Work on Marc Webb’s Spider-Man sequel is coming along nicely. It seems the majority of the cast is in place and filming will start soon. Two of the new additions to the movie were out and about promoting their movies at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Shailene Woodley, who will be playing Mary Jane Watson, and Dane DeHaan, Harry Osborn, talked a little about the upcoming Spidey movie.

Woodley spoke with MTV about joining the cast and how excited she was about the film. The actress couldn’t reveal too much, but she said she’s a fan of the character and really enjoyed the reboot:

Spider-Man has always been my favorite super hero dude, since I was a little girl. I think there’s something really special about flying. When I watched the previous Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield, he made me feel invincible. I think Marc Webb is amazing. I’m so stoked to work with Andrew and Emma [Stone], they’re the best of the best.

She went on to say that she didn’t know any real details about the film, but she assumes she’ll be part of a love triangle if the comics are anything to go by. Woodley also hinted that she’d be making the transition and become a redhead soon. You can watch the full video interview by clicking here.

Chronicle break-out star Dane DeHaan also chatted about The Amazing Spider-Man sequel while on the red carpet for his film with Daniel “Harry Potter” Radcliffe called Kill Your Darlings. The actor remained tight lipped on what he knows, but he did confirm that he will be involved in a love triangle. Is it with Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane, Aunt May? We’ll have to wait and find out. The director of Darlings may have spoiled a big plot point for the film though. HitFix reports an incident that occured during the cast introductions:

[Director] Krokidas introduced the cast of “Darlings” which includes Daniel Radcliffe, Ben Foster and Michael C. Hall. When he got to DeHaan he said “He’s the Green Goblin.” DeHaan just smiled, but it didn’t seem like Krokidas was kidding.

Is this a case of a director who doesn’t know a lot about comics or is Webb planning on skipping Norman and having Harry don the Green Goblin gear? I would say it’s the first, but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the second happened. The Green Goblin was used in Sam Raimi’s first film, so it would be a little too soon to simply rehash the character. What do you think? Would you be pleased if Harry is the first Green Goblin?

Chris Roberson will be sticking with the pulp heroes beyond the pages of Masks. The writer of the well-received Dynamite crossover event, which we’ve been raving about, will be writing The Shadow ongoing series starting in April. Roberson pointed out the April solicitations for the series:

THE SHADOW #13
Chris Roberson (w)
Giovanni Timpanol (a)
Alex Ross, Paolo Rivera, Tim Bradstreet, Francesco Francavilla (c)
4 regular covers will be shipped in equal ratios
FC • 32 pages • $3.99
A grisly string of random murders has left the authorities baffled, but The Shadow believes there is method to the killer’s madness. At each crime scene, eyewitnesses have spotted the spectral figure of a woman in white. Is “The Light” behind the murders, or a victim’s lost spirit? The Shadow must unravel the mystery before the killer strikes again!

When asked on Twitter if this would be longer than the upcoming “Light” arc, Roberson said he didn’t plan on going away anytime soon. This is great news for Shadow fans. Roberson has handled the cast of Masks well, but his Shadow writing stands out. The writer mentioned he particularly enjoyed writing the character in our interview last month (click here for that). It will be interesting to see what Roberson brings to his first arc. He has written a lot of great stories and comics, but I’ve been particularly impressed with Masks. Having Chris Roberson continue on with the pulp characters will be something you can’t miss. What do you think about the news? Will you be tuning in for The Shadow vs. The Light?

I am Yumi Sakugawa and I am a comic book artist and illustrator based in the Southern California. I am a regular comic / illustrator online contributor to Sadie Magazine and Wonderhowto.

Most recently, my comic zine “Mundane Fortunes for the Next Ten Billion Years and Other Stories” was selected as Notable Comics of 2012 by the Best American Comics anthology editors.

Comic Book Therapy – Thank you very much for taking the time out to do this interview. How have you been doing?

Yumi Sakugawa – It is my pleasure! I’m finally fully recovered from a week-long cold so right now I am feeling pretty amazing.

CBT – You’re a self published comic book artist. How did you start?

Yumi – After I graduated from UCLA, I spent a year teaching English in Japan… because that’s what you do when you have just graduated from college with an art major and you have no idea what you’re going to do with yourself. During that time, a fellow English-teaching American artist friend and I spontaneously decided to sign up for a small booth at the bi-annual Tokyo Design Festa, a giant arts and craft convention that happens in Tokyo every May and November. I didn’t have any art on hand and I definitely did not want to show up as a first-time exhibitor empty-handed–so I furiously whipped up my first self-published 30-page comic zine “Milk and Moo” just in time for the event. Note to new artists, there is nothing like a convention deadline to really force yourself to kick your own butt to get something done.

This was back in 2008, and I had no idea that a zine culture even existed. When I moved back to Los Angeles, I made serendipitous connections with fellow artists in 2010 who introduced me to the zine scene and really got me hooked to showing comic zines at zine conventions.

CBT – What projects have you completed? Currently working on?

Yumi – I’ve self-published about eight comic zines in the last four years, ranging from illustrated guides on meditation to short comic story collections. My most recent self-published comic zine was a 50-page autobiographical diary comic of my travels in Paris and Rome.

Things I’m currently working on? I’ll definitely be releasing more self-published comics about meditation and mindfulness (people seem to really like those), and more short comic story collections. And since the world always needs more self-love and creative inspiration, I’m thinking of releasing a comic zine that deals specifically with self-love and staying inspired as an artist.

I’m also working on a longer fictional comic project right now, longer than anything I have ever made. It’s kind of a secret so either a lot of people will get to read it once it’s done or I won’t finish it and no one will ever know about it. Hopefully it will be the former and not the latter.

CBT – How long have you been in the art world? What inspired you to pick up the pencil/pen and create?

Yumi – I honestly don’t know what counts as being in the art world! I was in my first group art show in 2008 that wasn’t an art school student campus gallery show, so maybe since then? As for what inspired me to pick up the pencil / pen and create, I’ve always been drawing and doodling since I was a small kid, and drawing is the perfect medium to express yourself when you’re a really painfully shy kid and you’re trrified of talking to people.

CBT – As an artist, conventions and other means of showcasing are pretty important to promote your work. Have you attended conventions?

Yumi – Yes! I’ve attended maybe 6 different comic and zine conventions in the last few years and I really love the convention scene. For 2013, I’m really excited that I will be tabling away from the West Coast for the first time ever–at the Brooklyn Zine Fest in April and at the Toronto Comics and Arts Festival in May. Come visit my table if you think you’ll be going to either of those events!

I always make the coolest new friends and discover amazing new artists at every convention event. Seriously, I feel like there is a significantly lower percentage of douchey, pretentious creative types in the zine scene compared to other creative scenes or maybe I have just been really lucky with the people I’ve met. That, and I love having the opportunity to share my work with new people and connect in real-time with people who have seen my work previously on the internet or elsewhere.

If you are just starting out as a comic book artist, then I really recommend signing up for a table or a booth at a comic convention. Even if you don’t sell that many comics in the beginning, you get so much from the whole experience.

CBT – What is your best Convention memory?

Yumi – I think my best convention memory is the first comic and zine convention I’ve ever attended in 2010. I was crammed in one car with three other zine friends and left at 3 in the morning from Los Angeles to arrive just in time in Sacramento at around 10 A.M. to table at Indy Euphoria. I was only there for one day and I hitched a ride back to Los Angeles with another friend that same night. That convention memory is particularly special to me because that was the first time I had the chance to meet Dylan Williams, the late founder of Sparkplug Comic Books. It was at the convention when he actually bought copies of my first comic zine from me to distribute through Sparkplug and as a total newbie, I was so blown away by the possibility that complete strangers would really take a genuine interest in reading my comics. I feel so fortunate to have met him at that time and one more time before his unfortunate passing in 2011.

CBT – Things can be a bit difficult getting into the comic business. What encourages you to continue?

Yumi – I honestly don’t think much about the difficulty of getting into the comic business. Not because I naively think it won’t be difficult for me or anything like that, more so because I’m much more preoccupied on a narcissistic, mundane level with the daily difficulty of motivating myself every single day to find the time and the inspiration to move forward with my comic projects, regardless of busyness or creative blocks.

What keeps me going? Fan mail from an eleven-year-old girl. Complete strangers from countries I’ve never visited ordering my zines online. Seeing my self-published comics on display in my favorite independent bookstores. Kind messages from strangers. The painstakingly slow progress I make as an artist with every new project I finish. Being held accountable to my inner eleven-year-old who always dreamed of becoming a cartoonist.

CBT – Have you done work for other publishers?

Yumi – I’m actually working on something with another comic publisher. I can’t disclose too much information for the moment and more details will be revealed later in 2013. Stay tuned!

CBT – What do you enjoy most about doing comics?

Yumi – I think comics is the best creative medium for me to fully and honestly express myself as an artist and as a human being. Growing up, I was always torn between wanting to become a writer and wanting to become an artist; thankfully with comics, you can do both things at the same time.

CBT – With the year of rebirths and reboots, do you feel it contributes well to the comic business or takes the interest away from longtime readers?

Yumi – I’m the worst person to ask this question. I haven’t actually read any rebirth or reboot comic storylines.

CBT – Who is your favorite comic book artist? Favorite title or series that features his/her art?

Yumi – What a difficult question! I have many favorite comic book artists that changes with what I am interested in at the moment, but I always find myself revisiting again and again “Skim” illustrated by Jillian Tamaki and written by Mariko Tamaki. Coming-of-age stories with interesting female teenage protagonists are my personal catnip.

CBT – What comic book character would you find easy to relate to?

Yumi – This is a Japanese manga character, but I can relate too well with Maruko from the shoujo manga series “Chibi Maruko-Chan.” She’s lazy and disorganized, and prone to retreating to her own imaginary world a lot, just like me. (I can’t relate, however, to her immense dislike of nattou)

As for an American comic book character, this may be an extreme cliche answer but I think Charlie Brown and I would have had a lot of great coffee hang-outs. I was a pretty melancholy kid prone to over-nostalgizing my own childhood experiences in my head as they were happening in real time.

CBT – What would you consider your greatest piece to date?

Yumi – I don’t know if this would be my greatest, but I will always have a huge fondness for my first self-published comic story “Milk and Moo.” There is a wonderful magic that comes out of having no idea what you’re doing but somehow getting it done anyway.

CBT – For those who want to have a start in illustration, what advice would you share with them?

Yumi – Give the world as many opportunities as possible to see your artwork. Have a regularly updated art blog. Show your work at shows. Exhibit at conventions. Meet other artists. Make friends with artists whose skills and work ethic intimidate the shit out of you. Being an artist can be a lonely business, so find a community of artists you can join or make your own community. Find excuses to get your illustration out there, whether it’s volunteering to illustrate for a someone’s music event flyer or challenging yourself to publishing a weekly web comic with a friend.

In the beginning, all of this may seem like shooting darts in the dark. It is all worth it for the momentum that you create for yourself that will carry you over to your next great opportunity.

CBT – Thank you very much! Is there anything you’d like for us to be on the lookout for?

Yumi – Since so many people have asked about this, I will be releasing a limited artist booklet print of my emo-comic “I Think I Am In Friend-Love with You” sometime this month (January). If you are looking for the perfect not-so-subtle gift to give to your friend-crush for Valentine’s Day, this is it.

Marvel released another one of their mysterious teasers last week featuring the word “Born” in purple lettering with the promoted creative team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Simone Bianchi. Speculation ran wild as to what exactly the series would be. Of course some people nailed it and some people guessed some odd, but wrong characters. The series is in fact a Thanos origin miniseries called Thanos Rising. You may remember last year there was a planned origin tale by Joe Keatinge and Richard Elson that was scrapped after solicitations and promos went out. There was no reason given, but this may be it. Marvel ran a Q&A on their website with Aaron and Bianchi about the new series starting in April.

Marvel touts the series as giving readers a “rare glimpse into the ultimate nihilist’s early days on his far-off home planet Titan” and the life events that lead him down his path of cosmic villainy. Aaron promised that the origin story is literally that, starting with the Mad Titan’s birth. The series will have some new characters, but there will be several familiar names including Thanos’ father Mentor and his mother Sui-San. Aaron talked about the question that runs through the series:

Well, that’s really the main question of the book. Who is Thanos? When the book starts, even Thanos doesn’t know the answer to that question. It’s the pursuit of that answer that begins to take him to some very dark places. This is not a super hero story. There are no good guys swooping in to save the day here. This is the origin story of a very bad dude. A cosmic mass murderer.

This past summer I had the opportunity to speak with Jim Starlin about the first proposed Thanos origin story, and he shared his thoughts on that (you can find that here). Starlin laid down a lot of history for his creation, but Aaron will be going through pulling it all together and giving it a slight twist. Aaron is sticking to Starlin’s work and talks about how he will continue on from what has already been written:

Jim Starlin of course had already laid down a lot of the pieces of Thanos’ origin, but they were spread out in several different stories written over the course of several years. THANOS RISING combines all those pieces and also fills in a lot of the cracks. I think it’s true to Starlin’s original ideas for the character, while also expanding on some aspects of the origin, and playing around a bit with the dark romance part of the character’s history.

The series starts in April, but as of now there is no word on how long the miniseries will run. Thanos Rising will serve as an entry points for people who just found out about the Mad Titan through The Avengers, but old fans will also get something out of it. Aaron has been writing some great stuff the past few years with Scalped and his recent Thor, so it will be interesting to see what he brings to Thanos. Bianchi’s art is great so that’s an added bonus. You can read the full interview to see what Bianchi had to say about redesigning a young Thanos by clicking here. What do you think about the proposed series? Will you be picking this one up?

Mark Millar has been staying pretty busy lately. The comic book writer has been juggling some new projects on his Millarworld imprint, working on the Kick-Ass 2 movie, and doing his duties as 20th Century Fox’s creative consultant for their Marvel movies. The first film out of the gate is James Mangold’s Wolverine. Miller talked about everyone’s favorite Canadian berserker in a recent interview.

Speaking with SciFiNow (via Totalfilm.com), Millar praised Mangold’s movie saying the director is brilliant. The movie started filming before Millar got the consultant job, but he has overseen much of the film’s production. Having written one of the best Wolverine stories, Old Man Logan, Millar believes the character is ripe for solo movies:

I don’t think it detracts having individual Wolverine adventures from the X-Men. He’s like a lone wolf character, he disappears and does his own thing sometimes and then he comes back and hangs out at the mansion, so it does feel quite natural for him to be in these movies.

While Wolverine is a favorite among fans, he does have the potential to be overused as can be seen in several comics nowadays. Millar doesn’t want to make that mistake:

You don’t want to have him out there all the time, because I think if you’ve got him in X-Men and Wolverine movies and they’re all running at the same time, it’s a little bit too much but as long as you’re smart with it then there’s a lot of other characters to explore… The X-Men universe is about the same size as the Marvel universe in terms of the number of titles it sustains at any one time, so there’s a ton of stuff to play with there and a lot of characters I’d like to explore there too.

Wolverine has been slightly overused in the past few years. You can’t swing a cat in the Marvel universe without hitting a team he’s on (CBT doesn’t condone swinging cats, it’s just a phrase). Say what you will about Millar, but the man has had a good grasp on the character. We know Wolverine will pop up in Days of Future Past, but maybe we’ll see his appearances scaled back a bit afterwards. What do you think about Millar’s comments? Do you like your Wolverine in moderation?

Last week Marvel released a whole slew of teasers for several of their books showing off a new artist on some of the Marvel NOW! titles. One of the teasers that got fans excited was the announcement that legendary Thor artist Walter Simonson would be teaming up with writer Mark Waid for Indestructible Hulk. The image released show the Green Goliath trying to lift the mighty Mjolnir. In a recent interview with iFanboy, the writer and artist commented on the upcoming arc. But first, the solicit info for the April issue:

It’s off to Jotunheim, the land of the Frost Giants as Bruce Banner and his lab team embark on an all-new secret mission for S.H.I.E.L.D! Caught trespassing by the local natives, they’re going to need the help of the mighty Avenger, Thor!

Waid is excited to get Simonson on the book and having the legendary artist draw Thor again. While Thor will be showing up, the question should be which Thor is showing up? Waid makes an interesting statement about the Thor we’ll be seeing:

Why on Earth would you have the amazing Walt Simonson aboard and NOT ask him to draw Thor? The teasing question is–which Thor will we be seeing? Banner and his team of assistants build a portal to Jotunheim, land of the Frost Giants, in order to obtain a rare metal there–but in doing so, they may have accomplished something totally unforeseen!

While we’ll have to wait and see exactly what Waid means, Simonson touched on revisiting the world of Thor and how he goes about tackling the Hulk:

It’s been interesting drawing Thor and not writing him. (laughs) I like what Mark’s been asking me to draw a lot, and he has kindly allowed me to kibitz a little. My earliest work on Thor was done pretty much the same way when I did layouts for Len Wein to write on the Thor title in the 70s. I also got to draw Thor in some of the Brian Bendis Avengers recently. I’ve found it’s been a lot of fun for me to go back and revisit the old boy again.

Regarding the drawing the Hulk and Thor, there’s an essential difference in their natures I try to reflect in the figure work.
I’ve approached drawing the Hulk with a certain ‘wildness’, since he is essentially a ‘monster’ who is the unfettered version of a mortal. The shapes that make up his figure as well as the actual lines used to define those shapes can be far less restrained that they might otherwise be for a more ordinary character. In other words, the drawing technique itself is meant to suggest the limitless quality of the Hulk’s fury and power. And because of his ‘monstrous’ nature, the Hulk’s figure and face don’t require the kind of symmetry that a character like Thor needs in order to be handsome within the context of the comic. I’m also inspired by the earliest versions of the Hulk by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko where there seems to me to have been a nod to the Karloff Frankenstein monster of the early Universal horror films. All of which means I can pack a lot into my drawings to try to capture some reflection of the Hulk’s wild nature.

If you want to check out the full interview with Waid and Simonson click here. It will be exciting to see Simonson taking on Thor again. The artist did some incredibly work with the thunder god back in the day, so having him return to draw again mixed in with it being a Hulk book makes this a must get. What do you think about Simonson’s return? From what Mark Waid said do you think we’ll get a big twist with the Thor story?

Don Cheadle may have missed out on all the action in The Avengers, but from what we’ve seen so far he’ll make up for it in Iron Man 3. Colonel James Rhodes will be suiting up in a new patriotic War Machine suit in the Shane Black directed threequel. The actor wouldn’t comment on the new suit though, only saying he’d let people react to it when they see it. While out promoting his Showtime comedy series, House of Lies, Cheadle spoke with Collider about the highly anticipated Marvel film.

Cheadle knows that expectations are extremely high for the first post-Avengers film, but it sounds like he and the cast are ready for the challenge:

I hope that it performs to those levels. We did a little piece of it at Comic-Con and people went crazy. It looked great. The script is good. We’re doing a couple re-shoots next week, but I’m encouraged.

Iron Man 2 was directed by Jon Favreau whereas 3 will be handled by the aforementioned Shane Black. Cheadle praises the new director saying he had a good time with a really good cast. He said the director came up with “an interesting script” that was “a lot of fun.” When asked how he would shake things up in Iron Man 3, the actor may have let a spoiler out of the bag:

I’m not supposed to say that he kills Robert Downey Jr.’s character. Is that a spoiler? That would be a spoiler. You knew that was coming. You read the comic books. No. I will just say that the buddy relationship that these guys have gets tighter. The third act set piece for the big finale is bigger and badder. It’s just a lot more.

OK that wasn’t really a spoiler. It would be an incredible shock though you have to admit. The actor did confirm what we had only heard rumors of, that some re-shoots will take place next week in Manhattan Beach. With the stills and clips we’ve seen from the film it does look like the Rhodes/Stark relationship will be explored even further than the second film.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Frank Welker, one of the greats in the voice-acting community, and got to talk a bit about his career and some of his favorite roles over the years. For those who aren’t familiar with Frank’s work (for all you young-ins out there) Frank lends his voice to such high-profile characters Fred Jones and [as of 2002] Scooby-Doo from Scooby-Doo, and the Decepticon Leader Megatorn from the original cartoon and the current “Prime” series. That’s enough of a history lesson let’s get this underway.

Wilt (CBT): First and foremost I want to thank you for taking the time from your busy schedule for this interview. You’re regarded as one of the most well-known and beloved voice-actors of all-time; how did you get started voice-acting and what keeps you doing such a fantastic job of it?

Frank Welker: Well, after that wonderful characterization of me, how could I refuse??!! Thank you!

I was doing standup comedy and a producer who was casting a dog food commercial saw me doing a dog and cat fight on stage and cast me on the spot. I had no idea what a voice over was…but that was the start. I really had no idea that the voice part of the business would be where I would spend my career really. I still remained busy in the on camera side doing films and television shows and traveled all over the country with my comedy act…but alas, it was the noise making and the voice over area where I spend the majority of my time. It seemed to be a good fit and I have enjoyed the ride!!!

CBT: You’ve done so many iconic voices throughout your career, from Fred Jones and since 2002 Scooby-Doo from Scooby-Doo, Doctor Claw from Inspector Gadget, many voices from the classic Transformers Cartoon with Megatron being perhaps the role you’re most known for and one of my favorites Nibbler from Futurama. Besides those of the Transformers what was one of your favorite characters to voice?

FW: I had a lot of fun with Slimer from the “Ghostbusters” and I enjoyed doing the voice of Jabberjaw that was a treat since I was doing Curly from the “Three Stooges.” A side note, I worked with Moe’s daughter and son in law Norman Maurer. They seemed to like what I did and I loved the fact that part of the family was giving me the nod of approval. Plus, I really liked the “Stooges” and doing Curly was a dream job, I truly felt like I was channeling nuk nuk nuk!

CBT: Many Transformer fans consider you THE voice of Megatron. How was it coming back to the role as the cherished Decepticon Leader?

FW: Yes, I do see myself as Megatron. “Leader of the Decepticons.” I have pretty much done him since the beginning in some venue or another so I claim “squatters” rights. Since I was the original Megatron, that in and of itself seems to resonate with the fans, and I’ve got to tell you the fans are fantastic and so supportive without their vocal support I don’t think I would still be doing the voice after all these years.

CBT: I’ve noticed that in Transformers: Prime, Megatron is much more maniacal, ruthless and calculating. You’ve added those qualities to the classic Megatron voice to complete a truly frightening version of Megs. Was it a conscious decision to differentiate Prime-Megatron from G1 Megatron? If so what were your influences in that direction?

FW: Yes, it was. Since we have much more time to develop the story and there are far fewer characters in each episode, that gives us a little more time to focus on the inner working of the mind. We were not driven so much by action but more by the overall development and individual agendas. Also, if you notice in the shows you can see much more detail in the faces, the CGI lends itself to subtle vocal qualities. That really helps in playing more drama and character reaction. There are times when I can give Megs just a low slow growl and it is very effective in conveying feelings that would be lost in huge rush of action. I enjoy slowing him down to get those edges and that gives me a lot in reserve for his manic G1 fun screams and frustrated gyrations. Bottom line I have taken the G1 Megatron and with time and story been able to add more dimension and hopefully make him someone you wouldn’t want to invite to Sunday dinner!!

CBT: What is it like to be so loved as villain? There were so many people who were upset when you were not the voice Megatron in the Michael Bay films.

FW: That totally surprised me. I had no idea that we had so many fans let alone such vocal fans. As I already mentioned they are awesome and responsible for keeping me wearing the evil armor.

CBT: As a parting thought are there any words of wisdom for fans or anyone who would like to get into voice-acting?

FW: Sure, there is a wide open market and they are always looking for new people…but it is very competitive. With the internet I don’t see how anyone can be kept from doing and showing ones talents. You need to get an agent which there are a good top ten and found through the SAG. There of course is a protocol for being professional and making demos. You should have a good voice range and not be afraid to use your imagination. I would recommend reading everything you can get your hands on. Practice reading aloud from comics and newspapers…there is a lot you can do, but the most important thing of all, don’t audition for “Megatron” or some very angry fans might just spam you!!!!

Thanks for your interest Wilt…Megatron, “Leader of the Decepticons!”

You can hear Frank and his talents on Transformers: Prime Saturdays at 8:30pm ET/ 5:30pm PST on The Hub.

a first-of-its-kind interview, details Jones’ motivation for creating the character and aspects of his life that have never before been told. The wide-ranging discussion, according to Goldstein (author of “The Way of the Nerd” series) has an intense feel reminiscent of the famed “Frost-Nixon” interviews of the 1970s.

“Many aspects of Phoenix’s personality come through in the interviews,”

said Goldstein, who as a confident of Jones prior to his unmasking on October 6 in Seattle was able to extract many intimate details of his subject’s life.

“This is the kind of story that gets me really excited to be in the superhero business. Phoenix is a real life version of what we’ve been reading about for decades,”

said Gareb Shamus, Wizard World CEO.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with movie and television actor IronE Singleton about his upcoming role in the highly anticipated television series The Walking Dead on AMC, which promises to make zombies the new vampire. It premieres with a 90-minute episode, fittingly, on Halloween, Oct. 31.

Viewers may best know Singleton from his breakout performance as the manipulative drug dealer in the critically acclaimed film The Blind Side (2009), which nabbed star Sandra Bullock an Academy Award.

Now, as Singleton takes on a new challenge, playing a human named T-Dog living in the apocalyptic world Robert Kirkman created in his comic book series The Walking Dead. Director Frank Darabont, who was behind the camera in the powerful 1994 film Shawshank Redemption, starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, is one of the latest big-time Hollywood directors to turn to the small screen to bring fans this zombie drama. Singleton talks about his new role, how TV inspired him to act, his passion for reading and of course, comics.

One-On-One With IronE Singleton

(This interview has been edited and condensed)

Comic Canuck: I saw the trailer the other day and it looks great, wow.

Singleton: Is that trailer not amazing? I’m telling you. I saw it and I was blown away and I was like, people just don’t know what they’re about to get. I mean they are in for an amazing ride.

Comic Canuck: I showed my Dad the trailer the other day, he’s 64 and he just thought it looked amazing. And he’s going to try and check it out as well.

Singleton: It covers such a broad spectrum of people from one to 98, 99 and 100-years-old. Everyone can be entertained. It crosses cultural boundaries and everything so I think this could be a worldwide sensation.

Comic Canuck: I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that I quite enjoyed your performance in The Blind Side as well.

Singleton: You know, that was my breakout moment for Hollywood. I had been doing so many small independent projects and ever since then, God has really blessed me to have had the good fortune of working with such influential and great people in the industry since The Blind Side, so thank you so very much.

Comic Canuck: Oh you’re welcome. With The Walking Dead, what was it that drew you to the project?

Singleton: Well, Mr. Frank Darabont first and foremost because you know, I hadn’t heard of The Walking Dead beforehand because, although I watched a lot of comic book series converted to TV shows and movies, when I was growing up, reading was not really preached a lot in my environment. It wasn’t really advocated much growing up in the inner-city of Atlanta so when I heard of The Walking Dead I was like, okay that’s cool and then they said Frank Darabont was the director and I said okay where’s the script? (He laughs) So I was very motivated to audition for that. At the audition I got the opportunity to meet Robert Kirkman and found out more about the comic book series and fell in love with it also because it’s all so very entertaining and just different. …Later on I found out [producer] Gale Anne Hurd – she did Aliens and Terminator and a whole bunch of other blockbuster movies – was involved. I was like, man this right here, with the people that they had brought in to oversee this show to make sure that it is the best production ever, so that really kind of inspired me as well.

Comic Canuck: So have you had a chance to read any of the volumes of The Walking Dead comic series?

Singleton: I have read certain segments of it on the set. I’ve done so much research, extensive research on the internet.

Comic Canuck: That’s cool. I actually just, admittedly, picked up Volume One a few weeks ago and, man, I was blown away by it. I’d always heard of it and had friends who say, ‘Oh you’ve got to read it, you’ve got to read it.’ And then I finally picked it up and wow, if the show is anything close to it, it’s just going to be incredible.

Singleton: Exactly! There’s so many things that will throw you off also. Like things that you don’t expect, things that you have not read in the comic book series, which is another reason why viewers should tune in because you’re going to get some surprises there also. The avid followers of the comic are going to find out that they will be in for a bunch of surprises as well.

Comic Canuck: Speaking of things that are new to the series that are not in the comic and correct me if I’m wrong, but your character T-Dog is a new character introduced is he not?

Singleton: He’s not mentioned in the comic series. (He laughs) We’re going to have to wait and see exactly who T-Dog really is. I can’t expound too much on it, but yes, from what the comic book followers know about this series, T-Dog has never existed.

Comic Canuck: Okay. Is there any more insight you can give us on the character of T-Dog without giving too much away or any spoilers?

Singleton: When all Hades breaks loose in the show, he’s the voice of reason just like every other character. In an apocalyptic setting certain rules and laws are broken and T-Dog basically gives his input as to why he’s against certain things. He’s the voice of conscience just as the other characters are.

Comic Canuck: I like that.

Singleton: Whenever I’m doing my character work I basically base that character around who I am as a person and what I’ve experienced … Now, every actor has a different approach to how they do their character work, but that’s how I do mine. I take a character as far into my own life as I can. T-Dog goes as far as me making it to college and playing college football.

Comic Canuck: Yeah, that’s fantastic that you can draw from that and I like your approach to it as well. And you’re talking about obviously growing up and your experiences and I wanted to ask you - and you touched on it a bit earlier – did you read any comics growing up or have you read any recently that you can tell us about?

Singleton: Only The Walking Dead right now. I’ve been so extremely busy I haven’t had the time. I’m a big fan of non-fiction so I haven’t even had time to do that because I’ve been working on The Walking Dead … and doing so many other things as far as my music is concerned because I do socially conscious rap and other things like that. So I have not been able to. But I watched, like I said when I was coming up, I just watched a whole bunch of the comic book series that were converted into movies, like Superman and Spider-Man and even – I don’t know if you remember - but Spectreman. Do you remember Spectreman?

Comic Canuck: I think so.

Singleton: Okay, well I might be a bit old school because I’m 35-years-old, so Spectreman and others, were all comic books … and they were converted into TV shows and/or movies. I watched a lot of that stuff because in a sense the TV was part-parent for me. One of my parents; I guess a third parent or something like that. I stayed in front of the TV, which I think is the thing that motivated me to become an actor.

Comic Canuck: You said you’re a fan of non-fiction and I know you’ve been busy the last little while, but what’s a non-fiction that you’ve read or that you love?

Singleton: The biggest one is Inspiration (Your Ultimate Calling) by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer and his series comes on public television and it talks about where we come from and the source that from which we all originated and how we are all one and how we are all connected. We have the same energy that we bring into the world as humanity. But it’s a very spiritually uplifting and empowering book. So that is the one that jumps out at me at this moment, I guess that’s my favorite book. But I have a one man show that I do and it was compared to Eckhart Tolle, which is Oprah Winfrey’s favorite book, The New Earth, they compared it to that.

Comic Canuck: Wow, that’s big.

Singleton: I’m big on non-fiction that focuses on betterment, focuses on empowerment and focuses on becoming a better person.

Comic Canuck: Well that sounds pretty good. And your one-man show being compared there is fantastic.

Singleton: Yeah, it blew me away!

Comic Canuck: What’s it like to be part of such a highly anticipated series?

Singleton: It’s amazing because last year with The Blind Side – it’s only been a year since my first major Hollywood production dropped – which was by the way, one of the biggest movies of 2009. Now here I am this year, in what’ll probably be one of the biggest shows of not only 2010, but I’d say, ever. I’m bold enough to kind of make that type of prediction because this thing is going to be distributed in 130-plus countries and 250 million households. So how huge is that? That’s unprecedented. To be a part of something like this, I know that God is really at work in my career. I mean, and other people may refer to it just as that supreme force, that positive energy that exists in the world. But I know that God is really working here or else I wouldn’t be in this situation. I told one person in particular that when I drove home every day from the set of The Walking Dead, I just thanked God. I got really emotional driving home and just thinking about how huge this thing was and the fact that I was a part of it. It’s uh…It’s mind blowing.

Comic Canuck: And I agree, and obviously from a fan point of view – and I am a fan – I can’t wait to see it. I know there’s a ton of people just chomping at the bit, no pun intended, (he laughs) to see it. Can you describe to us the type of ride you think this series will take the viewers on?

Singleton: Woo! You’re talking about not just drama between the humans and the zombies, but you’re talking about all of the drama that takes place between the human beings themselves, because there’s a lot of tension. You’re running and hiding and ducking and dodging all these zombies, shooting them with this and that. So many different things, but it just you know, it’s a lot of excitement. Between me and in particular [actor] Michael Rooker who plays Merle Dixon, we get into a confrontation and it’s a rollercoaster ride.

Although there’s not much happiness in this world, I mean, you wouldn’t imagine that there is because in this type of world, how can you be too happy? … But we have this subtle humor that’ll make the fans laugh; so there are funny moments. But then there are these moments where you want to cry. You want to scream. A lot of screaming! A lot of screaming, a lot of fear and I want to apologize in advance to all the fans that are going to be traumatized (We both laugh) when this thing drops. … A lot of people may not want to sleep by themselves or what not after this thing airs. Or go upstairs by themselves or something because I know as a kid I watched a lot of scary movies and I know what those movies did to me. Like Friday the 13th and Halloween and all of those, I know how much fear I was in so I apologize in advance for the fear that’s going to be instilled in so many people. Sadness, anger, fear, some laughter, it’s just an amazing rollercoaster ride. People are just going to have to tune in for this treat here.

Comic Canuck: That’s fantastic. Well, we’ll try not to hold it against you if we get too scared. I again want to thank you for taking the time to talk to me and I can’t wait to watch The Walking Dead.

Singleton: Thanks very much.

In an interview with Collider, actor Stanley Tucci talks about his upcoming films, with the most prominent one being in Joe Johnston‘s Captain America movie. Discussing his “Dr. Abraham Erskine” role, and working with green screen.

Q: I don’t think you’ve done a genre film like Captain America before. Are you fascinated by the challenge of creating character when you’re in the midst of spectacle?

ST: Absolutely. It is kind of weird when you’re suddenly doing a green screen thing, and then acting really comes into play because you’re acting to nothing. But you still have to approach them all the same way and it has to be approached truthfully. And then, like anything, you have what you bring to it to make that character real and truthful. And then, of course, you have to make technical adjustments depending upon what kind of set it is.

Q: Is acting opposite nothing an interesting acting challenge or is it inhibiting and an obstacle?

ST: It’s fine. It’s a challenge. It’s not preferable. It’s not like you want to make every movie like that.

Q: Do you worry about the comic book fans who know every nuance of the character?

ST: (Laughs) That’s up to them. I don’t know. You just do it the way it is on the page and then you bring to it what you can bring to it. And if they don’t like it and they want it to be different, I suppose they could go make their own movie.

Q: But the script is in the universe, have you gone to every comic book store and picked up every Captain America comic book?

ST: No, and at least in the drawings that I saw of Erskine, this character that I play, I don’t look anything like that, like he was in the comic book. But the essence of the character is absolutely truthful to the story, to the original comics, which is, he’s this very smart, very sweet scientist who escapes the Nazis and helps create Captain America. And he’s older. He’s elderly which is why they cast me. (Laughs)
