Steven Moffat On Christopher Eccleston Not Returning For The DOCTOR WHO Anniversary
Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has finally opened up about Christopher Eccleston declining an invitation to return to the show for the 50th anniversary special, The Day of The Doctor. Before filming began we heard that Eccleston didn’t want to take part in the celebrations. Rumors began swirling about the actor’s supposed bitterness with the role of the 9th Doctor and even that he didn’t like the script he was given for the special. At one point it was said that Eccleston backed out at the very last second, necessitating the use of the mysterious John Hurt Doctor. Well according to Moffat none of that is true.
In an interview with SFX, which we saw some 50th pics from the other day (right here), Moffat gave a little insight into his conversations with Eccleston:
I had an initial contact with Chris [Eccleston] and, in a very amiable and gentlemanly way, he didn’t feel that he could come back to it. There wasn’t any big fuss about it – I had a couple of meetings with him, and he was perfectly pleasant, and indeed quite enthused about the show, but he just doesn’t do that, it’s just not him.
Moffat adding the bit about Eccleston being “enthused about the show” goes above and beyond a fluff statement and seems to indicate that the actor really isn’t as unhappy with the show and his role as many fans think. The fact he won’t appear in the 50th won’t end that line of thinking for some fans, but it does speak wonders coming from Moffat. As far as the “just not him” comment, I can only guess that means reprising a role. Eccleston said before he doesn’t tread the same waters twice. His absence was noticeable during G.I. Joe: Retaliton with a silly throwaway line explaining while Destro had to stay imprisoned. We can only guess Malekith will be a one and done villain in Thor: The Dark World as well. While Eccleston won’t be appearing, we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the other Doctors. Moffat said there’s a lot we don’t know about the special since they filmed indoors. What do you think about Eccleston‘s comments? Do you hope Moffat extended the same offer to the classic series Doctors?
