New STAR WARS REBELS Video Introduces Us To Steve Blum’s ZEB
We saw him in toy form this weekend thanks to the Toy Fair, but now we get our first real introduction to Star Wars Rebels‘ mysterious alien butt-kicker, Zeb. You may recognize the character’s design. It’s based on Ralph McQuarrie‘s original design for Chewbacca, which you can see in action with Dark Horse‘s The Star Wars miniseries. While Zeb‘s design may or may not ring a bell, you’ll definitely recognize the man lending him his voice. Steve Blum, from basically every cartoon you’ve ever seen, will bring Zeb to life. IGN had the introduction video that gives us an idea of what we can expect.
Blum, probably best known for voicing Wolverine and playing Darkseid in Justice League: War, will play a character from an all new alien species that the Rebels cast and crew want to keep a secret for now. Zeb has a military background and will utilize some martial arts-like moves to dispatch waves of Stormtroopers. In fact, fighting Stormtroopers if his favorite pastime. Blum said of landing the role:
I think I actually screamed when I was booked to play Zeb. It is literally a role of a lifetime. I’ve been lucky enough to play some major superhero roles in my career, but to be given the chance to play a new character in a Star Wars series? Brain explosion. As if working on a Star Wars series – in any capacity – wasn’t enough to cause a grown man to squee, Zeb challenges every acting skill in my arsenal and beyond. His character design is amazing. I get to vocally take on ape-like physical power and abilities, a wicked sense of humor, intelligence and integrity, and so much more that I can’t yet reveal. The attention to detail from the entire production team is inspiring. Every bit of minutia is carefully crafted to satisfy the most discerning fan of the franchise. I’m humbled and honored to be a part of the Rebels crew. I promise I will dig as deep as I’m allowed to give you guys the performance I would hope for as a fan. Get ready, guys. You’re in for one helluva ride.
So Steve Blum joins Freddie Prinze Jr. and Taylor Gray as confirmed members of the voice cast. Zeb seems to be one of those characters that’s perfectly in Blum‘s wheelhouse, so it will be interesting to see how he shapes the character in the first few episodes. What do you think about our first look at Zeb? Star Wars Rebels will air on Disney and Disney XD later this year.
