Army of Darkness Vol. 3 #7
Writer: Elliot R. Serrano
Art by: Dietrich Smith
Colors by: Thiago Dal Bello
Letters by: Bill Tortolini
Cover by: Tim Seeley
The story begins with a mysterious hooded figure walking up to Ash’s cabin. Ted opens the door and the mysterious hooded figure reveals herself. Having not read the previous issues I’m unsure if she is a new character or a returning one, but Smith’s art seems to really shine with female characters. Ash reveals himself and his “Hand of Shiva,” which again is new to me, but intriguing all the same. After some nicely placed flashbacks we learn how Ted and Ash get together. Eventually, Ash answers the door to a demon who wagers a little game of chance. The demon cheats at the game revealing himself to be Legion. Ash wins the game by also cheating, and explains to the mysterious female how he received the “Hand of Shiva.” After hearing some rumblings outside, Ash gets distracted and is stabbed in the back by the mysterious female who reveals herself to be a deadite.
Having not read the previous installments of Army of Darkness since it’s transition to Dynamite Comics, I had no idea what to expect, but what I found was a adequate enough to hold my interests and to leave me wanting more. The cover art was a little cliché and the proportions are little off, but I see no major problem with Seeley’s work overall. The issue starts off pretty well explaining the setting, which was great since I haven’t read the previous six issues. Serrano’s writing really seems to capture the essence of Ash, even using current slang to modernize him, but also staying true to the character. The inside art by Dietrich Smith was sufficient enough for the story at hand and he shows great skill with sequential art. Not one time did I find the art off-putting or displeasing.
Verdict: Overall, I’d give the story a 3 out of 5, mainly because nothing really happened. I’ll keep reading though to see where things are leading, and hopefully next issue will bring on the action.
