Rumor: Justin Theroux Being Eyed for Doctor Strange

reg_634_JustinTheroux_jlc_060812It took some time, but Marvel’s Kevin Feige eventually got around to announcing that Doctor Strange, along with Ant Man, will be part of the scheduled “Phase 3” of their shared movie-verse. Those films are still several years out, with Doctor Strange not even having a set release date at this point,  but does that mean Marvel can’t start planning now? Certainly not and it’s possible the studio is already looking to cast an actor. Before I go on, I’d caution that you take any news at this point with the usual helping of salt and this is all rumors at this point.

The folks over at CHUD have heard from a trusted source that actor/writer Justin Theroux is in the sights of Marvel for the lead role in the Doctor Strange film. Theroux is no stranger to Marvel as he had a hand in writing the script for Iron Man 2. Here’s what the site had to say:

My trusted industry source tells me that Marvel is eyeballing someone that they already have a relationship with for the lead in a confirmed Phase Three projects:  Dr. Strange.  The name?  Actor/screenwriter Justin Theroux.  There’s no word on whether or not he is the only name being looked at for the part of Stephen Strange, but I am told that there is a strong interest over at the House of Lee.

So, it sounds as if Stan Lee is the one pushing for Theroux to land the role, one that is likely going to be highly coveted given Marvel’s track record in films. The questions is, however, whether or not Kevin Feige gets behind the idea, or even Joss Whedon, should he continue to oversee the Marvel films as he is currently doing. We know Lee does have some power in the company, but I wonder exactly how much. and if it’s enough to actually make this happen.

There have been a lot of names thrown out there by fans, anyone from Liam Neeson to Johnny Depp to Viggo Mortenson. Some actors have even thrown theire own name into the hat, such as Patrick Dempsey. I can honestly say, I don’t hate this casting choice, but it wouldn’t be my first. I’m still hoping they can work out a deal to bring on Guillermo Del Toro to helm this project! As I mentioned earlier, we’re still several years out for this film and I’d be surprised to see them working on landing an actor now, but stranger (see what I did there?) things have happened. We’ll keep you updated as more news comes along.
