PHOENIX COMICON 2014 LOOK-BACK: John Rhys-Davies Panel

Whether you know him as the beloved Cairo-connection friend-in-need Sallah from the Indiana Jones movies, or as the lovable yet gruff heroic dwarf Gimli in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy, or even more uniquely in his various roles in the Wing Commander game and animated series, he has been definitely established as one of the most iconic character actors of the last near 35 years.  Yes, we are talking Mr. John Rhys-Davies!

John Rhys-Davies took to the stage Friday 12 pm noontime on June 6th of the Phoenix ComiCon. He immediately began on a unique discussion, a topic of much concern to him involving the epidemic of today’s developing youth and drug addictions and abuse, both narcotic illicit and prescription and the mental issues they inflict upon themselves. Then came the fun stuff where he entertained the audience with witty anecdotes on his profession and roles, moving onto audience Q n A discussion on his roles, mostly focusing on the roles of Gimli and Sallah the same there.

Comic Book Therapy had the opportunity to ask Mr. Rhys-Davies on he engaged himself and to what degree with some of the more physical aspects to these two biggest known roles himself. Reply? An amusing one that resulted in a couple of hilarious anecdotes with difficulties on the set in not wanting to engage in the more dangerous stunts of some of his past roles(rightfully so, considering the damage and injury the stunt doubles took for them).

Continuing with actively engaging the audience with his work on the roles and adding some dramatic wit and flair the same. (L-C-R).

Mr. Davies continued to reflect more insights into his work that settled mainly on these two most famous roles as the Q n A urged forward and even reflected on how his children are a great inspiration to his life the same.  Catch the video segment below for a look at this event.
