Jason Aaron To Write Thanos Origin Series: Thanos Rising

Marvel released another one of their mysterious teasers last week featuring the word “Born” in purple lettering with the promoted creative team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Simone Bianchi. Speculation ran wild as to what exactly the series would be. Of course some people nailed it and some people guessed some odd, but wrong characters. The series is in fact a Thanos origin miniseries called Thanos Rising. You may remember last year there was a planned origin tale by Joe Keatinge and Richard Elson that was scrapped after solicitations and promos went out. There was no reason given, but this may be it. Marvel ran a Q&A on their website with Aaron and Bianchi about the new series starting in April.

Marvel touts the series as giving readers a “rare glimpse into the ultimate nihilist’s early days on his far-off home planet Titan” and the life events that lead him down his path of cosmic villainy. Aaron promised that the origin story is literally that, starting with the Mad Titan’s birth. The series will have some new characters, but there will be several familiar names including Thanos’ father Mentor and his mother Sui-San. Aaron talked about the question that runs through the series:

Well, that’s really the main question of the book. Who is Thanos? When the book starts, even Thanos doesn’t know the answer to that question. It’s the pursuit of that answer that begins to take him to some very dark places. This is not a super hero story. There are no good guys swooping in to save the day here. This is the origin story of a very bad dude. A cosmic mass murderer.

This past summer I had the opportunity to speak with Jim Starlin about the first proposed Thanos origin story, and he shared his thoughts on that (you can find that here). Starlin laid down a lot of history for his creation, but Aaron will be going through pulling it all together and giving it a slight twist. Aaron is sticking to Starlin’s work and talks about how he will continue on from what has already been written:

Jim Starlin of course had already laid down a lot of the pieces of Thanos’ origin, but they were spread out in several different stories written over the course of several years. THANOS RISING combines all those pieces and also fills in a lot of the cracks. I think it’s true to Starlin’s original ideas for the character, while also expanding on some aspects of the origin, and playing around a bit with the dark romance part of the character’s history.

The series starts in April, but as of now there is no word on how long the miniseries will run. Thanos Rising will serve as an entry points for people who just found out about the Mad Titan through The Avengers, but old fans will also get something out of it. Aaron has been writing some great stuff the past few years with Scalped and his recent Thor, so it will be interesting to see what he brings to Thanos. DC Launches New Websites Plus New Before Watchmen Art

DC is getting ready to launch a whole slew of new websites for DC (of course), Vertigo, and MAD Magazine. The DCComics.com site is still in beta status, but it will “offer fans exclusive new content, integrated community and social media features, and in-depth character franchise pages built around iconic characters.”

The site, along with VertigoComics.com and MADMagazine.com will have a broad range of publishing information and content. Other than the Wikipedia-like features, there will be navigation areas for movies, TV, games, shopping, and community.

Timed to promote the launch, DC has released an exclusive Before Watchmen image illustrated by Lee Bermejo (who will work on the new Rorschach book). It is the first group image of the Before Watchmen characters.

Jason James, Vice President of interactive marketing said “The new sites are a true representation of DC Entertainment, and the depth and scope of our characters and brands across all media. Our goal is to be the one-stop destination for all fans looking for the latest news on comics, TV, games and movies, and a place where fans can engage with us and each other about all things DC Entertainment. Fans should visit DCComics.com daily – we have a lot of surprises in store for them over the next week and beyond.”

Here is the list of features DC has released that will be featured on the new site:

Integrated social media – Social media features include comments powered by Facebook integrated throughout the site and real-time Twitter feeds from fans and comic talent. Additionally, the new “Fans” section lists upcoming events and links to all DC Entertainment social media pages and feeds, making it easy for fans to follow, like, see trending topics and join the conversation.

Breaking news and exclusive content – The sites will strive to be a document of record by regularly featuring exclusive content, focused on comics and beyond. And blogs for DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD will continue on the new sites offering breaking news and updated information.

In-depth character experiences – The “Characters” section offers a relational database giving fans extensive search options to gather information and research comics featuring their favorite characters and talent. Franchise pages have been created for iconic characters such as Batman, Superman and Sandman, so fans can get the latest comics, movies, TV, games and merchandise information in one convenient location.

One-stop shopping – The new sites include many shopping options for comic books (both in print and digital), as well as real-time buying options for fans to easily purchase movies, TV shows and games based on their favorite characters, or find out where to buy offline.

Intuitive navigation and branding – New architecture on each site makes it easy to navigate and find a broad range of information and characters making it accessible to both hard-core and casual fans. DC Entertainment’s new brand identity is also incorporated throughout the sites.

Now, they do have some parts of the site up from what I can tell. It looks pretty nice. The character page is slim, but I’m sure they’ll add more soon. It is pretty neat and some of the stuff sounds interesting. Keep your computer tuned here, if anything else happens in the next while, we’ll keep you updated.
