No Surprise: Avengers Is A Box Office Juggernaut

Surprising absolutely no one, The Avengers has Hulk smashed the weekend box office. The movie made $18.7 million at the midnight premiere and an estimated $80.5 million on the opening day alone. As of the writing of the article the Saturday returns aren’t in. The feat is only second to the $91 million the last Harry Potter flick brought in. It is the highest amount of money brought in for a superhero movie at midnight.

As for the weekend as a whole, The Avengers are set to give the boy wizard a run for his money for the all-time weekend box office race. Avengers has a tough road, but with overwhelmingly positive fan and critics reactions, the word of mouth traffic could easily push Avengers into the All-Time Weekend Box Office slot. Potter has the record with $169.1 million. If you haven’t seen it go right now, and if you have go see it again. The Avengers, which has been out overseas for a while, pulled in $304 million internationally. The Avengers will easily pass $500 million worldwide by the close of Sunday.

The Avengers had a slightly harder battle, because Harry Potter was the last film in the acclaimed series. It had a built in audience, but so does The Avengers. 3D ticket prices do give Avengers a slight boost, but that doesn’t take anything away from its success.

The handy little box office report is from Box Office Mojo, you can see the top ten movies for Friday. If Avengers indeed finishes off Potter this weekend we will be letting you know.  So of course a sequel is a no brainer. Marvel I demand you back up a truck of money to Whedon’s house and let him do whatever he wants. Do your part to make that possible and Assemble at the theater near you.
