Rumor: Future Plans for Hulk in Marvel’s “Phase 2″ Films Revealed?

El Mayimbe over at Latino Review has been teasing a major scoop for the last few days and after waiting anxiously through a pretty decent Super Bowl and some just as decent movie trailers, we can finally report what he had to say. The news has to do with the Hulk and his future plans in Marvel’s film universe, which is headed into its second phase, starting with Iron Man 3 in May and Thor: The Dark World later this fall. You can check out LR’s video below.
Many fans have been wondering what Marvel has in store for the jade giant and asking when Mark Ruffalo would be getting his own solo film. If this rumor pans out, it will happen after Avengers 2, where the Hulk will rage like he’s never done before. Enter Marvel’s Illuminati and the famed Planet Hulk story line. In this story, the Illuminati, which consists of the worlds most brilliant minds, send the Hulk off into space because he’s become too big of a threat to contain. He ends up on a planet where he is forced to become a gladiator and fights numerous aliens. Eventually, he becomes a king. This film is rumored to be a part of the Phase 2 films.
But that’s not all, as LR also states the Hulk will appear again in the Phase 3 films, after Avengers 3, where the Hulk returns to Earth, along with his new followers, to seek revenge for being exiled into space. You may recognize this as the World War Hulk story line.
Ruffalo, like many of the stars of Marvel’s films, has signed a multi-picture deal and the studio would be insane to pass over the opportunity to embrace the popularity the character gained after stealing the show in Avengers.
Now, this really isn’t the first time we’ve heard this concept, as Marvel’s Kevin Feige was about the future of the Hulk last year and the Planet Hulk idea was discussed then. Talking with MTV, he said:
“I don’t think there’s a lot that we couldn’t do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe,” Marvel’s Kevin Feige told me when I asked him if we’d ever see a movie based on “Planet Hulk,” the Greg Pak-written epic that sees the Jade Giant as a rebel leader on an alien planet, “Gladiator” style.
“‘Planet Hulk’ is a cool story,” he added. “‘World War Hulk’ is a cool story.”
I wouldn’t at all be surprised if this was the plan all along, and the idea may have been pushed even more to the front since Hulk was so popular in Avengers. We’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out, but in the mean time, we have several movies from Marvel to enjoy, starting with Iron Man 3 in May.
