A Millennium Falcon Load Of STAR WARS Rumors Hit; Boba Fett To Get An Origin Overhaul?
There’s been no official Star Wars Episode VII news other than the fact R2-D2 will be in the film, and rumors have been few and far between lately. Security on the first film of Disney and J.J. Abrams new trilogy is tighter than [insert your own hilarious or off color simile here]. Well tonight four juicy rumors have been dropped in one fell swoop. There are updates to some previous Star Wars rumors, but there’s some news about the all-but-confirmed Boba Fett spinoff that should excited a lot of fans.
Kellvin Chavez of Latino-Review, who has been on top of a lot of Star Wars news, has rounded everything he’s heard about the film into one place. He says he’s dropping this now because security is going to be getting even tighter and the scoop wells will run dry. He starts things off by revealing a little more about a recent report regarding Michael Arndt‘s departure from the film. J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan have taken over writing duties because Arndt was focusing on the offspring of the legacy characters (mainly Solo‘s kids) while Abrams wanted everything focused on the Skywalker line. Abrams has beefed up Mark Hamill‘s role in Episode VII and may even need the actor for six months of filming. Jesse Plemons is also apparently playing Ben Skywalker. Plemons involvement is supposed to be confirmed before long but the studio won’t reveal who he is playing in the press releases.
The most interesting bit is about the rumored Boba Fett spinoff. The site reports that the movie is the one planned for a 2018 release and that Joe Johnston is on the top of the list to direct the film. Johnston worked as a concept artist and effects technician on the first Star Wars, and a Boba Fett movie has always been a dream project for the director. As far as plot goes, this is where things get interesting. Says the site:
To counter-act the prequels, the Boba Fett spin-off movie planned for 2018 has an interesting twist pitched by Episode VII writer Lawrence Kasdan: the spin-off will start with a complete stranger killing Boba Fett and taking his armor, starting a Man-With-No-Name bounty hunter tale. So: someone kills the Boba Fett from the prequels and takes his armor and name. One this is for certain is that Kasdan didn’t like the prequel and wants no Bobba Fett Clone in the spin-off film.
A lot of fans weren’t happy wit the way the Fett was treated in the prequels, being a little boy with a lot of daddy issues that got even worse when clones started running around. If the above is indeed the route they take, that would restore some mystery and danger to the character. It has a very western vibe too. That Johnston is the at the top of the director’s list is a plus as well. Johnston is a fantastic director and the fact this is his dream project could mean some amazing things for the first Star Wars spinoff. As with all rumors, take it with a grain of salt and we’ll see how it plays out. What do you think about the Mandalorian merc getting a new origin?
