mini-series, which I absolutely loved. Seeing these larger than life monsters come to life and destroying Tokyo really made me admire him as a artist, also John Layman (Chew) writing it made me love this series even more. Regardless, if you like Ponticelli art definitely check out IDW’s Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliath mini-series.

Rating: 3/5

For those of you who haven’t been reading DC’s New 52 Batman (Seriously?!) they combined top dog writer Scott Snyder,Greg Capullo killing it on art, master inkier Jonathan Glapion, and colors by the extraordinary FCO Plascencia with that you get TEAM BATMAN!

Lets say you have been living under a rock for the last ten months and need a quick recap here we go: Since the relaunch we’ve seen Bruce Wayne dealing with a hidden mystery within Gotham city. He once thought that he knew everything about Gotham City but soon discovers a secret organization with massive power and networking within the heart of gotham called The Court of Owls. The court stemmed from an old nursery rhyme and when his parents were killed he believed the court had something to do with it. Young detective wayne actually started investigating the court to see if they’re existence was true, but wayne’s investigation lead towards a dead end. Soon to only find out his miscalculation would haunt him later.

Granted that was a quick breakdown and its not including all the fine details that make this batman story arc one of the best, but I hope with that it will crave your appetite to pick this up. Issues #1-9 has been an emotional rollercoaster of awesome. Snyder crafting the story and Capullo perfecting it makes this all the worthy of your pretty penny.

With that said this leads us to issue #10 “Attack on the Court” which is by far the best issue to date. Bruce brings the fight to the court once and for all, but also finding out who the evil kingpin is behind all these shenanigans. We also get a major reveal that I won’t spoil for you but HOLY CRAP BATMAN! (NOT ENOUGH CAPS) what a reveal, all I can say is it’s not what you think. I can not wait till issue #11 when all hell breaks lose and the internet finally implodes.

Lastly we get another beautiful backup story written by Snyder, Co-written by James Tynion IV and Artist Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire). Piecing the backup with the main story really adds fun to overall experience.

Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner’s script, much like Minutemen #1, is very wordy. There are only a few panels that lack words. Most of the dialogue is needed, and well written. But there is one scene in particular, where Laurie is being attacked, that has the lyrics of a song playing in between the grunting. While this could have worked as a parallel to the fight going on, it has little to nothing to do with the fight. The scene actually works better if the reader doesn’t read all the lyrics. Some of the dialogue can also seem a little corny. The story takes place in 1966, but looks and sounds like it’s in the 50′s. Not a huge problem, as the dialogue doesn’t pop up much, but it can leave a more astute reader a tad confused. This story, while about Laurie, is also about Sally. She seems to be an equal lead in this book, as she is mentioned or appears in the same amount of panels. Cooke and Conner gives us little reason to like Sally though. While the book is seen from the perspective of Laurie, a teenage girl with a crush, it would have been nice to see some redeeming qualities. They start to appear at the end, which gives the impression that they will come in future issues of this mini-series. But Cooke and Conner give the reader a great reason to feel for Laurie. They describe her and her mother’s past quickly, efficiently, and in a compelling manner. They even gives small shots into what Laurie is thinking, which really hooks the reader into Laurie’s life. Usually they are one panel cartoons that quickly summarize what she is feeling. Her dialogue feels like a real teenage girl, which can be hard for some male writers.

The majority of that last paragraph was spent saying some bad things, but this series looks to be a great one. A few tweaks and the score would have been a little higher. It would be nice if the two writers could tone down the dialogue in some scenes, and give the reader a reason or two to feel for Sally. We can appreciate her being an over bearing mother, and being gifted with the curse of knowledge, but show us a redeeming quality or two. The way Cooke and Conner seem to be going with the ending, those qualities will no doubt make an appearance and redeem Sally. Watchmen fans will notice quite a few winks and nods to the classic graphic novel. Much like Minutemen, they aren’t blatant or break the flow of the story, but they are subtle.

Amanda Conner’s pencils suit the mixture of 50′s and 60′s motif. She does a great job of changing small things in a characters reaction when something is said, or they are reacting to something. It goes a long way to make these characters not only believable, but actually care for them. Things like Laurie’s eyes when her classmate throws some of her milkshake at her. It really makes the reader feel for Laurie and get inside her head. The quick panels about what she is thinking about are funny, and penciled in more of a cartoony way. Conner sticks to the nine panel page layout, and she uses it masterfully. Many times a scene calls for the panel to say stagnant, letting the reader see the small details change in a scene. Her art is very detailed, and it’s easy to get lost in a scene looking for small easter eggs. While Cooke’s script really got the reader in the mind of teenage girl, Cooner’s art does more so. Two panels in particular capture a crop full of emotions quickly. We are two issues into Before Watchmen, and it’s already safe to say the art is going to be stunning in each issue.

Another issue, another Crimson Corsair back up. The art does look good so far, although I haven’t had a chance to read the two back ups back to back.

Before Watchmen Silk Spectre #1 gets 3.5/5.
