While production of Star Wars: Episode VII is well underway, and still highly secretive, it was announced today that two new female cast members have been added. StarWars.Com unveiled the news that 12 Years A Slave Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones badass Brienne of Tarth, Gwendoline Christie, will be joining the J.J. Abrams directed film.

The news seems to shoot down the rumors that there was only one major female role in the film, with Nyong’o and Christie both rumored to have fairly sizable roles. Nyong‘o, hot off an Oscar win, has been rumored as part of the film for several months now. When the cast was announced a few weeks ago, many thought Nyong’o‘s talks fell through. It seems that wasn’t the case and finalizing the deal may have just taken a little while longer. Christie has quickly become a fan-favorite character in Game of Thrones and recently landed a role in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2. While there isn’t any inkling about what role either actress is playing, you can read the full press release about the news below:

Lupita Nyong’o joins the recently announced cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. This year, her breakthrough performance in 12 Years a Slave earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Gwendoline Christie, currently starring in the hit television series Game of Thrones as Brienne of Tarth, has also been cast in the production. She can next be seen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.
“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”
Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the Saga Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.
Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

Also of note today, TMZ landed some very interesting set photos that show off some creatures and costumes on a set that seems to be serving as a Tatooine marketplace. The pics appear to confirm that the movie will indeed be using slightly less CGI in favor of more practical effects. The giant pig-like alien was reported to be manned by 5 people inside the belly for two scenes in the marketplace. The studio seems to be yanking all the photos down from the web, though TMZ still has them up, so click the pig-thing below to see them all.star wars
