Rumor: Emperor Palpatine To Return In Star Wars: Episode VII?
It’s been a while since we’ve had a Star Wars rumor to sing our teeth into. We expected some big news to come out of Disney’s big D23 Expo that was held last weekend, but all we got was further confirmation that JJ Abrams was directing the next installment and that the film will release in 2015. But, with just under 2 years until the release of the film, I’m not as surprised as most that the House of Mouse hasn’t released any info. I’m sure that by then end of the year, we’ll have some more substantial information. In the meantime, we have nothing but rumors to go off and we have a new one to share with you that sees a rather formidable character returning to the Star Wars saga.
The folks over at LatinoReview have learned from an unnamed source that actor Ian McDiarmid, who has played the Sith leader Emporer Palpatine, or Supreme Chancellor Palpatine in some cases, in the previous six films, will be returning for the future sequels…SEQUELS. We know that Palpatine was killed by Darth Vader at the end of The Return of the Jedi, so it seems that the character will return in “ghost” form, much like Obi Wan did after he was killed. This is an ability that many thought was only done by Jedi’s, but it appears that Sith also have the ability to do this.
But wait! There’s more! There are some SPOILERS AHEAD, so please continue reading only if you really want to know what we may be seeing in future Star Wars films. According to the source, Palpatine had taken on a new apprentice before being killed. Many thought he’d be returning as a clone, but that is not the case. Here’s the details they provided.
Palpatine had a new apprentice before he got killed.
Why would the clone be an old emperor? Go look at some of the old Dark Horse Comics. They cloned the emperor in those comics. Why would they repeat that? Why bring the emperor back to life? That would just be stupid as all hell.
Sorry to geek fans who made up their own world but it just is NOT how it is.
Once again not going by any books. Not one thing they have in the script is from a book.
As you can see, they also mention that the story is not being pulled from books or comic books. This will be an original film. It has previously been rumored that Darth Vader would also be returning, but that too would require raising him from the great beyond. As it stands now, I’d treat all of this as a rumor. Disney is not talking, and probably won’t be for some time, so it may be a while before we find out if this, or any of the other rumors that have surfaced end up being true. We still have no official confirmation that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will be returning. So, take this little bit of news with a big chunk of salt for the time being.
As always, keep checking back to ComicBookTherapy for further updates on this and the many other breaking news stories. We’ll update as more news comes along.
