Phoenix Comicon 2014: Better And Bigger
Its been a week since Phoenix Comicon 2014 concluded and their plans for next year’s con are already in motion. This was Phoenix Comicon’s biggest con yet! The official numbers are in and attendance was just confirmed at 77,818! Last year the attendance was 55,313 which obviously means that this con will lee getting bigger and bigger each year. I believe this makes PHXCC the third largest Comic Convention in the U.S. (San Diego being the number one and New York Comic Con being number two).
This year there was a lot of amazing panels and activities planned through the weekend. Special guests included: Stan Lee, Todd McFarlane, John Barrowman, Cary Elwes, Nathan Fillion, Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar, among many others.
Speaking of Stan Lee and Todd McFarlane, we had the chance to attend Stan’s panel, moderated by McFarlane, and it was a blast. Both of them like to joke a lot and Stan was charming and funny as always. Stan talked about his cameos in the Marvel movies and how he got started in the industry, pretty much the stuff that we already know, but we don’t mind listening to anyways.
Stan also confirmed that he will have a cameo in the Guardians Of The Galaxy movie, but he has no idea what his scene has to do with the movie. Everyone in the audience laughed so hard when he said this.
The panel was a success, everyone had fun and watching Todd and Stan interact its quite an experience. Stan was sure to let Todd know that people were there to listen to Lee not McFarlane from time to time. Todd took it like a champ, I mean when Stan Lee gives you a hard time theres nothing much you can do, right?
The artist alley was full of amazing talent, local and international. We had Sina Grace, Todd Nauck, Jim Hanna, Jon Goff, Marat Mychaels, Jeff Piña, Francis Manapul, Benjamin Glendenning, Brian Pulido, Tony Moore, Evil Robo, Dark Horse Comics, Avatar Press, Boom! Studios, and many many more!
Groups like the 501st, Arizona Avengers and Justice League Arizona had a great presence in the con floor. The displays and their set ups were nothing short from extraordinary! Adults and kids had a blast stopping by their booth and taking pictures with their favorite super hero or villain.
Once again the Cosplay scene was at full throttle, as you can tell in the following pictures:
I can’t stress enough how well and organized this convention gets each year. It ties a lot of planning and effort to put a con of this magnitude and the PHXCC staff does it every year. Matt Solberg and Joe Boudrie have a great team, and we can’t wait for next year! Thank you so much to the PHXCC Staff for putting up a great show, and for letting us attend. Stay tuned for more articles as we bring you some coverage from some of the panels and some interviews.
