Robert Downey Jr. Signs On The Dotted Line: Appearing Only For Avengers 2 And 3
This isn’t so much news as an official confirmation, but Marvel has just announced that Robert Downey Jr. has finalized his contract renegotiation and will appear in The Avengers 2 and 3. This means he won’t be making another solo Iron Man film, but he will officially be coming back to be a part of the big team. Marvel‘s statement reads in part:
Tony Stark’s famous closing line to the very first Iron Man film takes on new life today as Marvel is pleased to announce the signing of Robert Downey, Jr. to reprise the role of the “billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist.”
Under the two-picture agreement, Downey will star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3.” Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson.
So Marvel has calmed down the fanboys and girls by announcing their main movie man will return. It’s only a two picture deal, so we can start thinking about what happens after Avengers 3 and worrying about that. Downey has said Iron Man 3 felt like a definitive end for the Iron Man films so it’s not a big surprise he didn’t sign up for more of those. Will he keep chugging along doing Avengers for however long that goes on though? There wasn’t any mention of how much money they threw at the star, but reports were saying he was demanding a hefty sum. It will be interesting to see what the trades have to say when they start digging for Downey contract details. So for now we can look forward to at least two more RDJ/Tony Stark appearances. What do you think about the news? Are you happy it’s official now?
