We also have some details on characters who are very likely to show up in the game. The list includes: The Thing, Juggernaut, Sandman, Green Goblin in a OsCorp Tower level, and Magneto.

Traveller’s Tale took on the DC universe in Lego Batman 2: Dc Super Heroes, a result of the studio being purchased by Warner Bros. in 2007. Because WB owns DC and the gaming company, many thought a Lego Marvel videogame was all but impossible. The fact TT is working on a new Lego game featuring over 100 Marvel characters came as quite the surprise to fans and the game’s developers alike.  In a recent write-up in the newest issue of Game Informer, thanks to our friend Llama for some scans, the company talked on the new project and teased new details for the upcoming game.

Jonathan Smith, TT Games head of production, touched on the seemingly impossible task of WB making a Marvel game:

The experience we’ve had with massive media organizations is that they’re not entirely stocked by bad people. This may come as a shock to people on the internet, but it turns out that big media organizations are capable of making really good decisions with players’ best interests at heart.

The article reveals that the game will feature The Avengers as an important part of the game, but it will work in other characters, factions, and groups inside the Marvel universe. The game’s story will be written by Mark Hoffmeier. The writer is no stranger to big franchises having written some for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and Marvel Super Hero Squad.  The story is still under wraps but it appears Loki will reach out to an unnamed villain to create a “bad-guy alliance to defeat the heroes who stand in their way.”

Two of the game’s most unique characters will be Spider-Man and Hulk. The city of New York will be destroyed in part and rebuilt by players, but gamers can cause destruction of their own with Hulk. The game developers had to work a lot of things around the green behemoth who will be a major focus of the game. Objects have to be destroyable and react to Hulk’s hyperstrength. While the Lego game will have the skillset characters of the previous game, Spider-Man seems to be in a class of his own. Instead of having isolated areas for web use like Batman’s grappling hook, the web slinger can use his webs to stick to any surface and swing wherever players want. Spider-Man’s webs can also be used to tie up bad guys and grab/pull objects. The trademark Spider sense is also in the game. According to one developer “Spider-Man is quite possibly the most difficult of the characters we’ve worked on, but he’s becoming the most satisfying from a design perspective.”

You can learn even more about the upcoming Marvel Lego game by picking up the newest issue of Game Informer. It sounds like this will be going well beyond the usually superhero Lego game fare. With the level of detail and free playing ability to Hulk and Spider-Man, it will be exciting to see what they bring for the other 100+ characters. What do you think? Spoiler warning for Journey Into Mystery #622-#645

Gillen neatly wraps up every dangling plot thread that he started last year.  #645 harkens back to #622, the issue that started this magnificent run.  The ongoing prose that has narrated these issues is explained, as is old Loki’s big plot.  It’s a big one too.  But it’s one that the reader knew was coming all along.  That’s been one of the big reasons I kept reading this book; how and when is old Loki going to take his place back?  Then once the end is here, you can’t help but beg for it not to come, even though you knew it HAD to come eventually.  And if you thought Gillen “killing” Leah tugged at your heartstrings, be prepared to have some tissues ready.  Reading what Gillen had in store for Leah is just tragic.  It’s proof of how detailed and deep Gillen has made each and every character.  Leah has quickly gone from new creation to one of the most interesting new characters in the Marvel universe.  I’ll admit, the touching ending that Gillen gave the Leah/Loki relationship made me cry a little.  In fact, I’m positive I teared up at a few moments during this issue. It’s the first time a comic book has done that.

The big twist that is going to be discussed is the ending. Yes, Kid Loki is dead.  It breaks my heart to say it, but Old Loki is now in Kid Loki’s body.  I’ve read a few opinions that this will lead Old Loki to be a good guy, because Kid Loki technically won.  Old Loki did nothing to redeem himself.  Kid Loki did all the heavy lifting.  So in the end, Kid Loki swallows the lie (literally) and proves that he beat Old Loki at his own game.  And if Old Loki is going to keep his good image up, he is going to have to act like Kid Loki.  He’ll still be the old, scheming ass-hole that he has always been, but he might have some heart now.  He didn’t directly experience all the emotions that Kid Loki went through.  Now that Old Loki is in Kid Loki’s body, he can experience the trust and love that Kid Loki had with Thor.  And while it kills longtime readers to see their favorite character killed off, it’s somewhat rewarding to know that Kid Loki didn’t die in vein.

Stephanie Hans has created the most iconic images of Kid Loki, painting every cover for the series, and it’s a complete treasure to see her paint the interiors.  The emotional scenes hit that much harder with the painted panels.  When Leah is sent into the past, the silhouette that shows Kid Loki shedding tears is the exact panel that made me cry.  And Leah is clearly heartbroken to see the guy she loves and hates so much do this too her, even if she understands.  Loki’s eyes play a big part in every panel, and they seem so human.  It’s tragic to see him have his conversations and have his eyes become sadder with each passing panel.

If you haven’t been reading Journey Into Mystery, go pick up every trade and read it ASAP.  It’s quite possibly the best book that Marvel has been putting out, and a run like this probably won’t come around again.  Kieron Gillen, thank you for one amazing run.

Agent Burgos, Collectors Corner: Hot Toys Thor And Loki Update

The Avengers is still making massive amounts of money. Men In Black 3 took the number one spot this past weekend, but Earth’s Mightiest continues to smash records across the board. With The Avengers success, people are excited to see what Marvel’s next steps are as they work their way toward the sequel. Kevin Feige spoke with Empire Magazine about The Avengers success. He says he was just hoping it could top Iron Man 2′s opening, which was Marvel’s biggest opening weekend at the time. He talks about how Avengers is just a stepping stone to bigger and better things:

The Avengers was not the finale for us. It was a giant, giant marker, but it was never the finale. We are already well into the plan for the next phase of our little cinematic universe.

Next up for Marvel is Thor 2 which will begin shooting very shortly. Feige touches on what we can expect in the sequel as well as confirming what Chris Hemsworth has stated in previous interviews. We will see more of Asgard as well as different parts of the realms. Like the first film, we can expect a split between earth and Asgard:

We’re going to see the other side of Asgard. It’s not all polished and golden in this film. And the events of Avengers will have affected Thor for sure. His relationship with Loki will continue to evolve, and the biggest part is Natalie and Thor returning with Jane Foster.

With the recent casting news that Mads Mikkelsen is going to be a baddie, probably in addition to Loki, and the rumors of The Enchantress popping up we can expect Thor to face a lot of danger. At the end of The Avengers we saw a huge threat in the form of the mad titan Thanos. Hemsworth himself said that Thanos would not be showing up in Thor 2 as the threat, and Feige confirmed this.

No, future, future. But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist.

Now I would say there will probably be some hint or easter egg to keep all the movies tied together, but it’s safe to say Thanos will not be showing up. We’re still taking bets on who Mikkelsen is playing, but there will be a huge threat in Thor 2.

Cody "The Thorverine" Ferrell, Kevin Feige Talks Thor 2: More Asgard, Bigger Villain

There’s been a slew of Marvel casting news coming out over the past few hours. We’ve gotten word on baddies for Iron Man 3 and Thor 2, as well as an old friend returning in Iron Man.

Iron Man:
We’ve heard some great casting news recently about Sir Ben Kingsley signing up to take on a baddie role in the third outing, and now we have another villain to add to the mix. Variety is reporting that Ashley Hamilton is “in talks” to play the small part of government cyborg- Firepower. In the comics, Firepower is the pilot of an experimental armored suit under the mission name of Firepower. Hamilton is a friend of Robert Downey Jr., but have never worked together before. Hamilton competed on the ninth season of Dancing with the stars and is the stepson of Rod Stewart. This will be the third reported villain for IM3, but this is expected to be a small part. He may not even suit up.

Jon Favreau won’t be behind the camera for IM3, but he will be in front of it again as Happy Hogan. It’s being reported that Favreau has closed a deal to again play the bodyguard/sidekick of Tony Stark. This is a pretty big deal, showing that there are no hard feelings between Favreau and new director Shane Black. There hasn’t been any tension that we know of, but this kind of puts any rumors to rest.

Thor 2:
We’ve heard that the Enchantress may be in the next film, but we have stronger proof that  Mads Mikkelsen is “in talks” to star as one of the villains in Thor 2 alongside Loki. Alan Taylor of Game of Thrones is directing, but we have no clue who Mikkelsen is playing. Mikkelesen is probably best known for his role as the villain in Casino Royale.

An interesting side note- Anthony Hopkins is in talks to play the big villain in the sequel to RED starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich if his Thor 2 schedule will allow it.

Finally, Chris Hemsworth spoke with MTV about the next installment. He said that the sequel will be more mythical and feature real world shooting as opposed to greenscreen. He hopes to capture the greatness of Game of Thrones and mix that with Thor. He also talked about the possibility of Thanos popping up in Thor 2- it won’t happen. He says it’s “too easy” and that “We need bigger fish.” You can watch the full video interview by clicking right here.

The Avengers is near for those of us in the states. I’m sure you’ve all bought your tickets to the midnight premiere, called in sick Friday morning, and got your group together for the big night. Comicbooktherapy has our first review, we have a couple more coming up, that you can check out by clicking here if you haven’t seen it yet. We’ve covered a lot of the press and information coming out about The Avengers, but now attention is going to be shifting to what comes next. We’ve got some information about Iron Man 3 and Captain America 2, and now we’re hearing a little about Thor 2.

Loki star Tom Hiddleston spoke with Collider about reading Joss Whedon‘s script, Mark Ruffalo‘s son being excited on the set, and at the last part of the video his excitement and thoughts on Thor 2 at roughly the 2:50 mark. We have confirmation that there will be another big villain in Thor 2, and Hiddleston talks about how relationships will develop post Avengers.

Loki and Thor will be starring in Everything Burns written by Matt Fraction on Thor, and Kieron Gillen on Journey Into Mystery.  Alan Davis and Carmine Di Giandomenico will be picking up art duties, with Davis doing covers. A special 50th Anniversary cover will also be available by Steve McNiven.

MTV Geek spoke with the writing duo about what happens to warrant such an epic crossover event. The premise of the story:

After an old foe returns to wreak vengeance on the nine realms, Thor and Loki have to team up to take him down. But things don’t go as planned, as Asgardian secrets are revealed, Thor finds himself in over his head, and Loki may find all the lies he’s set up over the course of Gillen’s run crashing down on his head.

If you’re a Thor fan you can tell by some of the art that Surtur will be featured in Everything Burns, but he isn’t the main focus. Gillen stated “Yeah, as a glance at the preview art will show, it’s Surtur. Or at least, Surtur is key in it. But a glance at the preview art will also show that there’s a bunch more going on here than just Mr. Tall, Dark-hearted and DOOM!-y.”

Fraction teases what the questions are for this run:

The long-lost history of the Aesir-Vanir war is revealed. The Asgardian civil war that tore the heavens apart once heats up again. Just WHY did the All-Mother go away? Is Loki a good guy or a bad guy or what? How many huge amazing things can Thor hit with a hammer in nine issues? ALL ASKED AND ANSWERED.

Gillen wraps up by teasing the conclusion of what he has been working on in his Journy Into Mystery run. “Loki’s been lying his little heart out for my entire run. Eventually, some of it has had to catch up with him. This is it. This is the pack of lies that he’s released hunting him down and trying to tear him limb from limb.”

Everything Burns will start in Mighty Thor #18 this August and run through Mighty Thor #22 in October. Thor will be alternating issues with Journey #624-#645.

My bet is this is some licensing dispute with Fox, the studio that currently owns the rights to the Fantastic Four. After all, they bought the rights to a ton of characters in the late 90′s, among which was probably Super-Skrull and his minions. So, to avoid a dispute with Fox, Marvel has decided to change the name of their baddies… but they can change the name to whatever they want, we all know that they’re still Skrulls.
