We’ve got two previews for some new books hitting comic book stories January 23rd. Our double preview page features the debut of Young Avengers and the follow-up of sorts to Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe.

Young Avengers debuts featuring a new team. The crew includes Wiccan, Hulkling, Hawkeye, Loki, Marvel Boy, and Ms. America. Kieron Gillen writes the series and Jamie McKelvie and Mike Norton provide art.

Also kicking off is a new Deadpool miniseries that follows hot on the heels of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe. Cullen Bunn returns to guide Deadpool in his journey to destroy all of fictions most popular characters. First up- Moby Dick! The series features art by Matteo Lolli and Sean Parsons. Check out the solicit info and preview pages below!

Legacy isn’t a dirty word… but it’s an irrelevant one. It’s not important what our parents did. It matters what WE do. Someone has to save the world. You’re someone. Do the math. The critically acclaimed team of Gillen/McKelvie/Wilson (with added Norton Sauce) decide to reinvent the teen superhero comic for the 21st century, uniting Wiccan, Hulkling and Hawkeye with Loki, Marvel Boy and Ms. America. No pressure. Young Avengers is as NOW! as the air in your lungs, and twice as vital. It’s the book that knows Hyperbole is the BEST! THING! EVER!

• He isn’t through.

Fans have been begging for a sequel since the films initial release to no avail. While no sequel is in sight, the director did show off an unused poster by Robert McGinnis. The poster was painted by McGinnis known for his James Bond posters among other works. We can all look at this poster and think about what could have been.

Update: We have a few new character pics for the game including Hulk, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Deadpool and an image that teases the inclusion of Sandman. Check those out below.

We also have some details on characters who are very likely to show up in the game. The list includes: The Thing, Juggernaut, Sandman, Green Goblin in a OsCorp Tower level, and Magneto.

Traveller’s Tale took on the DC universe in Lego Batman 2: Dc Super Heroes, a result of the studio being purchased by Warner Bros. in 2007. Because WB owns DC and the gaming company, many thought a Lego Marvel videogame was all but impossible. The fact TT is working on a new Lego game featuring over 100 Marvel characters came as quite the surprise to fans and the game’s developers alike. In a recent write-up in the newest issue of Game Informer, thanks to our friend Llama for some scans, the company talked on the new project and teased new details for the upcoming game.

Jonathan Smith, TT Games head of production, touched on the seemingly impossible task of WB making a Marvel game:

The experience we’ve had with massive media organizations is that they’re not entirely stocked by bad people. This may come as a shock to people on the internet, but it turns out that big media organizations are capable of making really good decisions with players’ best interests at heart.

The article reveals that the game will feature The Avengers as an important part of the game, but it will work in other characters, factions, and groups inside the Marvel universe. The game’s story will be written by Mark Hoffmeier. The writer is no stranger to big franchises having written some for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and Marvel Super Hero Squad. The story is still under wraps but it appears Loki will reach out to an unnamed villain to create a “bad-guy alliance to defeat the heroes who stand in their way.”

Two of the game’s most unique characters will be Spider-Man and Hulk. The city of New York will be destroyed in part and rebuilt by players, but gamers can cause destruction of their own with Hulk. The game developers had to work a lot of things around the green behemoth who will be a major focus of the game. Objects have to be destroyable and react to Hulk’s hyperstrength. While the Lego game will have the skillset characters of the previous game, Spider-Man seems to be in a class of his own. Instead of having isolated areas for web use like Batman’s grappling hook, the web slinger can use his webs to stick to any surface and swing wherever players want. Spider-Man’s webs can also be used to tie up bad guys and grab/pull objects. The trademark Spider sense is also in the game. According to one developer “Spider-Man is quite possibly the most difficult of the characters we’ve worked on, but he’s becoming the most satisfying from a design perspective.”

You can learn even more about the upcoming Marvel Lego game by picking up the newest issue of Game Informer. It sounds like this will be going well beyond the usually superhero Lego game fare. With the level of detail and free playing ability to Hulk and Spider-Man, it will be exciting to see what they bring for the other 100+ characters. What do you think? Will you be picking this game up?

A new log line for CW’s proposed Wonder Woman origin series called Amazon has emerged in a new issue of Production Weekly (thanks to @_NerdyGeek_ ) listing info on new TV series and movies. The show will features a young Wonder Woman before she dons the bracelets, tiara, and lasso in a new world she doesn’t understand. The CW’s Smallville-esque Wonder Woman series is in active development, and based on a report a few months ago, looking for its leading lady. The log line names the character Iris, but as Geoff Johns stated when the news of the story first hit it’s just a codename to “avoid speculation.” Check out the synopsis that’s dripping with CW-ness and let us know what you think.

Chronicles female superhero’s life as a young Amazonian, before she becomes a warrior princess with super powers. Iris, comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted -and just as often horrified – by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It’s all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling – to her. Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she’s completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what’s on her mind at all times. She’s bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you’re lying to her. And she doesn’t have time or patience for politics or tact because she’s too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer. There are too many sights to see – and things to learn – and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic – and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.

Bruce Rule is a fan of Iron Fist (seriously who isn’t) and he has reviewed amongst other comics, Essential Iron Fist Vol. 1

We are featuring his review here at Comic Book Therapy and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Make sure you leave your comments below.

Essential Iron Fist Volume 1 collects the first four years’ worth of Marvel comics starring the character, who debuted in 1974 during a martial arts craze. The series is mainly known for some of the earliest work by writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne. This book is part of the Marvel Essentials series, which republishes hundreds of pages of comic books in black and white, a great cost savings for comic book fans!

The Long, Strange Journey of Iron Fist

A 1970s Comic Book Character Revisited

Essential Iron Fist collects Marvel Premiere issues 15-25; Iron Fist 1-15; Marvel Team-Up 63-64; and Power Man & Iron Fist 48-50. Iron Fist debuted in Marvel Premiere 15. After issue 25 he graduated to his own comic, which lasted 15 issues. The Marvel Team-Up stories tied up some story lines after the character’s own comic was canceled. Then Iron Fist was injected into another comic that wasn’t selling well, Power Man, to give it a lift. As you may be able to tell from the list Iron Fist was not a huge success story of the 1970s.

Even so, I liked Iron Fist at the time. The stories had some freshness, and John Byrne’s art was very cool. I decided to write this lens to highlight some of the reasons I think any comic book fan would enjoy this collection, which really is a good way to experience the character. The image here is of Iron Fist and Power Man, off the back cover of Essential Iron Fist Volume 1.

Chris Claremont and Misty Knight

The X-Men Writer At His Best

Writer Chris Claremont gained comic-book fame for his 17-year stint writing the X-Men and its companion books, but some of his earliest work was on Iron Fist, starting with Marvel Premiere No. 24. He would develop the character of Iron Fist and the comic’s supporting cast over the next few years, even having Iron Fist’s girlfriend Misty Knight room with the X-Men’s Jean Grey.Over the course of the stories he would have Iron Fist question how to be a hero, asking himself such realistic questions as what does a superhero do with his civilian clothes when he changes into costume. He also was very strong in developing Misty Knight and Colleen Wing over the course of the series, with Misty growing into the role of Iron Fist’s girlfriend in a mature and realistic way over time. Claremont would later gain acclaim for creating strong females in his X-Men stories as well.

John Byrne’s Early Work

Before X-Men There was Iron Fist!

Comic book artist John Byrne, who may be best known for his work on the Uncanny X-Men, had celebrated runs on such comics as Fantastic Four, Captain America, Alpha Flight, the Sensational She-Hulk and many others, as well as a revamped Superman.

But some of this earliest work was on Iron Fist, and it was sensational. I remember being really impressed by the action scenes that seemed to flow so naturally, and I loved the way he drew Captain America in Iron Fist No. 12. In that issue (contained in this Marvel Essential volume) Captain America is built as solidly as a Sherman tank in contrast to Iron Fist, who seems so much more lithe. Getting this book is worthwhile just to enjoy Byrne’s art.

”You Are Iron Fist”

An Experiment in Writing

One of the more interesting things about the early Iron Fist stories is that they were written in the second-person narrative, which is far less common than first person or third person. From the first page of his debut (see accompanying illustration, taken from this Marvel Essential volume) through most of the stories in this volume the captions are addressed to Iron Fist.

“You are Iron Fist. You stand tensely…” his premiere appearance begins. It was an intriguing approach, and while I had seen it done in some one-shot stories, mainly in horror and war comics, I don’t remember it being very common among superhero stories in the 1970s. Something to keep in mind when you read the stories.

The Marvel Essential Series

The Marvel Essential series reprints many of Marvel Comics’ stories from the 1960s on in large volumes that usually top several hundred pages. The series began in 1997 with the publication of the Essential X-Men No. 1 and The Essential Spider-Man No. 1.

Many of the volumes have been printed more than once, with different covers on some of them, so don’t let that throw you off when buying. Carefully check to make sure which volume number you are considering.

The huge advantage to these volumes is cost: a reader can get 30 or more stories for about what a half dozen new comic books cost, and the old stories have more pages of action per issue. The Essentials books are much more cost-effective than buying all the original comics as well.

Are Marvel Essential Worthwhile?

Some say the Essential series is a great way for fans to read all their favorite series without having to scout down the old comics and spend a great deal of money. Others say the books just aren’t worthwhile because the reprints are in black & white and losing the original colors of the art makes everything look drab. I agree the colors are a major part of enjoying a comic, but I do think the Essentials books are a great deal. I no longer have to go through my collection and pull the original comic out of its protective bag to enjoy an old story. Now, they can sit in a handy volume on my bookcase for me to dip into whenever I want!

The second wave of DC’s new titles has started, offering up a diverse amount of new titles to their young universe. One of the most interesting titles in that new batch is Dial H. Dial H #1 is a very interesting start to a new series.

I’ll admit before I go on, that I have never read anything by China Mieville before. But the premise has me hooked. The idea that this very un-hero like person could be a bunch of different heroes is a unique one. Mieville starts the book with numerous pages of dialogue, and gives the reader a good handle on Nelse and Darren are, and their relationship. They are relatable, if not overly sympathetic. Nelse can be kind of a douche, but this issue seems to hint that he will become heroic as the story goes along. Like any good #1, Dial H #1 sets up a lot of questions for readers to ponder each month. None of them are all encompassing and need to remain a secret, as most of them will be answered as time goes on. Also like any good #1, it gets you hooked. Mieville has set up this little part of the DC universe well. By the end of the issue, the reader has a firm grasp on who the main characters are, and who will be the side players. There is even hint of a romantic relationship. If this series does stay around, it’s going to very unique, as we have a very out of shape hero. Much like the rest of this book, it sticks to super hero tropes while also shaking them up a little.

On the super hero side of the things, there are plenty of questions as to what is going on. As stated before, it’s an interesting set up with plenty of longevity for stories. Much like Locke & Key, a reader will be trying to remember all the combinations of calls and what they turn our hero into. The two heroes that come out of the phone booth aren’t exactly original, but they are interesting. They fit the situations and don’t overstay their welcome. It’s clear the real hero of this book is Nelse, and that the super heroics are going to be a side plot. This is going to work in the book’s favor in the long run, as succumbing to super heroics won’t separate it from the rest of the DC bunch much. Mieville seems to have plenty of ideas ready for potential super heroes. Overall, Mieville has set up a nice little book.

Much like Mieville, I’m not familiar with Mateus Santolouco’s work. But I’d like to be now. His pencils fit every scene without missing a beat. The Boy Chimney scene is chaotic and crazy, fitting how Nelse’s mind is feeling while all of this happens to him. The panel structure rivals Swamp Thing for originality, and the pages are very easy to read. And the second Nelse is back to his normal self, so are the panels. It really helps to set the atmosphere for the book. Boy Chimney also has some great design, being something that the reader can’t’ stop looking at because he’s interesting, but also very creepy. Captain Lachrymose doesn’t get as many interesting panels, but his super hero look is still interesting.

Dial H #1 is off to a good start, and fans looking for something different in their super hero books should give it a shot.

Dial H #1 gets 4/5.

What if superheroes were real? And what if one day they all disappeared? In DANGER CLUB, a new Image Comics series by Landry Walker and Eric Jones, the fate of the world is in the hands of the allies that the heroes left behind — their teenage sidekicks

Agent Burgos, THE KIDS ARE ALL FIGHT

Sidekicks get their turn in Danger Club from Image Comics!

It’s up to the this rag-tag and fragmented group to battle the immense cosmic evil that threatens the world. But the fight could be over before it even starts if the sidekicks’ struggle for dominance destroys them from the inside.

“Eric and I wanted to take they typical assortment of sidekicks and strip them of their authority figures,”

explained Walker.

“These are the most powerful beings on the planet, and the oldest is around sixteen. You take any group of teenagers and put them in a positions of absolute power… there will be some serious consequences. Some will seek to recreate the familiar hierarchy or attempt to establish their dominance while some will some will rise to the occasion.”

Walker and Jones are no strangers to superheroes. However, the creative team behind Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, still feel like they’ve undertaken something new.

“The flexibility of working within our own superhero universe has been a rewarding experience,”

said Walker.

“It’s a very different animal — independent creation versus working within corporate-owned playgrounds — and it’s allowing Eric and I to show sides of our work that we really haven’t been given an opportunity to expose while working under a corporate umbrella. We’ve kind of gotten a label as ‘all-ages’ creators. That’s not all we are. Fortunately, Image has given us an opportunity to show our range and diversity.”

DANGER CLUB #1 will be in stores and digital platforms on April 4 and is available for preorder in the February issue of Previews (FEB120420). A three-page preview appears in INVINCIBLE #89, in stores on February 29.

Image has immediately gone back to press and a second printing of GLORY #23 (DEC118223), with a new cover by Ross Campbell, will be in stores on the same day as GLORY #24, March 14.

GLORY #23 marks writer Joe Keatinge’s and artist Ross Campbell’s bold revival of the Rob Liefeld-created superheroine. Glory has returned to Earth — this time, not to save it but to live as a human among humans. And there are two young women there who have been waiting for her.

Keatinge and Campbell bring a euro-comic-meets-indie sensibility to the superhero comic. This sensibility is most visible in the art by Campbell, who is known for his realistic and varied depictions of women in his books Wet Moon and Shadoweyes, but also present in the inclusion of new characters Riley and Gloria, through whom the reader gets to know the god-like warrior princess.

“Seeing such a different take on the superhero genre succeed has me thrilled,”

said writer Keatinge.

“Glory is an atypical heroine and I’m very thankful there’s such demand to see what we do with her.”

There has been a wonderful trend of mainstream authors writing in the comics world. In this book subtitled Liberty Vocational Volume 1, Naomi Novik author of the wonderful Temeraire series tries her hand at superheroes.

This book is Manga format black and white, but reads in the western left to right format. We are introduced to Liberty Vocation a private college raising the next generation of Super Heroes and possibly a few hidden villains?

Sixteen year old Leah Taymore is a powerful atom manipulator and academic prodigy that has been gifted with a full scholarship and early admission to Liberty Vocation. Things how ever quickly go wrong. She misses an important meeting and bungles a training exercise, she floods her entire dormitory and destroys a tree that injures her roommate and only friend. The villain in the story is revealed to the reader quite early in the book which increases sympathetic feelings towards Leah.

Over all the story was enjoyable but for the price point I’m not sure I’ll pick up further volumes. The story is interesting and I do always enjoy female centered books but I found it a bit lacking. It would definitely be a great read for teen girls .

From the Diamond Preview Catalog’s solicitation copy:

“Moonstone Modern Myths: BLACKEST TERROR #1 (C: 0-1-0)

(W) Eric M Esquivel (A) Ander Sarabia Order Code: AUG111128

The Blackest Terror is a pioneer in what sociologists have dubbed

“the super hero subculture,” a collection of racial and social minorities who feel underserved by

the mainstream legal system and have decided to take matters into their own costumed hands.

How will the world react to these benevolent outlaws? Will they become celebrated symbols of humankind’s capacity for good or hated catalysts of a bloody revolution?”

Blackest Terror is the first in a series of five self-contained one-shots from Moonstone Books written by Eric M. Esquivel & drawn by Ander Sarabia which reinterpret “Golden Age“, public domain characters for the modern era.

It arrives in comic book stores nationwide October 26th, 2011.

The other titles in the series are:

- “Thor: Unkillable Thunder Christ” (the adventure of a pagan pugilist)

- “Super American: The Red, White and Blue Knight” (a multiracial extraterrestrial from America’s distant future)

- “Moon Girl: Princess With a Punch” (A kung fu feminist from another world)

- “Modern Myths: In The Company of Immortals” (In which our heroes trade blows & ideological critiques with their Golden Age counterparts)

I suggest you order this comic, because if you don’t my buddy Eric M. Esquivel will be very sad and you wont ever see him smile like this:
