Review: The Answer #1
Devin McKenzie is an insomniac librarian with a knack for solving puzzles. The Answer! is a masked crime fighter with a giant exclamation point on his face. Aside from a penchant for late nights, they share nothing in common . . . until both become embroiled in a deadly mystery surrounding a sinister motivational speaker!
The Answer! lands this week from the creative team of Dennis Hopeless and Mike Norton. The well punctuated hero is based on a story by Hopeless and Norton with Hopeless writing the first issue. Norton provides art with Mark Englert taking on colors. Crank! rounds out the cast with letters. So is it worth picking up or is this an answer to a question nobody asked?
The story starts out with an action sequence featuring our main character and our hero The Answer! After that brief scene we go back four hours and see how it all plays out. We meet Devin McKenzie our smart-as-a-whip librarian who just turned 30. She loves puzzles, but has never found one that gives her much of a challenge. Her mother, who she doesn’t have the best relationship with, sends her a giant 3d puzzle ball with a mixture of hieroglyphs, numbers, letters, and colors. It’s the one gift she has ever gotten that she actually likes. Devin goes about working on the mystery puzzle only to find the answer offers up another set of mysteries. While all of this is going on we meet up with The Answer! as he thwarts a gas station robbery in a hardcore and humorous scene. Devin is well on her way to solving all the puzzles the mysterious Apeiron throws her way. The mysterious organization is teased through a slick motivational speaker through the website Devin is directed to after solving the puzzle. All of this puts The Answer! in Devin’s way as she finds herself thrown into something dangerous.
Hopeless and Norton put together a solid story. Hopless does a great job with the script, mixing in some things we have seen before and giving them a different twist. The book is a mixture of action and humor all with an intriguing new superhero. This issue raises a lot of questions, but it pulls you in where you want to know the answers. At times Devin seems a little too cool in the situations she finds herself in, but you can write some of it off to her finding her first real challenge. The Answer! is an intriguing character who remains pretty shadowy throughout the first issue. It will be interesting to see where the duo takes him. Norton’s art is fantastic. This is another great piece of work from the Battlepug creator.
Bottom Line: The Answer! promises to be a great new story by Hopeless and Norton. The duo seems to have an interesting story to tell and it will be worth watching to see if they keep it from being predictable. I think Hopeless and Dent will surprise readers with this one. A solid story with great art makes this one to be on the lookout for 4.5/5
