It seems like there are countless ‘what if’ stories when it comes to comic book movies and TV shows. When a new one pops up, its usually along the lines of a discarded script or an actor/actress passing on a role. This Walking Dead story falls in the latter category. At a special Q&Q following the Hero Complex Film Festival screening of The Mist, Frank Darabont and Thomas Jane fielded a few questions from the audience. Darabont, who developed, executive produced, and directed episodes of The Walking Dead, was answering a question when he went off in a slight tangent revealing Thomas Jane was pretty close to being Rick Grimes. We’ve heard a little about that possibility in the past, but I believe this is the first time the two men have been together to talk about it.

Darabont was asked about the similarities in tone between The Mist and The Walking Dead. He answered the question by talking about some of his other projects like The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile being similar situations. As he discussed how he went about making two seemingly similar things different, he revealed that The Mist and Walking Dead was almost very similar because Thomas Jane was his choice for the lead role on that project as well- Rick Grimes. Jane had helped bring the series to HBO‘s attention and told them he wanted to be a part of it. At that time he was working with HBO doing the series Hung. That was a problem, but Jane told the network he wanted to do both. As we know, HBO passed on Walking Dead because they thought it was ‘too graphic.’ Darabont does go on to praise Andrew Lincoln and how perfect he was for the part though. Jane jokes that if it would have worked out for him, he’d still have a job. You can check out the full video (which I highly recommend so you can see Jane goes full Al Bundy as he sits with a half buttoned shirt and his hand planted down his pants) by clicking here. Would you have liked Jane as Rick Grimes? What do you think the series would be like if he was involved?

Director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pacific Rim) is planning to adapt the critically acclaimed manga “Monster” for HBO. According to Deadline.com, Del Toro is working to adapt the 18 volume manga written by Naoki Urasawa alongside Steven Thompson. Thompson is best known for his work on Dr. Who and Sherlock. Thompson and del Toro are co-writing the pilot, while del Toro intends to direct it. Del Toro will serve as executive producer and Thompson will be co-executive producer. Also serving as executive producers are Gary Ungar, Don Murphy and Susan Montford. Murphy and Montford both collaborated with del Toro on his attempt to adapt HP Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness.”

Promotional image for the anime adaptation

Deadline describes the series as:

The worldwide search by a young doctor for the most evil sociopath that has ever lived. He is a 12-year-old boy, and the doctor’s decision to save his life has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s Box that leaves the doc battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.

It is unknown at this point whether the series will differ from the manga in some regards, such as the protagonist being Japanese or the post Cold-War German setting. Del Toro has been courting creator Urasawa on the idea for some time. A previous attempt to adapt the series was made by New Line, who found the content to be too expansive to be condensed into films.

The manga was previously adapted as a critically acclaimed anime series by Madhouse. Both the manga and the anime are currently licensed and available through Viz Media for an English release.

This series, a collision of comedy, sex, and violence, follows the misadventures of America’s most dysfunctional family as they go head-to-severed head with an Oprah-loving ax murderer, a cult-crazy soap opera star, and a neo-Nazi prison gang.
First issue: Todd wants desperately to make friends, but every kid he approaches winds up decapitated. Or worse. Meanwhile, Todd’s mother is on a mission to get even with her husband who she believes is having an affair.

Todd, The Ugliest Kid On Earth is a new four issue series with a story by M.K. Perker and Ken Kristensen. The issue is written by Kristensen with art and letters from Perker. Cemal Soyleyen joins the duo by providing colors. Todd is an odd new book, but is it worth checking out?

A new family is moving into their new home when Todd, the ugliest kid on Earth, comes over to try and make friends with the nice little Korean girl. Todd frightens most other children his age because he walks around with a giant paper bag covering his face. But Todd is a nice, sweet kid who just wants to make a friend. That’s hard to do when Mike, the neighborhood bully, and his gang roll up on the scene to harass Todd and cause him to get into trouble. Mike is the little devil that bullies everyone but uses his silver tongue to talk his way into the good graces of the adults. Back at home Todd has to deal with his drunken father and inattentive mother. While watching the news, the family learns of an axe murderer on the loose who targets children. While the news report tells parents to keep their children inside, Todd’s mom wants him to take out the trash…in the rain…with an axe murderer in the area. You might be able to guess what happens. That sets off the comedy of misunderstanding that ensues.

Perker and Kristensen have a truly unique story on their hands. This odd, politically incorrect, and wacky story features a cast of messed up characters and humor that should hook any reader. While it’s hard to say there’s anything quite like Todd, the nearest compression would be something along the lines of The Maxx and The Oblongs. The art is absolutely amazing. Perker along with Soyleyen’s colors make a beautiful book. I mean this as a huge compliment, but it looks similar to what you would see in a children’s book. You have some cartoony looking art with bright and vivid colors. The backgrounds are fantastic and the characters are slightly exaggerated in their face, size, and features.

Bottom Line: Todd, the Ugliest Kid on Earth is a fantastic book like no other. This oddball story features slightly risqué humor with fantastic art. Perker and Kristense have a lot to live up to with the remaining three issues. If it’s anything like the first issue, we’re in for a great ride 5/5

Martin‘s series of books has been renewed for a third season. The network ordered a third season hot off the heels of the debut of the second season getting record ratings.

As George and all his fans have said for a long time, there’s no way to do [Swords] in a single season, so it’s being broken into two. We’re still kind of figuring out exactly what goes where. We don’t want it to feel like a two-part season… From the beginning we’d always prayed we’d get to season 3 at least because, you know, two of our favorite scenes from the entire saga are in season 3.
