SAVAGE HULK Launches This June With Stories From Alan Davis And Jim Starlin
Marvel‘s Savage Wolverine was met with overwhelmingly positive fan response, so another Savage anthology series will launch this June with the jade giant getting the spotlight. The publisher’s website revealed that Savage Hulk will be kicking off this summer with stories from superstar writers and artists like Alan Davis and Jim Starlin. Editor Mark Paniccia teased the series and the first two stories.
Paniccia talked about the book’s premise and how it will be respectful to Mark Waid and Mark Bagley‘s main Hulk series, but it won’t be strongly bound by their continuity. Said the editor of Savage Hulk:
We wanted big names, super stars and break out talent to tell their unique Hulk stories within continuity. That might be now, or using elements of the past and perhaps even glimpses of the future. It all comes back to the current Hulk mythos while letting the talent cut loose with that Hulk story that they’ve been dying to tell. In order to give our creators as much freedom as they need, the stories can take place pretty much anytime, but work within the framework of continuity.
Alan Davis will lead things off with a gigantic story that sees Hulk going up against some of his most notorious rogues. The editor teased Davis‘ story, saying “Alan’s [story] involves the X-Men, the Leader, the Abomination and the Hulkbusters. It’s great because he taps into the stuff I was just talking about with Bruce yet still manages to get in the kind of action and mayhem you want to see in a Hulk book. There are some great splashes and spreads. The story is great and the art is amazing and he reminds us that he’s one of the best X-Men artists out there all over again.“
Following Davis will be Jim Starlin, a writer and artist who has recently came back into the Marvel fold to do a few new Thanos stories. Starlin will be throwing Hulk and Bruce Banner up against the likes of Thanos, Annihilus, and Blastaar. Paniccia teased the story by mentioning “Jim’s stuff is classic Starlin, taking Bruce and Hulk into some very freaky places and it’s another case of a creator going full blast with the kind of stuff we love to see from them. Thanos, Annihilus, Blastaar and more. It’s crazy fun and action packed and super detailed. Jim’s putting his A-game into this.” You can check out some preview art below and you can pick up Savage Hulk when it smashes comic shops in June.
