Spider-Man Swings Both Ways: Garfield Pitched The Idea Of Mary Jane Being A Dude
It wasn’t even an hour ago that EW dropped the electrifying Electro cover for their latest issue, but now they’ve dropped another big Spider-Man bomb. Andrew Garfield spoke with the magazine for the Spidey section of their Comic-Con extravaganza. What he said may well shock a few people.
Andrew Garfield is a huge Spider-Man fan. He’s been a big fan since childhood and he even gave an impassioned speech about the character at Comic-Con a few years ago when he was there in costume so nobody would know who he was. One of the things he’s always said is how Spider-Man is open to all kinds of ideas. He tried to pitch a pretty bold idea to producer Matt Tolmach when it the subject of Mary Jane came up. EW relayed the subject of his philosophical discussion:
I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ. And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?
The star even had a man in mind for Mary…Marty(?) Jane:
I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!
It seems Garfield even spoke to Marc Webb about it. EW said the director knew too well what they were talking about when they asked him about Garfield‘s ideas. Michael B. Jordan is apparently being sought for every new comic book movie being made to date. He’s pretty well locked up the role of Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four reboot, and he was at least mentioned for the gender swapped Mary Jane. Switching a character’s race in a comic book movie has become no big deal and is usually, I said usually, accepted by fans. Do you think gender swapping is the next step? What do you think about Garfield throwing out an idea that changes Spider-Man so dramatically?
