Rick Remender Talks Uncanny Avengers
Marvel NOW! news keeps rolling along as we wait for the end of AvX and the relaunch of characters with new titles this October. Rick Rememder will tackle the Avengers title, called Uncanny Avengers with a line-up of Captain America, Wolverine, Havok, the Scarlett Witch, Rogue, and Thor. The story will be about the consciousnesses of the Red Skull during WWII being recorded by Dr. Zola and brought back nearly 80 years later. The Red Skull is out for the entire mutant race. This is the old WWII Red Skull, not the one we’ve seen grow and change over the course of his history until his death. Remender answered fan questions on CBR about the new book.
First off, Remender stated that Secret Avengers and Uncanny X-Force, the black-ops titles of the Marvel Universe, will still be around when Marvel NOW! starts. When asked if the Uncanny X-Force story Final Execution will be the finale and if that book will tie into the new book.
The events of the “Final Execution” storyline lead directly into the “Uncanny Avengers.” One character in particular, obviously Wolverine, comes out of the storyline very changed. That change leads him into the “Uncanny Avengers” with a new goal in mind. “Uncanny X-Force” is not going to be ending, either.
Remender said that Uncanny Avengers would be similar to the way he did Uncanny X-Force:
It will be similar in that all of the arcs add up to big payouts. I try and write self-contained 4 to 6 issue stories that you can read on their own but also builds to a bigger picture, a bigger mega-arc. I spent the last half a year putting together character arcs for each of the members as well, the same as I did in “Uncanny X-Force.” To ensure that the story is as much character driven as it is plot driven and we see real development in the cast.
Big news for X-Men fans, Remender said that the Uncanny Avengers team will grow as the story progresses.
Yes, the cast will grow. It will definitely be a larger task than we had in “Uncanny X-Force.” Though it will grow slowly so that I can spend as much time as needed to develop each one of the cast members and make sure they are given the attention they need and do not become just another crowd of colorful costumed folks.
Remender also commented on Wanda/Scarlet Witch. She will be a big part of the story. Her relationship with both mutants and Avengers will be explored. Her power levels for this story are back to the Kurt Busiek Avenger run levels.
Finally, Uncanny Avengers may not be what the actual team is called. Remender said the team is an Avengers unit based out of the mansion, but that their code-name is yet to be revealed.
You can read the rest of Remender’s answers by clicking here. Marvel NOW! has several books that look interesting, and this one is near the top of my list. It will be interesting to see how they do a refreshed Red Skull that is plucked straight from WWII. The team is an odd assortment, but there are some great characters to work with. What do you think? Will you be checking out Uncanny Avengers?
