Cody "The Thorverine" Ferrell, Variant Covers Show An Evolving Ultron

Of course the Batman scribe gave nothing big away, but he did whet fans appetites for the big finale:

I can tell you there are definitely some insane moments in the conclusion and some crazy things happen so, I’ve always been braced for it as something that isn’t designed to just shock for the sake of shocking, but is the culmination of the story in a way that feels organic and surprising. I can’t remember who it was, but I had a teacher that gave me a writing quote when I was a student that said ‘Every ending should be both inevitable and totally surprising,’ and I completely believe that. Hopefully this is an ending that feels organic to the story we’ve been telling, and when you get there you’ll say ‘I can’t believe this just happened,’ and at the same time, you’ll feel that it’s a cumulative, horrible thing out of everything that’s been going on.

It’s hard to imagine with a title like Death of the Family that everyone is going to make it out in one piece. While the story won’t conclude the Batman line, it does have some parallels to Dan Slott’s Spider-Man #700. Snyder recalls joking about the conclusion with his friend Slott:

I was actually joking on the phone with Dan Slott after “Spider-Man” #700. I was telling him how I felt so bad because it sounded like things got crazy for him, and he said, “Wait until you get to ‘Batman’ #17! You’ll have the same.” So honestly, maybe I will go be in a bunker somewhere the day that issue comes out. But I believe in the ending very strongly. I believe in the story beat we’re headed towards.

Two pages of Greg Capullo’s art have also been released to hype up the highly anticipated finale. Issue #16 was an absolute treat. The two page spread featuring the “throne room” was stunning. What do you think will happen in the final pages of Death of the Family?

The first film did well, but only later did it gain its cult following. When asked if he was surprised by this, Boxleitner talked about how he gets asked about Tron more than anything at conventions he attends. He says Tron just came along at the right time:

With the things that you do, you wonder if anything resonates, and TRON did. I think TRON came along at a time just before all of this gadgetry that we have now. In its own naive, sweet way, it predicted a world unlike a lot of science fiction that took us places we would never actually experience. We’re actually experiencing some aspects of the original TRON story, with technology and video games. We had these big wall-size arcade games. TRON reflects the age of information that it was predicting.

Boxleitner thought an animated series was a fitting next step for Tron:

Our animated series is just another great venue for the TRON mythology. It speaks to it, right away. An animated series makes sense. And now, TRON fans can also get their fix, every week, for awhile. It fits in very nicely with the mythology that we’ve set up already because it falls between the films. I think it’s fun.

Boxleitner has stuck with Tron every step of the way, from film to television screen. Boxleitner touched on his decision to stay with Tron all the way:

I decided, way back, that I embodied this character, in the first place, so I’m going to be the only one that plays him. That’s it. I didn’t know this animated series was coming. I never saw any of this coming. It was just a job. I’m sure Jeff [Bridges] is as amazed.

The Tron: Uprising cartoon is visually amazing and the voice cast is just as great. Besides Boxleitner and Elijah Wood, you have Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage), and Reginald VelJohnson (Family Matters and Die Hard). Disney XD has put the prequel episode for the new Tron series out on their Youtube channel ahead of its June 7th Premier. The series takes place between the original movie and the 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy. This cartoon, called Tron: Uprising, features the voice talents of Elijah Wood, Bruce Boxleitner (the original Tron), Mandy Moore, and Pee-Wee Herman himself- Paul Reubens among others. Here is the official synopsis. Tron: Uprising premieres June 7 9/8c on Disney XD.

Beck is a young mechanic living in Argon City, a growing metropolis in a far off corner of the grid that has just been occupied by General Tesler, a henchman of the notorious Clu. After his best friend Bodhi is ruthlessly derezzed by Clu’s army, Beck seeks justice for his lost friend and launches a crusade against the regime. His rebellion captures the attention of Tron, the greatest warrior The Grid has ever known, who sees the potential in Beck and trains him to be his successor. Labeled with the moniker of The Renegade, Beck sparks a revolution to fight for the freedom of The Grid.
