The Shark Has Been Jumped: Newest Member Of The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Revealed

by

About a week ago Marvel teased their big Free Comic Book Day plans. The main thrust of the issue will be the beginning of a new Guardians of the Galaxy story starring two new additions to the team. The first one was revealed as Captain Marvel while the second was left as a black silhouette to be revealed at a later date. Well, today is a later date and it turns out the silhouette didn’t need to change much to reveal the new member.

Newsarama revealed that the second member of the team isn’t Cable, as some thought it would be, but Venom. Flash Thompson’s monthly series recently ended and it seems this was the reason why. Venom is an alien symbiote, but it’s still an odd choice for the Guardians. At least Captain Marvel is space-based. Venom’s inclusion does make sense when you consider the back-up story is a Spider-Man story from Dan Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli. That should have been a little bit of a tip off. Here’s the official description for the issue:

The Guardians are about to welcome two new members – including Captain Marvel and one Mystery Marvel Superstar you’d never expect to see with the Guardians of the Galaxy! And this mysterious character is about to set off a chain reaction that takes our heroes to the farthest reaches of space – on a collision course with one of the deadliest threats in the cosmos!

So now it has gone from Iron Man to Captain Marvel and Venom. The series has been pretty good so far, but I do wish they would let the Guardians stand on their own. They don’t really need a rotating ‘guest of the week’ member to make the stories special. What do you think about Venom being the newest member of the Guardians of the Galaxy?
