REVIEW: SEVERED #5 by Snyder, Tuft & Futaki

Here we are at issue 5 of Severed. With only two issues remaining, if you aren’t reading this series by now then hopefully I can entice you to pick up the trade. Severed has been a slow burn series full of tension and subtle horror. The main character Jack Garron has run away from home on a journey to find his father.

He had partnered with a young man disguised as a woman named Sam. At the start of this  issue he is dealing with the emotions surrounding Sam’s sudden disappearance and the fact that she stole his belongings.

The readers however know the grisly truth behind Sam’s disappearance and the identity of the man responsible for  several horrific crimes: The Salesman. For five issues readers  have watched this vicious man leave a trail of bodies. The tension in this series mostly stems around the shifting decisions the Salesman makes towards Jack.

The intensity really builds in this issue after the heartbreaking events in issue 4. Jack is still oblivious to the Salesan’s true nature. The Saleseman’s motives constantly shift.  This leaves the reader in a constant state of tension wondering what will come next and if Jack will survive.

This is a stunning book. Every aspect of it from the script to the art captures the readers interest. I would love to see this team together on another project.
