Muy Mareado!, Indie Spotlight: Yumi Sakugawa

Now, I understand this isn’t the most geeky thing to be highlighting, but when I’m not slaving away for the militant owner of this site, I’m slobbering and drooling over vehicles that I wish to someday own. Not to mention, some of these vehicles have graced the pages of our beloved comics in the past. As with many of the lists you’ll see me post, these are in no particular order. How do you put a level of awesomeness on these things, really?

When you think of a group of bad-asses, the A-Team should be at the top of your list. If it isn’t, please leave your man-card on the table as you escort yourself out of the building. This team, which consisted of H.M. Murdock, B.A. Baracas, Hannibal Smith and Templeton “Faceman” Peck, used this van for many things, anything from an every day vehicle to a battering ram to a  full-on assault vehicle. But no matter what, this beast made it through everything. The van was revived for Joe Carnahan’s film adaptation and fans couldn’t help but giggle a little bit when the van made its appearance.

While my opinion of Supernatural  has changed over the years, one thing that remains the same is my love for this classic American car. This vehicle makes me happy in ways an inanimate object should. The sound of the metal doors creaking as they open and close, the rumble of the exhaust and the simplistic back paint, what’s not to love? At the end of season five, Chuck sums things up nicely by  calling the Impala “the most important object in the universe.” The classic rock soundtrack that is always present on the show never hurts either. This is a classic car for a pair of brothers that do what “Murica” does best: kick ass!

The paint job is just as iconic as the car itself. When one sees this classic look on a car, only one show (or movie for the younger crowd) comes to mind: Starsky & Hutch. While the car may not have been the biggest and baddest muscle car ever made, you wouldn’t know by looking back at the series. Originally, a Chevy Camaro was to be the car of choice, as show creator William Blinn fondly remembered his convertible he owned. But being that the leasing program was through Ford, they opted for a Ford Gran Torino, which featured the famed 351 Windsor V8 engine and the now iconic red and white paint theme. The rest, as they say, is history. Talk about a good move!

You didn’t think I’d make a list like this and not include this car, right? Despite it being over 50 years old, this car is still considered to be among the top Batman vehicles ever, movies, TV or comics; not to mention of any famous vehicles…ever. Hence its inclusion here. The car cost a whopping $125,000, which doesn’t sound like much for a fully custom vehicle, but if you factor in inflation, you’d be looking at a vehicle with a value of about $2 million today. Everything about this car is custom made, including the “bing bong” warning bell and the sender/receiver computer in the trunk.

When I was a kid, nothing impressed me more than seeing Bo and Luke Duke racing to the General Lee, sliding across the hood and climbing through the window to head off on a back-country, high speed chase. I wanted to be a Duke more than anything. To this day, whenever I see an old Charger, I can’t help but smile. Fun fact: anywhere from 250 to 300 Dodge Chargers were used- and wrecked- during the taping of The Dukes of Hazzard. They often times would recycle parts to fix some of the cars up to reuse them. Even more cop cars were damaged during film. Sadly, whenever this car makes appearances now, the Confederate flag that is featured on the roof will no longer be used.

You want to talk assault vehicle? The Chrysler Imperial that was used for Black Beauty not only had a drastically modified exterior, but the gizmos and weapons that were included make the Batmobile look like a Barbie Power Wheel. The car was able to launch rockets via tubes below the headlights, a concealed-when-not-in-use, drop-down knock-out gas nozzle in the center of the front grill, and the capabilities to launch a video surveillance device- or scanner- from a hidden compartment. Just to name a few things. The car featured a one-of-a-kind paint job that included 30 layers of black paint. For the 2011 remake, the car kept to the same concept, but upped the ante and was easily the highlight of the film.

Before David Hasselhoff was running around in little red shorts, he was behind the wheel of this super smart, ultra computerized Trans Am. KITT, which stands for Knight Industries Two Thousand), has literally dozens of high-tech upgrades: turbo boost, Etymotic Equalizer (he could hear), Olfactory Sensor (he could smell), Silent Mode, Oil Jets/Smoke Screen, Flame Thrower and Ultramagnesium Charges. That list could go on for some time, but I’ll hold off on the awesomeness. Take all that and drop it into one of the most iconic cars of the 80′s (it’s still quite popular among folks with a mullet and have a hankerin’ for pork rinds) and you have yourself a pretty bad-ass whip.

When you mention the classic series Magnum, PI, most people will remember Tom Selleck’s luscious push-broom mustache or his ridiculously short shorts. But not me. What I remember most is that bright red, targa-topped Ferrari 308, a car that some enthusiasts to be among the most beautiful cars that the Italian automaker has ever produced. I couldn’t agree more. This care was able to bring down the fastest of getaway cars and looked damn good doing it. This thing is about 14 levels of pure awesomeness.

I have to list a few honorable mentions, as they are just too cool to leave off, so I have to at least give them a bit of love:

What are your favorite cars from television? I know there are some that I missed, but the important ones are here and I’d be more than happy to take anyone of these home. Now if I only had someone to buy them for me…

Josh "ecksmanfan" Johnson, Top 8 Vehicles of Television

Marvel touts the series as giving readers a “rare glimpse into the ultimate nihilist’s early days on his far-off home planet Titan” and the life events that lead him down his path of cosmic villainy. Aaron promised that the origin story is literally that, starting with the Mad Titan’s birth. The series will have some new characters, but there will be several familiar names including Thanos’ father Mentor and his mother Sui-San. Aaron talked about the question that runs through the series:

Well, that’s really the main question of the book. Who is Thanos? When the book starts, even Thanos doesn’t know the answer to that question. It’s the pursuit of that answer that begins to take him to some very dark places. This is not a super hero story. There are no good guys swooping in to save the day here. This is the origin story of a very bad dude. A cosmic mass murderer.

This past summer I had the opportunity to speak with Jim Starlin about the first proposed Thanos origin story, and he shared his thoughts on that (you can find that here). Starlin laid down a lot of history for his creation, but Aaron will be going through pulling it all together and giving it a slight twist. Aaron is sticking to Starlin’s work and talks about how he will continue on from what has already been written:

Jim Starlin of course had already laid down a lot of the pieces of Thanos’ origin, but they were spread out in several different stories written over the course of several years. THANOS RISING combines all those pieces and also fills in a lot of the cracks. I think it’s true to Starlin’s original ideas for the character, while also expanding on some aspects of the origin, and playing around a bit with the dark romance part of the character’s history.

The series starts in April, but as of now there is no word on how long the miniseries will run. Thanos Rising will serve as an entry points for people who just found out about the Mad Titan through The Avengers, but old fans will also get something out of it. Aaron has been writing some great stuff the past few years with Scalped and his recent Thor, so it will be interesting to see what he brings to Thanos. Bianchi’s art is great so that’s an added bonus. You can read the full interview to see what Bianchi had to say about redesigning a young Thanos by clicking here. Cody "The Thorverine" Ferrell, Jason Aaron To Write Thanos Origin Series: Thanos Rising

Production Weekly, who are usually very reliable when it comes to things like this, report that the film will start shooting in New York this April. New York and April, how appropriate.

No word other than that. I would say it’s a safe bet that some of the things that caused so much fan discord has been tweaked or completely changed. With principle photography beginning so soon, it should be no time at all until we hear some solid casting info. What do you think? Cody "The Thorverine" Ferrell, Michael Bay’s Ninja Turtles Movie Starts Shooting Soon

Ralph is a very simple movie at heart, but has plenty of deeper messages.  Kids will see what they want, and so will adults.  Kids will see a man who thinks he is bad be a good person.  Adults will see a complex film about heroes and their somewhat ambiguous morality.  It’s amazing how easily the movie balances these two extremes.  Never does the audience feel like these plot twists are forced or shoved in for the sake of it.  Everything feels natural for the story.  The plot does a great job of giving the audience to care for each and every character.  Even a character like King Candy, who turns out to be a villain for the movie.  The rules of the world are also stated nicely.  The audience doesn’t have to sit through some long exposition scene about how and why they game jump.  The rules are brought up naturally, or in a funny way.

Yes, there are video game references a plenty.  They go from obscure arcade games like Tappers, to main stream characters like Sonic.  The majority of Ralph takes place in a Mario Kart knock off, with plenty of jokes at that series.  It should take a couple viewings to get all of the hints and nods to games.  While many movies have tried to have their setting be a video game, none have succeeded.  But Ralph soars in this setting.  It’s clear the creators have a love for video games, and know what they are about.  There are plenty of jokes at modern and classic video games, but there is a respect behind those jokes.

The special effects are on the same level of Pixar.  8-bit characters move in quick motions, as they would when playing the game.  If something in an 8-bit game splashes, the puddles are squares.  It’s a small thing, but goes a long way to help sell the world that these characters are in.  Another big thing is having every character react as they would in their game.  On a small scale, this is to be expected.  But when there is a huge scene, filled with hundreds of characters, every character acts accordingly.  Sonic is in the background of one of these scenes, and we see him get hit with debris.  Naturally, he starts blinking and shoots out coins.  He was so far in the background, I almost missed it.

Wreck-It Ralph isn’t perfect though.  While the writing is great in most scenes, occasionally the writing gets a little on the nose with their message.  The movie treads the line well of adult and kid content, but the script creeps into preachy territory every so often.  It’s jarring, considering there are a few scenes that are quite dark emotionally, and filled with subtlety.  Then we go to a scene that lays everything out on the table.  It doesn’t ruin the movie by any means, but it could have been changed.

The voice actors create a great team.  No one steals the show, but they all work together to create a better movie.  John C. Riley makes Ralph lovable, and instantly the audience feels for the guy.  Sarah Silverman makes Vanellope annoying as hell, then the audience’s heart just breaks for her.  Her voice is one of the few who can’t be picked out right away.  Jane Lynch plays the tough as nails commander well, in a tongue-in-cheek fashion.  Jack McBryer was hysterical as Fix It Felix.  But the biggest surprise was that Alan Tudyk played King Candy.  He sounds nothing like Tudyk’s normal voice.  And as I have always said, “Putting Alan Tudyk in your movie ALWAYS makes it better.”

If Wreck-It Ralph proves one thing, it’s that kids don’t need a movie that coddles them.  Ralph deals with some heavy emotions that are accentuated by some perfectly voiced scenes.  It seemed almost un-Disney to have these characters so sad.  But it works.  Kids loved the movie, and many were screaming that they wanted to see it again.

Wreck-It Ralph gets 4/5.

Joe Kubert 1926 - 2012 RIP

Hello Readers…this feature, we honor the life and passing of the comic book industry’s biggest pioneers and legends, Joe Kubert. What we can say to begin with, this gentleman, comic art scholar, teacher, and creator molded the backdrop for several of comic book legend’s most remembered characters and was a driving force of many an aspiring artist and comic character creator from the mid-20th century until present. We, at Comic Book Therapy pay a salute to the man, legend, and influence, along with a heartfelt testimony by Kubert School Graduate/ Evil Robo Productions CEO, Eric Schock.

Joe Kubert, an American comic art legend, born September 18, 1926 in Southeast Poland, and emigrated with his parents to Brooklyn, New York. It has been reputed in his Graphic Novel Yossel, that Kubert began his career at the surprisingly young age of 12 years old. His first work was in cartooning for comic books… From there on, his love of the art grew as he attended Manhattan’s High School of Music and Art. His burgeoning career gradually took flight as he worked for such legendary studios as Fox Comics, working on Blue Beetle (in its Pre-DC days), as well as others like Quality Comics (working coloring on Will Eisner’s The Spirit), Harvey Comics, and others.

His mainstay though would eventually be on companies All-American and DC Comics. Kubert went to serve many hats for artwork production and management from there on. But two of his most famous testimonial creations were of his originals Hawkman and Sargeant Rock, published through DC Comics exclusively.

Fast forward onto present day, Kubert maintained as a prime influential figure in the comic book industry and even started with his own art school, the Kubert School (formerly known as The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art or Joe Kubert School) a technical institute in Dover, New Jersey, where students of comic art and graphic design, pace a three-year venue learning the concepts of art and design in the comics industry as well as commercial/graphic art the same. His amazing work over the course of these decades gave him the honored inductions into the Harvey Awards’ Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998.

Joe Kubert sadly passed away as of August 12, 2012 due to complications of multiple myeloma, a month short of his 86th birthday. His legacy continues through the eyes of his two sons, Adam and Andy Kubert(whom both have become successful comic book artists in their own right) and his many proteges, students, and graduates of his school. Rest In Peace Joe, you did great! We will all miss your amazing talent and influence on comics.

Speaking of such, I was one of the many that had the opportunity to have the grace of learning from this master, he was a legend. For me he was Sgt. Rock when he spoke to us in class, we where the new battalion he was training for a war, he made us ready to take on any challege, any situation that could arise. I was honored to attend the Joe Kubert School, and I honor his legacy with doing what he taught me…draw comics.

Thank you, Joe. You will live forever in the hearts, and minds of your students.”

It’s that time of the year again where your local comic book store will be giving out free comic books all day, or until supplies last! For the last few years I have been heading to one of my favorite comic book stores 4 Color Fantasies in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. Every year they have amazing local and non-local artists, local comic book creators, big industry names, as well as so much more! For example last year they had Gail Simone and the year before that they had the then head of Boom! Studios legendary writer Mark Waid!

Image Comics announces that “Li’l Depressed Boy” will take a trip to Camp Gambino in issue #10 of the series, featuring a special guest appearance by rapper Childish Gambino, who kicks off his much anticipated “Camp” tour with a string of sold-out shows including opening night on April 5th in Austin, TX. A limited number of copies featuring an exclusive cover designed by THE LI’L DEPRESSED BOY artist Sina Grace will be available for purchase only on the Camp Tour starting in Iowa City on April 16th.

In the issue, a concert rekindles a memory of loneliness and a person who made a difference in Li’l Depressed Boy’s life — rapper Childish Gambino, who urges him to climb out of his cocoon and experience the world. The experience will lead Li’l Depressed Boy on a new path in his life, sending the comic series in a new direction. The appearance in the comic marks the first time a guest will participate in the actual narrative and not just as a setting.

“It’s eerily alarming how much the themes in Childish Gambino’s ‘Camp’ are going to play out not only in this issue, but the story arc to come,”

said artist Sina Grace.

“When I came across his music, it quickly ascended to the top of every playlist,”

said writer S. Steven Struble.

“I feel a kinship with what he says in his songs. He’s creating something earnest and true to his life, and I’m trying to do the same with mine.”

As Grace simply puts it:

“He loves the comics, we love the music, we wanted to make art together. His appearance is bringing the best out of both Struble and myself.”

Hello again readers!!

DocBBanner with the scoop on one of today’s best known voice actors and narrators in anime!! Kyle Hebert! Wrapping up at one of Arizona’s Premiere anime conventions, Con-nichiwa 2012, CBT decided to catch the renowned voice of Gohan and narrator of Dragonball Z and the voice of Kamina on Gurren Lagann on the off-time for an exclusive. Kyle talks on his career, career philosophy, and some of his awesome roles.

DBB: How did you start out? When did you first get inspired to enter the arts in general and on into radio DJ-ing, announcing, and voice acting?

KH: The spark for me for getting behind the mic in general began in childhood, probably around age 8 or so. My dad told me that one guy, Mel Blanc, voiced all my favorite Looney Tunes. Plus I used to play radio with my turntable and cassette recorder, as a DJ, or making mock commercials, etc. The theater of the mind was always captivating to me, probably because I was always too shy to get up on stage and memorize lines in plays. I grew up in the 70s as a huge fan of radio and animation, and now that I’m 42, I’m happy to report I never quite “grew up”. ;D
DBB: What was your toughest challenge when you first started out voice acting?

KH: The biggest challenge no matter where one is in their career is consistency of work. When you first start out, you don’t make enough money to really matter. And even if you are established you can go through weeks or even months of slow-to-no activity. Luckily when I began my voice acting with DBZ, I was still employed full time in radio. But it became particularly scary when I left radio to pursue voice acting full time and move to Los Angeles. It’s been driven into my brain that not getting hired is never a personal matter. You either are or aren’t what the director is looking for, and it’s very competitive. Fortunately, there are hundreds more projects available to audition for in LA rather than Texas, particularly in character driven stuff such as video games and cartoons (my favorite). But there have been extremely stressful times where the phone doesn’t ring and you gotta stretch the budget out just to get by.

DBB: Your first role was being Gohan and the narrator for DBZ, how did it go at first?

KH: I was a little nervous, but I was literally achieving a childhood dream and I felt like I was perfectly capable of doing the gig. I was actually a fan from years before. I would actually imitate Doc Harris’ narrator voice from the Ocean dub, back when DBZ would air once a week on TV once a week at 6am. It was probably the reason I able to figure out how to program a VCR at the time. Chris Sabat, who directed me on most of the show, told me that the general consensus was that I wouldn’t work out, based on their first impression of me at the audition. I wore a bootleg, off centered DBZ iron on shirt. They immediately wrote me off as a fanboy. Funimation and any company casting actors want actors, not fans, everyone, so take note. But they love what I brought to the audition, thankfully. I was pretty rusty at doing lip sync at first, but I think that’s always the case with folks starting out.
DBB: What do you consider your best method of prepping or psyching yourself up for a particular voice role?

KH: Ya know, I’m actually not method. I’m so used to being shown the uber-basics of a character: a picture, a brief bio, and the director filling me with a paragraph or so summary. We build our performances based on bullet points. Efficiency, being a good listener, consistency, improvisation, are all key elements in the booth. The director will work with the actor in an audition or session to fine tune a voice. I am just always super passionate about getting to do what I love for a living that my only feeling before a session is genuine excitement.

DBB: Are there any new Voice roles for you in the works? In regards to your other projects, do you have any others, anime, and non-anime related animation projects as well?

KH: A couple years ago I recorded for The Avengers cartoon on Disney XD. I have two episodes that will air this season, but I can’t say as who yet. Since moving to LA six years ago, I’ve been mostly recording on video games (which pay WAY more than anime). You’ll continue to hear me on Naruto, Bleach, and on the upcoming Guild Wars 2. I also got a brief stint on Hellsing Ultimate OVA as well.

DBB: Any particular words of wisdom for all the budding artists out there who wish to follow the same career goals like yours?

KH: Get experience and training when and wherever you can. Even in a podunk town in the middle of nowhere there are drama classes or plays going on. On camera, on stage, on the air, never turn your nose up at an opportunity to hone your craft. Read aloud 10 minutes a day, record your voice, get used to how you sound. Get involved in projects online. Depending on your goals, you’ll need to move where the work is. Radio/TV commercials are lucrative in most major cities, but animation and game work is most prevalent in Los Angeles. Nothing in this business happens quickly or cheaply. Be patient, take baby steps, and know that there are no guarantees. It’s all risk. And if it doesn’t pay off, at least you tried. Better than wondering “What if…?”.

DBB: Lastly: The Comic Book Therapy signature comment question.. What is your favorite all-time anime/manga/comic book/Sci-Fi character or hero/heroine?

KH: Aw man, hard to nail it down to just ONE
Anime = Spike Spiegel
Comic book = Sandman
Sci-Fi character = probably Captain Malcom Reynolds (Firefly/Serenity)
Hero = my parents. they have been nothing but supportive of my path to accomplishing my dreams.
