We’ve got two previews for some new books hitting comic book stories January 23rd. Our double preview page features the debut of Young Avengers and the follow-up of sorts to Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe.

Young Avengers debuts featuring a new team. The crew includes Wiccan, Hulkling, Hawkeye, Loki, Marvel Boy, and Ms. America. Kieron Gillen writes the series and Jamie McKelvie and Mike Norton provide art.

Also kicking off is a new Deadpool miniseries that follows hot on the heels of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe. Cullen Bunn returns to guide Deadpool in his journey to destroy all of fictions most popular characters. First up- Moby Dick! The series features art by Matteo Lolli and Sean Parsons. Check out the solicit info and preview pages below!

Legacy isn’t a dirty word… but it’s an irrelevant one. It’s not important what our parents did. It matters what WE do. Someone has to save the world. You’re someone. Do the math. The critically acclaimed team of Gillen/McKelvie/Wilson (with added Norton Sauce) decide to reinvent the teen superhero comic for the 21st century, uniting Wiccan, Hulkling and Hawkeye with Loki, Marvel Boy and Ms. America. No pressure. Young Avengers is as NOW! as the air in your lungs, and twice as vital. It’s the book that knows Hyperbole is the BEST! THING! EVER!

Star Trek fans have been hoping for Klingons to appear on film for a while. JJ Abrams had the Klingons appear in his first film, but it was in a deleted scene from the 2009 reboot. More recently the alien race were teased in a skit featuring the director for the MTV Movie Awards last year. Star Trek Into Darkness is still shrouded in mystery, but many reports, rumors, and quick shots in the trailers have been circulating saying the sequel will indeed mark the Klingons return.

IDW is releasing a comic book prequel for Star Trek Into Darkness, called Countdown to Darkness, written by Mike Johnson with a story by Roberto Orci. It is an official prequel comic to the movie and works to bridge the gap between the first film and the second. The cover to #4, the final in the miniseries, shows a Klingon warrior with the much debated helmet. The comic comes out in April and the film in May. Could it be setting the Klingons up for a big role for Into Darkness? Time will tell. What do you think?
Marvel released another one of their mysterious teasers last week featuring the word “Born” in purple lettering with the promoted creative team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Simone Bianchi. Speculation ran wild as to what exactly the series would be. Of course some people nailed it and some people guessed some odd, but wrong characters. The series is in fact a Thanos origin miniseries called Thanos Rising. You may remember last year there was a planned origin tale by Joe Keatinge and Richard Elson that was scrapped after solicitations and promos went out. There was no reason given, but this may be it. Marvel ran a Q&A on their website with Aaron and Bianchi about the new series starting in April.

Marvel touts the series as giving readers a “rare glimpse into the ultimate nihilist’s early days on his far-off home planet Titan” and the life events that lead him down his path of cosmic villainy. Aaron promised that the origin story is literally that, starting with the Mad Titan’s birth. The series will have some new characters, but there will be several familiar names including Thanos’ father Mentor and his mother Sui-San. Aaron talked about the question that runs through the series:

Well, that’s really the main question of the book. Who is Thanos? When the book starts, even Thanos doesn’t know the answer to that question. It’s the pursuit of that answer that begins to take him to some very dark places. This is not a super hero story. There are no good guys swooping in to save the day here. This is the origin story of a very bad dude. A cosmic mass murderer.

This past summer I had the opportunity to speak with Jim Starlin about the first proposed Thanos origin story, and he shared his thoughts on that (you can find that here). Starlin laid down a lot of history for his creation, but Aaron will be going through pulling it all together and giving it a slight twist. Aaron is sticking to Starlin’s work and talks about how he will continue on from what has already been written:

Jim Starlin of course had already laid down a lot of the pieces of Thanos’ origin, but they were spread out in several different stories written over the course of several years. THANOS RISING combines all those pieces and also fills in a lot of the cracks. I think it’s true to Starlin’s original ideas for the character, while also expanding on some aspects of the origin, and playing around a bit with the dark romance part of the character’s history.

The series starts in April, but as of now there is no word on how long the miniseries will run. Thanos Rising will serve as an entry points for people who just found out about the Mad Titan through The Avengers, but old fans will also get something out of it. Aaron has been writing some great stuff the past few years with Scalped and his recent Thor, so it will be interesting to see what he brings to Thanos. Bianchi’s art is great so that’s an added bonus. You can read the full interview to see what Bianchi had to say about redesigning a young Thanos by clicking here. What do you think about the proposed series? Will you be picking this one up?

This August, a five issue miniseries will rewrite everything you thought you knew about the X-Men. The limited series will be written and drawn by Neal Adams with Christos Gage scripting. We teased the First X-Men earlier, you can check it out by clicking here. Well now we know more about it. Taking part in a conference call was legendary comic creator Neal Adams, writer Christos Gage, and the X-books editor Nick Lowe who were teasing the miniseries and what we can expect. CBR has a very lengthy transcript of what went down, but this is the part that may rile fans of the X-Men up and be a deciding factor of how they are going to think about this new miniseries. Christos Gage said this:

It takes place before the original X-Men and at a time when the government was snatching mutants up and doing scary things to them. Logan notices this and thinks somebody needs to look out for them. He recruits Sabretooth, who asks ‘Why?’ and so he pays him. Professor Xavier is a young man studying at Oxford, who’s engaged and wants nothing to do with this. They recruit this guy Erik Lensherr who is out there killing Nazis. Wolverine is a soldier here. He doesn’t put together a school, he puts together a unit, but they are young kids… They do encounter ‘hobo’ Sub-Mariner at one point… We wanted this to be something you could hand to somebody who just saw the X-Men movies and they’d enjoy it as a good X-Men story. At the same time, for giant nerds like me, FBI agent Fred Duncan from the early stories is in there, and when Professor X talks about his brother you know it’s Juggernaut.

Yeah, you read that right. Charles wanted no part of helping mutants, it was all Logan and the hired-hand Sabertooth that wanted to start some sort of collective effort. This is set in continuity and will feature Wolverine’s team fighting for mutants. The team will feature Sabertooth, Magneto, Bomb, and a new but not named as of yet female character. It seems that Professor X will still be the founder of the X-team, but Adams hinted that Wolverine was a heavy influence. If you want to read the full report on what was said, you can find it by clicking here. Lot of interesting information and elaboration on the series, but this seems to be the thing that sticks out the most.

That’s a pretty straightforward title, you know what you’re going to get when you buy a book called Deadpool kills the Marvel universe. This August, author Cullen Bunn and artist Dalibor Talajic will start the bloodbath with a four-issue miniseries published weekly throughout the month. You’ll be seeing something in a similar vein to The Punisher miniseries that saw the entire MU wiped out as well. Author Cullen Bunn and editor Jordan D. White spoke with CBR about the series and shared all of the cover art for the four issues. You can catch the full interview by clicking here, below are a few interesting tidbits.

When asked about how the idea came about and giving fans what the title promises:

White: In many ways, it’s about giving the fans what they want. It’s called “Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe” and we absolutely deliver on the promise of that title. If you think that idea sounds interesting or intriguing at all, this series is made expressly for you.

Bunn: Yeah, I don’t think there’s any subterfuge in the title. This is Deadpool murdering the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe we know and love. On another level, though, it’s kind of a tragic story about being the puppet of greater forces — and how far one might go to be free of all that.

On if this Deadpool’s motivation will be similar to the 616 Deadpool, especially about his love for the personification of Death:

Bunn: His motivations aren’t connected to many of the story elements you might have seen in other books. This kind of tale gives us the chance to do some things we couldn’t even think about in the core Deadpool book. But I wanted a catalyst for Deadpool’s killing spree that could happen in the main book.
At the beginning of this story, we’re dealing with “our” Deadpool. His perceptions have always been a little off-center, but now his world view is crashing down around him. When the switch gets flipped (so to speak), Deadpool takes a very dark turn. From that point, he’s got a very specific goal in mind, and he’s not going to stop for anything or anyone.

And most interesting of all, how high up the Marvel Universe ladder will Deadpool’s killing spree go

Bunn: I think folks will dig seeing just how high up the food chain Deadpool slices and dices. In some cases, he keeps the kills pretty simple. But for some of the heavy hitters, he has to get creative. The thing about Deadpool (especially this Deadpool) is that he sees things differently. It helps make him a more effective killer. He relies on everything from straight forward gun and swordplay to elaborate “Saw”-like deathtraps.
