Paul Giamatti On Being A Big, Dumb Brute For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

by

rhino giamattiPaul Giamatti has been out and about promoting his new movies Parkland and All is Bright, but he’s also started talking about The Amazing Spider-Man 2 again. We saw tons of pictures of Giamatti filming as Aleksei Sytsevich and then later in his giant Rhino rig. We heard a little from him about the role then, but then things went quiet. He’s recently been teasing that he will probably pop up in the third film (maybe with the Sinister Six) but he’s not sure about movie #4 though he did sign a multi-picture deal. Now the actor has touched on his love of villains and how he approached the role.

rhinoSpeaking with Collider, Giamatti touched on his love of comic book villains and how being able to play one has always been his dream. His desire to play a villain even predated his desire to be an actor. The actor expressed his love of Rhino many time on talk shows over the years, which probably helped him land the role, but it’s a dream come true:

It was totally awesome! That’s so crazy to me! It’s crazy to me that those are the big-budget movies now. There was a time when those would have been the low-budget piece-of-crap movies. But now, it’s amazing! I totally wanted to play a villain in a comic book movie. I’ve been waiting my whole life to be a villain in a comic book movie. When I was a kid, I didn’t even know I wanted to be an actor, but I knew that I wanted to be like The Wolfman, or some bad guy in something. That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to be those guys. For Halloween, that’s what I would do. I wanted to be The Mummy. So, it’s great. I get to do that. It’s awesome!

Giamatti has been seen hamming it up in set photos, like the one used as a banner at the top. The actor said he had carte blanche to go “over-the-top” with his dual roles in the film:

I went completely over-the-top with it. We’ll see. I seemed to have carte blanche to just go and ham it. He’s an animal. I took it literally. In some ways, he’s literally a rhinoceros inside. He’s just a big, dumb animal. I’m not a big, huge guy, but I thought that I could be a big, stupid animal. That’s what he is, so that’s why I thought it would be fun. He’s just a brute. He’s a beast. I’d rather be the villain. To me, they’re always more colorful and bizarre. I’m wearing a weird thing in it, too. It’s really fun!

Giamatti‘s constant remarks that he “hammed it up” for the role has some concerned he may have went a little too far. Giamatti is a fantastic actor, so I don’t think he would cross the line into Arnold as Mr. Freeze territory. We’ll have to wait and see though. What do you think about Giamatti‘s comments?
