Hey U Guys caught up with the actor at the Critics Circle Awards in London. After chatting up all Jones has on his plate right now, they asked the big question. You can check it out around the 3:50 mark, but Jones said he will be coming back to Captain America. He seemed very happy about it which is always a good sign. Of course at this stage there are no details on whether it will be in flashbacks or we’ll be seeing his robotic form that was teased in The First Avenger. Whenever more info hits we’ll have it for you. What do you think about Jones’ return? Do you hope he’s more than a scientist this time around?

Mr. Snyder continues to avoid answering the hard hitting question of why he dislikes horses. The writer seems to have a personal vendetta against our equine friends. Where does this deep-seated hatred come from? One could not venture to guess, but we have obtained this footage of someone taking their hatred from the land of fantasy to the reality. Is that Scott Snyder punching a horse in the face? It’s not for us to say, but it does look like him doesn’t it?

Mr. Snyder continues to taunt fans about horse hatred. Earlier today he sent out the link to the following Amazon review [click to see larger image] through is personal Twitter. This man must be stopped before more fictional horses are destroyed. I propose a petition to prevent Mr. Snyder from ever writing a My Little Pony book. Just think what he would do to them?! *if you can’t tell, this is an article in the style of The Onion making fun of the supposed horse controversy and the gif is from Blazing Saddles.

Cody "The Thorverine" Ferrell, Blast From The Past: Marvel Bringing Back The Gold Foil Cover For Age Of Ultron

Marvel touts the series as giving readers a “rare glimpse into the ultimate nihilist’s early days on his far-off home planet Titan” and the life events that lead him down his path of cosmic villainy. Aaron promised that the origin story is literally that, starting with the Mad Titan’s birth. The series will have some new characters, but there will be several familiar names including Thanos’ father Mentor and his mother Sui-San. Aaron talked about the question that runs through the series:

Well, that’s really the main question of the book. Who is Thanos? When the book starts, even Thanos doesn’t know the answer to that question. It’s the pursuit of that answer that begins to take him to some very dark places. This is not a super hero story. There are no good guys swooping in to save the day here. This is the origin story of a very bad dude. A cosmic mass murderer.

This past summer I had the opportunity to speak with Jim Starlin about the first proposed Thanos origin story, and he shared his thoughts on that (you can find that here). Starlin laid down a lot of history for his creation, but Aaron will be going through pulling it all together and giving it a slight twist. Aaron is sticking to Starlin’s work and talks about how he will continue on from what has already been written:

Jim Starlin of course had already laid down a lot of the pieces of Thanos’ origin, but they were spread out in several different stories written over the course of several years. THANOS RISING combines all those pieces and also fills in a lot of the cracks. I think it’s true to Starlin’s original ideas for the character, while also expanding on some aspects of the origin, and playing around a bit with the dark romance part of the character’s history.

The series starts in April, but as of now there is no word on how long the miniseries will run. Thanos Rising will serve as an entry points for people who just found out about the Mad Titan through The Avengers, but old fans will also get something out of it. Aaron has been writing some great stuff the past few years with Scalped and his recent Thor, so it will be interesting to see what he brings to Thanos. • It’s off to Jotunheim, the land of the Frost Giants as Bruce Banner and his lab team embark on an all-new secret mission for S.H.I.E.L.D! Caught trespassing by the local natives, they’re going to need the help of the mighty Avenger, Thor!

Waid is excited to get Simonson on the book and having the legendary artist draw Thor again. While Thor will be showing up, the question should be which Thor is showing up? Waid makes an interesting  statement about the Thor we’ll be seeing:

Why on Earth would you have the amazing Walt Simonson aboard and NOT ask him to draw Thor? The teasing question is–which Thor will we be seeing? Banner and his team of assistants build a portal to Jotunheim, land of the Frost Giants, in order to obtain a rare metal there–but in doing so, they may have accomplished something totally unforeseen!

While we’ll have to wait and see exactly what Waid means, Simonson touched on revisiting the world of Thor and how he goes about tackling the Hulk:

It’s been interesting drawing Thor and not writing him. (laughs) I like what Mark’s been asking me to draw a lot, and he has kindly allowed me to kibitz a little. My earliest work on Thor was done pretty much the same way when I did layouts for Len Wein to write on the Thor title in the 70s. I also got to draw Thor in some of the Brian Bendis Avengers recently. I’ve found it’s been a lot of fun for me to go back and revisit the old boy again.

Regarding the drawing the Hulk and Thor, there’s an essential difference in their natures I try to reflect in the figure work.
I’ve approached drawing the Hulk with a certain ‘wildness’, since he is essentially a ‘monster’ who is the unfettered version of a mortal. The shapes that make up his figure as well as the actual lines used to define those shapes can be far less restrained that they might otherwise be for a more ordinary character. In other words, the drawing technique itself is meant to suggest the limitless quality of the Hulk’s fury and power. And because of his ‘monstrous’ nature, the Hulk’s figure and face don’t require the kind of symmetry that a character like Thor needs in order to be handsome within the context of the comic. I’m also inspired by the earliest versions of the Hulk by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko where there seems to me to have been a nod to the Karloff Frankenstein monster of the early Universal horror films. All of which means I can pack a lot into my drawings to try to capture some reflection of the Hulk’s wild nature.

The artist did some incredibly work with the thunder god back in the day, so having him return to draw again mixed in with it being a Hulk book makes this a must get. Before Watchmen

Darwyn Cook’s story sucks in the reader in the way Watchmen does.  Cook’s dialogue can be a little wordy at some points, but it’s written so well, it’s hard to complain.  Cook spends this first issue describing all the members of the Minutemen and how they came together.  Some do get more than others, with Dollar Bill only getting one page.  But the reader obtains a firm grasp on each character by the end of the issue.  These people are all slightly insane, but they have good intentions.  Except for the Comedian.  The framing device of Hollis Mason writing his own autobiography should suck in the old fans while helping fans understand Nite Owl a little easier.  Cooke never goes into retelling things fans of the book already know.  Retelling classic bits from Watchmen would only harden the opinion of people who said that this event didn’t need to happen.  What Cooke gives is basic enough for new fans to know, but also deep enough into character development that long time fans will still enjoy it.  Knowing how everything turns out adds a bit of despair to a book that feels classic Sliver Age happiness.  By the end of this issue, I already wanted to read #2.

The one thing that this book does perfectly is show that these stories CAN be good.  It’s clear Cooke wanted to write this story, and it wasn’t editorially mandated on him.  It shows respect of the old story, while going deeper into parts that Alan Moore only slightly described.  The best example in this issue is Mothman.  We knew the guy had problems, but we never understood what he was feeling when he was flying, and exactly what others thought of him the entire time.  Most of these characters, although given a basic background in Watchmen, haven’t had the deep character development that they deserve.

Cooke’s artwork is nothing short of beautiful.  Much like the script, his artwork has a Silver Age atmosphere to it, with the characters being simpler in design.  But they are so expressive, and ooze personality, it’s hard to look away.  Cooke even gives a few pages the classic Watchmen nine panel format.  The first few pages are what really draw in the reader though.  The use of circles, with the script describing h0w Mason felt when Dr. Manhattan appeared, entrances the reader.  I’m not to familiar with Cooke’s art, but he’s off to a great start with this book.  I’m not use to seeing Phil Noto only color a book, but he does a great job here.  He fits the mood great, giving some of the police scenes a noir feel.  Turning up the colors or turning them down at the right down helped set the scene of the supposed “good old days,” when the were really a rather dark time for these heroes.

The Crimson Corsair back up looks good.  It’s hard to only read two pages though.  No doubt it will be released in trade form after everything is said in done, and that is most likely going to be the best way to read it.  Having all these issues, reading two pages, then picking up the next, is not ideal for reading.  But it remains to see how the story is going to be, so I’ll comment on that in future reviews.

While I was curious about this book, even the whole event, some of my weariness has subsided.  If DC had editorially mandated all these stories onto the writers/artists, the quality would be quite apparent right away.  But Minutemen #1 has made me rather optimistic about the event.  It’s way to early to tell if this is going to be an artistic success.  If you were thinking of reading these books, at least give Minutemen #1 a chance.
