Cliff Secord and the Rocketeer take to the skies once again as Mark Waid and Chris Samnee spin a yarn in the best tradition of Dave Stevens, bringing us a tale of great adventure, suspense, and humor! A ship docks in Los Angeles harbor from a far-off and exotic locale—with a big, mysterious… and living… cargo! Danger and mayhem abound as our hero leaps into the fray! Plus, the emergence of a lovely new character who will be vying against Betty for Cliff’s affections!
The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom has been collected in one collected edition this week. The miniseries was written by the amazing team of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee. We reviewed the miniseries as it reached its conclusion last October, so now we’re going to take a look at the collection and tell you if it’s worth your shelf space.
The story featured Cliff Secord AKA the Rocketeer fighting some fearsome creatures as he tries to stop an evil plot unfolding in Hollywood. Besides fighting dinosaurs on a cargo ship, Cliff also had to face his usual relationship problems with Betty and the added problem of Peevy’s niece who has the hots for him. And of course people are after his jetpack, but that takes a backseat to the giant dinosaurs causing havoc and destruction. Only one man can possibly stop them, but he’s juggling a lot of stuff right now.
The series scored a 4.5 when we reviewed it as it was happening, so we know it’s a great story. The added content to the trade needs to sweeten the pot a little. Besides a few sketches in between chapters, we have over 30 pages of Samnee artwork. The back of the book features the entirety of Chris Samnee’s layouts for the four issues of Cargo of Doom, scanned from the original art, as well as some cover designs. Comic book fans should be pleased with this addition and the behind-the-scenes look it provides.
Bottom Line: Cargo of Doom was a hit, and so is the collected version. If you missed it the first time around or just want to get your hands on all the Samnee extras, you need to pick it up. It got a 4.5 as a miniseries, but as a collection it gets the full 5/5
