STAR WARS VII Casting Isn’t Complete, But Filming Has Already Begun

star warsA few days ago rumors started circulating that filming on Disney and director J.J. Abrams‘ new entry in the Star Wars franchise would begin filming soon in Cairo, Egypt and possibly Morocco. Some thought the rumors were a little odd considering absolutely nothing official has been announced about the film, but it turns out those rumors are true. Disney chairman Alan Horne confirmed those particular rumors and offered up some tiny pieces of information about Episode VII in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter as part of the Hollywood Masters series at the LMU Film School.

When asked about the Episode VII and what the toughest part is right now, Horne said “Casting. We have a couple things, I can’t disclose what we got…We have a lot of them, we’re just not completely done yet. We haven’t announced.” When asked if filming will truly begin in six weeks, Horne confirmed the rumor that some filming is actually going on right now. He told those in attendance, “We’re actually shooting some of it now. We’re up against it.” We can probably assume that the filming now is some location shots, establishing shots, and plate shots or the like. With no casting officially announced, it’s highly unlikely it’s anything major.

One interesting thing Horne hinted at that seemed to be a problem early one was the script. We’ve all heard the stories about the behind the scenes drama that went on before Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over writing duties from Michael Arndt. Admitting there were some problems, Horne said “Also, it’s all about the screenplay. This is episode 7, so there’s 4, 5, 6 and this is 7. It takes off where 6 left off. Where 6 left off is 35 years ago, by the the time this is released in December of 2015 in a theater near you. It has to be screenplay, screenplay, screenplay.” When asked if the screenplay was where it needed to be, Horne only said “It actually is now.” So filming is officially underway and the cast is almost in place. We have no idea what’s going on with the film, so when we may actually hear something official is anyone’s guess. What do you think about Horne‘s comments?
