Solicit Info For Superman Unchained: Plus A Preview Of Jim Lee’s Four-Page Double-Sided Foldout
It’s not an exaggeration to say that Scott Snyder and Jim Lee’s Superman Unchained is one of DC‘s most anticipated new books. It wasn’t a very well kept secret to begin with, but when it was officially announced fans went crazy at the idea of Lee and Snyder teaming up. Working on Superman was just the cherry on top. We’re starting to learn a little about the series now that some times has passed. Snyder and Lee spoke with Hero Complex about the book and what we can expect.
The series lands in comic shops on June 12, two days before Man of Steel hits theaters. The book is more about celebrating Superman’s 75th Anniversary year than making a tie-in comic for Zack Snyder‘s movie. 75 years of story adds up to one big task for Snyder to make something fresh and exciting. Jim Lee said he thinks Snyder has done that though:
One of the hardest things to do with a character like Batman or Superman who have had decades’ worth of stories is being able to introduce new lore into the mythology that feels organic and feels like it could have been there all along. Hats off to Scott, because I think he’s doing it on both iconic characters. In my eyes Superman has 75 years of history, but at the same time, our take on it is somewhat new and redefining, but redefining by building on all the core elements that we all know and love about the character.
If Snyder hopes readers say one thing about the story, it’s that they “open the book and see things both artistically and story-wise that are going to knock them over and say, ‘I’ve never seen Superman done this way before, ever.’” The story will focus on a mystery that challenges both Superman and Clark Kent. A brand new villain will be revealed, but Snyder says there will be some familiar rogues along the way. Also, Batman! Snyder says the challenges Superman faces “almost split the Earth and are also psychologically and emotionally perilous. It will threaten his life, and the lives of those he cares about.“
The first issue of the book will also be released in a Director’s Cut edition that features the pencils of Jim Lee and Dustin Nguyen as well as Snyder‘s full script. Finally, the book will feature a four-page double-sided pullout poster. Jim Lee tweeted a few snaps of one side of the poster in various stages.
